The dark side of smartphone usage: Psychological traits, Compulsive Behavior and technostress

Along with its obvious benefits, however, the smartphone has other effects that are not all that glorious. This study investigates the dark side of the smartphone trend. We examine the link between psychological traits and the Compulsive Behaviors of smartphone users, and look further into the stress caused by those Compulsive Behaviors. We conducted an empirical study consisting of 325 participants and compared Structural Equation Modeling with competing models. The results suggest that Compulsive usage of smartphone and technostress are positively related to psychological traits including locus of control, social interaction anxiety, materialism and the need for touch. Gender differences are also found in the aforementioned relationships. The results have practical implications to user-oriented smartphone design and operation companies as well as government agencies as they combat the social ills brought on by smartphones.

Association of Rigid-Compulsive Behavior with Functional Constipation in Autism Spectrum Disorder

BeversdorfAbstract:Based upon checklist data from the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network, we hypothesized that functional constipation (FC) would be associated with rigid-Compulsive Behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We used the Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms—Rome III to assess FC symptoms in 108 children with ASD. As hypothesized, FC was associated with parent ratings on the Repetitive Behavior Scales—Revised (RBS-R) Compulsive, Ritualistic, and Sameness subscales in the overall population. Of note, FC was less common in children who were not taking medications that target Behavior or treat FC. In the medication-free children, rigid-Compulsive Behavior was not significantly associated with FC. More research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these associations.

Rigid-Compulsive Behaviors are associated with mixed bowel symptoms in autism spectrum disorder.

Williams, Pat Levitt, Phillip Gorrindo, Daniel Rosenberg, Jeremy Veenstra-vanderweeleAbstract:Based on clinical experience, we hypothesized that rigid–Compulsive Behaviors are associated with severe constipation and co-occurring diarrhea or underwear staining in children with autism spectrum disorder. Using data from the Autism Treatment Network, we evaluated the association between these gastrointestinal symptoms and measures of rigid Compulsive Behavior in children ages 2–17. Following statistical correction, four of five primary measures were significantly associated with constipation and diarrhea or underwear staining, including parental report of repetitive Behavior, parental report of Compulsive Behavior, clinician diagnosis of obsessive–Compulsive disorder, and report of rituals observed on the autism diagnostic observation schedule. This association could point to a causal connection between these symptoms or to a common biological pathway that impacts both gut and brain.

The role of NMDA receptors in the signal attenuation rat model of obsessive–Compulsive disorder

Objectives To test the role of NMDA receptors in Compulsive Behavior using the signal attenuation rat model of OCD. In this model, ‘Compulsive’ Behavior is induced by attenuating a signal indicating that a lever-press response was effective in producing food. Methods The NMDA antagonist, MK 801 (0.025–0.100 mg/kg) and the partial NMDA agonist, d -cycloserine (3–100 mg/kg) were administered to rats just before assessing their lever-press responding following signal attenuation (Experiments 1 and 2, respectively). Because the effects of signal attenuation are assessed under extinction conditions, drug doses that were effective in Experiments 1 and 2 were also tested in an extinction session of lever-press responding that was not preceded by signal attenuation (Experiment 3). Results Systemic administration of d -cycloserine (15 mg/kg) selectively decreased Compulsive lever pressing, whereas systemic administration of MK 801 did not affect Compulsive lever-pressing but dramatically increased resistance to extinction. Conclusions Activation of NMDA receptors may have an anti-Compulsive effect in OCD patients.

The Role of the Striatum in Compulsive Behavior in Intact and Orbitofrontal-Cortex-Lesioned Rats: Possible Involvement of the Serotonergic System

Schilman, Oded Klavir, Christine Winter, Reinhard Sohr, Daphna JoelAbstract:In the signal attenuation rat model of obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD), ‘Compulsive' Behavior is induced by attenuating a signal indicating that a lever-press response was effective in producing food. We have recently found that lesions to the rat orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) led to an increase in Compulsive lever-pressing that was prevented by systemic administration of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine, and paralleled by an increase in the density of the striatal serotonin transporter. This study further explored the interaction between the OFC, the striatum, and the serotonergic system in the production of Compulsive lever-pressing. Experiment 1 revealed that OFC lesions decrease the content of serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, and GABA in the striatum. Experiment 2 showed that intrastriatal administration of paroxetine blocked OFC lesion-induced increased compulsivity, but did not affect Compulsive responding in intact rats. Experiments 3 and 4 found that pre-training striatal lesions had no effect on Compulsive lever-pressing, whereas post-training striatal inactivation exerted an antiCompulsive effect. These results strongly implicate the striatum in the expression of Compulsive lever-pressing in both intact and OFC-lesioned rats. Furthermore, the results support the possibility that in a subpopulation of OCD patients a primary pathology of the OFC leads to a dysregulation of the striatal serotonergic system, which is manifested in Compulsive Behavior, and that antiobsessional/antiCompulsive drugs exerts their effects, in these patients, by normalizing the dysfunctional striatal serotonergic system.

