  • Representation Type Preferences in Operational Business Process Redesign: A Quasi-Experimental Field Investigation

    This paper reports on a quasi-experimental field study in which business process redesign groups in four different US organizations used two different business process representation types. One of the representation types emphasized an activity Flow or workFlow view of business processes, which appears to currently be the most prevalent in actual operational-level business process redesign projects; the other emphasized a Communication Flow view. The study suggests that, contrary to assumptions likely underlying most of the current business process redesign practice, Communication Flow-oriented representations of business processes are perceived by those involved in their redesign as significantly more useful in the following aspects than activity Flow-oriented representations: identification of opportunities for process improvement, application of process redesign guidelines, visualization of process changes, and development of generic information technology solutions to implement new business processes. Important implications for managers and researchers stemming from these results are discussed.

  • Communication Flow orientation in business process modeling and its effect on redesign success: Results from a field study

    Abstract:

    Business process redesign has been intensely studied, particularly since the mid 1990s. One aspect that received little attention, however, is the relationship between business process modeling choices and redesign success. This research gap is addressed through a multi-methods study of 18 business process redesign projects conducted in 18 different organizations. A structural equation model is developed and tested based on data collected from those projects; the results are then triangulated with qualitative data. The structural equation model depicts relationships between the following broad perceptual constructs: Communication Flow orientation of a business process model, quality of a business process model, and business process redesign success. The Communication Flow orientation of a business process model is defined as the extent to which a model explicitly shows how Communication interactions take place in a process. A model's perceived quality is defined as the degree to which the model presents the following perceptual sub-constructs: ease of generation, ease of understanding, completeness, and accuracy. The results of the study suggest that the degree of Communication Flow orientation of a business process model is significantly related to the model's perceived quality. Perceived model quality, in turn, is significantly related to perceived business process redesign success. Interestingly, a business process model's perceived completeness does not seem to be influenced by a model's Communication Flow orientation. The structural equation model accounted for 56% of the explained variance in the business process redesign success construct. The main implication of this study is that a focus on Communication Flows in business processes is an important ingredient in successful business process redesign projects.

    Abstract:

    A vital component of any business process redesign (BPR) project is the depiction and understanding of an organization's processes that are being targeted for redesign. The literature on BPR suggests that the vast majority of past BPR projects have placed emphasis on the use of business process representations depicting the chronological Flow of activities of processes known as workFlow representations. This study suggests that a focus on the Communication aspects of processes is more advisable. A controlled experiment with 210 student subjects was used to test a business process Communication Flow optimization model. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. Overall, the results provide strong support for the notion that a focus on Communications Flow representations predicts BPR success. This study calls for a reorientation from the widespread BPR practice of placing emphasis on workFlow representations of processes toward an emphasis on Communication Flow representations.     Abstract : This paper reports on a quasi-experimental action research study aimed at extending and testing the Communication-Flow optimization model, which was developed as a result of a prior grant from the DoD's External Acquisition Research Program. The test is aimed at demonstrating the generality of the model, which is argued to apply to nondefense as well as defense-related organizations. In this study, business process redesign groups in four different U.S. organizations (not defense-related) used two different types of business process representation. The study suggests that, contrary to assumptions likely underlying most of the current business process redesign practice, Communication Flow-oriented representations of business processes are perceived by those involved in their redesign as significantly more accurate, more useful in the identification of opportunities for process improvement, more useful in the application of process redesign guidelines, more useful in the visualization of process changes, and more useful in the development of generic IT solutions to implement new business processes, than activity Flow-oriented representations. The results are consistent with those obtained in similar empirical studies of business process redesign projects involving DoD branches and contractors.

    In this paper, we develop a temporally evolving representation framework for context that can efficiently predict Communication Flow in social networks between a given pair of individuals. The problem is important because it facilitates determining social and market trends as well as efficient information paths among people. We describe Communication Flow by two parameters: the intent to communicate and Communication delay. To estimate these parameters, we design features to characterize Communication and social context. Communication context refers to the attributes of current Communication. Social context refers to the patterns of participation in Communication (information roles) and the degree of overlap of friends between two people (strength of ties). A subset of optimal features of the Communication and social context is chosen at a given time instant using five different feature selection strategies. The features are thereafter used in a Support Vector Regression framework to predict the intent to communicate and the delay between a pair of individuals. We have excellent results on a real world dataset from the most popular social networking site, www.myspace.com. We observe interestingly that while context can reasonably predict intent, delay seems to be more dependent on the personal contextual changes and other latent factors characterizing Communication, e.g. 'age' of information transmitted and presence of cliques among people.

    The paper develops a novel computational framework for predicting Communication Flow in social networks based on several contextual features. The problem is important because prediction of Communication Flow can impact timely sharing of specific information across a wide array of communities. We determine the intent to communicate and Communication delay between users based on several contextual features in a social network corresponding to (a) neighborhood context, (b) topic context and (c) recipient context. The intent to communicate and Communication delay are modeled as regression problems which are efficiently estimated using Support Vector Regression. We predict the intent and the delay, on an interval of time using past Communication data. We have excellent prediction results on a real-world dataset from MySpace.com with an accuracy of 13-16%. We show that the intent to communicate is more significantly influenced by contextual factors compared to the delay.

    From von Solms and Naccache's standpoint, constructing a practical and secure e-money system implies a proper regulation of its privacy level. Furthermore, when the system benefits from a widely connected Communication network, tuning precisely this control for achieving efficiency without endangering security is a hard task. In order to solve this specific problem, we propose an e-cash scheme based on the usage of provably secure primitives, where trustee quora are in charge of privacy control. Moreover, Trustees remain off-line throughout the e-coin's life to reduce the Communication Flow and improve the resulting scheme performance.
