Literature based discovery of alternative TCM medicine for adverse reactions to depression drugs

In this study, we first use the scientific literature to identify western drugs with obvious side effects. Then, we find TCM alternatives for these western drugs to ameliorate their side effects. Results We used depression as a case study. To evaluate our method, we showed the relation between herb-ingredients-target-disease for representative alternative herbs of western drugs. Further, a protein-protein interaction network of western drugs and alternative herbs was produced, and we perFormed enrichment analysis of the targets of the active ingredients of the herbs and examined the enrichment of Gene Ontology terms for Biological Process, Cellular Component, and Molecular Function and KEGG Pathway levels, to show how these targets affect different levels of gene expression. Conclusion Our proposed method is able to select herbs that are highly relevant to the target indication (depression) and are able to treat the side effects caused by the target drug. The compounds from our selected alternative herbal medicines can therefore be Complementary to the western drugs and ameliorate their side effects, which may help in the development of new drugs.

Music therapy as a Complementary Form of therapy for mental disorders.
Polski merkuriusz lekarski : organ Polskiego Towarzystwa Lekarskiego, 2019Co-Authors: Andrzej Witusik, Tadeusz PietrasAbstract:Aim Music therapy is an important complement to the non-pharmacological methods used in the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. The paper discusses the mutual similarities between psychotherapy and music therapy, indicating the importance of transference, countertransference, resistance and contract in both methods. The differences in the tools used in these two treatment methods have been highlighted. The controversy associated with the process of educating music therapists and psychotherapist in Poland has also been discussed. The paper also reviews the latest research works on the effectiveness of music therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. A meta-analysis of six papers listed in the Cochrane database concerning the application of music in the treatment of dementias has clearly demonstrated the beneficial effects of listening to music on relaxation and behavior, as well as cognitive functioning of the patients. A meta-analysis of studies on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in the treatment of schizophrenia was also published in 2017. It included 18 studies with a total of 1215 participants. The short-, medium- and long-term effects of music therapy were evaluated. There was a positive effect of music therapy on the functioning of schizophrenia patients in comparison with standard care. The analyzed data demonstrated good effects of music therapy on negative symptoms, on quality of life and on social functioning in comparison with the control group. Regular listening to music reduced auditory hallucinations in schizophrenic patients and improved the quality of their life. The positive effect of music on the brain in schizophrenia was confirmed by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Music interferes strongly with the internal speech in man and with the productive symptoms which are likely to be attention disturbances in the auditory modality. Also in 2017, the results of meta-analysis of music in the treatment of depression were published. Nine studies were included, with a total of 421 studied subjects. The addition of music therapy to the standard treatment proved to improve significantly the functioning of patients in the short-term perspective. Music therapy also reduced the slow-flowing anxiety accompanying depression. However, the long-term impact of additional music therapy was difficult to assess due to the ambiguity of the results of various studies. The combination of music therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy was studied in 155 adolescents with symptoms of social anxiety. The combination of both methods proved to be more effective than the use of cognitive behavioral therapy alone. Further, a meta-analysis of three other studies clearly indicates the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing the severity of symptoms of postnatal depression. The above observation is all the more valuable that the use of medications in nursing mothers poses a major problem in the care of pregnant women and neonates. The beneficial effect of music therapy has also been shown recently in working with individuals exposed to severe stress, who developed post-traumatic stress disorder. In conclusion, it should be stated that music therapy is a valuable and undervalued method of non-pharmacological support for patients with various psychiatric disorders.

on the role of correlation and abstraction in cross modal multimedia retrieval

This problem addresses the design of retrieval systems that support queries across content modalities, for example, using an image to search for texts. A mathematical Formulation is proposed, equating the design of cross-modal retrieval systems to that of isomorphic feature spaces for different content modalities. Two hypotheses are then investigated regarding the fundamental attributes of these spaces. The first is that low-level cross-modal correlations should be accounted for. The second is that the space should enable semantic abstraction. Three new solutions to the cross-modal retrieval problem are then derived from these hypotheses: correlation matching (CM), an unsupervised method which models cross-modal correlations, semantic matching (SM), a supervised technique that relies on semantic representation, and semantic correlation matching (SCM), which combines both. An extensive evaluation of retrieval perFormance is conducted to test the validity of the hypotheses. All approaches are shown successful for text retrieval in response to image queries and vice versa. It is concluded that both hypotheses hold, in a Complementary Form, although evidence in favor of the abstraction hypothesis is stronger than that for correlation.

Toward the gestural interface: comparative analysis between touch user interfaces versus gesture-based user interfaces on mobile devices

This paper discusses the ease of use of a classic touch screen user interface (TUI) in contrast to a gesture-based user interface (GBUI) applied to a mobile device. Two basic positions are used for comparison: “normal” when individual is standing and “special” when individual is lying down. The first represents a common position for healthy individuals, while the second is used to represent sick, disabled or comfortable individuals. Two software applications have been developed in order to set an interaction test for TUI and GBUI, which was perFormed by 25 users. The interaction tests show that GBUI has a very reasonable average accuracy of 88.5% in special position and 89.8% in normal position, while TUI presents an average accuracy of 96.5% in special position and 97.4% in normal position. Therefore, GBUI could be a Complementary Form of interaction to TUI that can be useful to any user, especially for cases of illness or simple comfort of the user. As study case, we have developed a software solution called SICLLE (emergency call control interactive system) that manages phone calls in a smartphone and applies the concept of gestural control tree to set a gestural navigation through a gestural language from a gestural vocabulary. An architecture for mobile devices supporting GBUI has been proposed and used in the implementation of SICLLE. SICLLE allows the personalization of the gestures, which optimizes the gestural dictionary and achieves an easier learning and use. In addition, SICLLE incorporates a hearing guide which replaces the typical visual control, reaching total acceptance in the experiment conducted with real users.