The role of the subthalamic nucleus in 'Compulsive' Behavior in rats.

It has been hypothesized that the circuits' dysfunction in OCD may be characterized by a relative under-activity of the indirect compared with the direct pathway within these circuits. The present study tested whether lesions of the subthalamic nucleus (STN), a major node of the indirect pathway, would affect Compulsive Behavior, using the signal attenuation rat model of OCD. In this model, Compulsive lever-pressing is induced by the attenuation of an external signal of reward delivery; an attenuation that is hypothesized to simulate the deficient response feedback suggested to underlie obsessions and compulsions in patients with OCD. Rats sustaining lesions to the STN showed a selective increase in Compulsive lever-pressing compared with sham-operated rats. A post mortem biochemical analysis revealed a decrease in serotonin content in the prelimbic and infralimbic cortices, caudate-putamen (but not nucleus accumbens), globus pallidus and substantia nigra-ventral tegmental area, as well as a decrease in dopamine content in the caudate-putamen in STN-lesioned compared with sham rats. A comparison to recent findings that lesions to the orbitofrontal cortex, which also result in a selective increase in Compulsive lever-pressing, lead to a decrease in serotonin and dopamine content in the caudate-putamen suggests that there may be a final common pathway by which different brain pathologies may lead to a pro-Compulsive state.

Do psychoactive drugs have a therapeutic role in compulsivity? Studies on schedule-induced polydipsia

However, to date, there are few studies on the therapeutic potential efficacy of recreational drugs in Compulsive neuropsychiatric disorders. Objectives We explored the therapeutic potential of different psychoactive and psychedelic drugs in a preclinical model of Compulsive Behavior. Methods Outbred male Wistar rats were selected as either high (HD) or low (LD) drinkers according to their Behavior in schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP). Subsequently, we assessed the effects of acute administration of scopolamine (0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/kg), methamphetamine (0.25, 0.5, 1.25, and 2.5 mg/kg), ketamine (1.25, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg), cannabidiol (1 and 3 mg/kg), WIN21255–2 (0.5, 075, and 1 mg/kg), and AM404 (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg) on Compulsive drinking in SIP. Results Scopolamine reduced dose-dependent Compulsive drinking in HD compared with LD rats in SIP. Methamphetamine induced a dose-dependent inverted U-curve effect in both groups, in which lower doses increased and higher doses reduced Compulsive drinking in SIP. Ketamine, cannabidiol, WIN21255-2, and AM404 did not have any relevant effects in SIP. Conclusions These data provide new evidence that low doses of scopolamine and intermediate doses of methamphetamine might therapeutically reduce Compulsive Behaviors and suggest that there is not a direct participation of the endocannabinoid system in Compulsive Behavior on SIP. The research in the underlying neurochemical mechanisms of these psychoactive drugs might provide an additional insight on new therapeutic targets in Compulsive neuropsychiatric disorders.

Schedule-Induced Polydipsia: Searching for the Endophenotype of Compulsive Behavior

On the last decade, we have been working in our laboratory on the stratification of the Compulsive rats on SIP in order to know whether differences in the acquisition of Compulsive drinking Behavior could predict alterations in other Behavioral measures as well as in the neurochemical function typically associated with Compulsive spectrum disorders. The aim of this review is to collate the main findings relevant to the characterization and use of the high Compulsive drinking rats (HD) in SIP as a possible Compulsive endophenotype. The review of the genetic, Behavioral and neurochemical differences found in the selection allows us to conclude that HD rats could be a valid model for studying the Compulsive phenotype and modelling psychopathology common to a variety of compulsivity spectrum disorders such as obsessiveCompulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia and alcohol abuse.
