Concept Mapping as a learning tool in higher education a critical analysis of recent reviews
The Journal of Continuing Higher Education, 2014Co-Authors: Ian M KinchinAbstract:Abstract This article aims to reexamine conclusions drawn by recent analyses of the literature on Concept Mapping as an educational tool by considering the wider literature on curriculum development. This is with the aim of enhancing the application of Concept Mapping to higher education. As part of an iterative review process, issues raised by previous analyses are reconsidered with reference to educational research papers that were not considered previously. A greater consideration of the context for learning provides alternatives to some of the assumptions that underpin the discipline-specific Concept Mapping literature. The methodological shortcomings in the literature on Concept Mapping revealed by earlier reviews are reevaluated to support reflection on how the tool may be profitably used and also how such reviews may be conducted to better inform practice. This article offers enhanced guidance on the contextualisation of Concept Mapping and recommendations for its future use in higher education.

International Journal of Qualitative Methods - ARCHIVE, 2010Co-Authors: Ian M Kinchin, David Streatfield, David HayAbstract:In this paper the authors report the use of Concept Mapping as a means of summarizing interview transcripts in the study of the information-seeking behavior of employees in an organization. Concept Mapping differs from traditional methods of textual coding for interview analysis by making underlying cognitive structures transparent and giving a focus to the sets of propositions by which individuals construct meaning. Concept map structure correlates with the perceived richness of interview data. They provide quick summaries of the interview quality and may help to identify topics for further probing to elicit new information. In this study rich interviews provide complex Concept map structures, whereas less successful interviews provide simpler, spoke structures. Issues in using Concept maps with research interviews are discussed, including use as a retrospective interview probe, as a check on evidence saturation, as a form of data display or as a form of creative coding.

In particular, it describes how Concept Mapping can be used to transform abstract knowledge and understanding into concrete visual representations that are amenable to comparison and measurement. The article describes four important uses of the method: the identification of prior knowledge (and prior‐knowledge structure) among students; the presentation of new material in ways that facilitate meaningful learning; the sharing of ‘expert’ knowledge and understanding among teachers and learners; and the documentation of knowledge change to show integration of student prior knowledge and teaching. The authors discuss the implications of their approach in the broader context of university level teaching. International Journal of Science Education, 2001Co-Authors: Ian M KinchinAbstract:Concept Mapping is described repeatedly in the literature as a tool that can support and enhance students' learning in science classrooms. Despite such endorsements, the use of Concept Mapping as a basis for classroom activities in UK secondary schools does not seem to be widespread. Some of the flaws in the supporting literature are highlighted. The two main barriers to the extensive adoption of Concept Mapping as an integral component of typical classroom strategies are seen as the epistemological beliefs of classroom teachers and the underlying philosophy of the curriculum that they are asked to deliver. In conclusion, Concept Mapping is seen as a tool that may support learning within an appropriate teaching ecology. Such an ecological perspective may require, for some, a re-Conceptualization of the teacher's role in which teaching, learning and change are seen as integrated components of effective teaching.

The use of expert maps for scoring is described, and some of the pitfalls are considered. Finally, the value of Concept Mapping as an aid to reflective practice is discussed.

This introduction provides the basic definition and description of the methodology for the newcomer and describes the steps typically followed in its most standard canonical form (preparation, generation, structuring, representation, interpretation and utilization). It also introduces this special issue which reviews the history of the methodology, describes its use in a variety of contexts, shows the latest ways it can be integrated with other methodologies, considers methodological advances and developments, and sketches a vision of the future of the method's evolution.

The authors first provide an overview of Concept Mapping, which combines qualitative approaches with quantitative analytical tools to produce visual displays of the relationship between ideas. Then, they present an illustrative research application of the method to the exploration of women’s perceptions of the relationship between residential neighborhood factors and intimate partner violence experiences. They give attention to the data collection and analysis procedures and to demonstrating the intricacies of using Concept Mapping for public health research purposes. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of the unique contributions and challenges associated with Concept Mapping.

Evaluation and Program Planning, 2012Co-Authors: Scott R Rosas, Mary KaneAbstract:The use of Concept Mapping in research and evaluation has expanded dramatically over the past 20 years. Researchers in academic, organizational, and community-based settings have applied Concept Mapping successfully without the benefit of systematic analyses across studies to identify the features of a methodologically sound study. Quantitative characteristics and estimates of quality and rigor that may guide for future studies are lacking. To address this gap, we conducted a pooled analysis of 69 Concept Mapping studies to describe characteristics across study phases, generate specific indicators of validity and reliability, and examine the relationship between select study characteristics and quality indicators. Individual study characteristics and estimates were pooled and quantitatively summarized, describing the distribution, variation and parameters for each. In addition, variation in the Concept Mapping data collection in relation to characteristics and estimates was examined. Overall, results suggest Concept Mapping yields strong internal representational validity and very strong sorting and rating reliability estimates. Validity and reliability were consistently high despite variation in participation and task completion percentages across data collection modes. The implications of these findings as a practical reference to assess the quality and rigor for future Concept Mapping studies are discussed.

Concept Mapping a strategy for teaching and evaluation in nursing education

Concept maps are considered a powerful metacognitive tool that can facilitate the acquisition of knowledge through meaningful learning. Hence Concept Mapping can be used to promote and evaluate critical thinking. computer supported collaborative Concept Mapping study of synchronous peer interaction

Several groups of students collaborated in order to accomplish a data-modelling task in the context of a Databases University undergraduate course. The paper presents the collaboration support environment, i.e. a Concept-Mapping tool, used in this study. Subsequently, evaluation of the effectiveness of the environment in the educational process is discussed along various dimensions, like group synthesis, task control, content of communication, roles of the students and the effect of the tools used. Special emphasis is given in the ways the tools and the representations used complement each other and support the process. A discussion on the use of computer-supported collaborative problem solving environments is also included.
