    Abstract:

    Enhancing the higher order thinking (HOT) ability of students is a worldwide educational goal. This has also become a significant objective in the curriculum reforms in Hong Kong, which aims at better preparation of students to meet the challenges of the new era. Cultural aspects are often regarded as salient in determining approaches to Teaching. The influence of Chinese traditions on Teaching in Hong Kong has been discussed by many researchers, who found the thinking of Confucius still strongly influences the Conception of Teaching of Chinese teachers. By the in-depth interviews with 12 Chinese teachers, their Conceptions of effective HOT Teaching were examined. Nine Teaching tips were suggested by the teachers. The list of HOT Teaching tips reflects that intermingled values of Western and traditional Chinese education are embraced.   • The Relationship Between School Physics Teachers' Conceptions of Teaching and Student Learning in China

    Abstract:

    In a previous study with school physics teachers in China (Gao & Watkins, 2001), five first order Conceptions of Teaching and two higher order orientations to Teaching were identified. This paper reports an investigation of the relationships between the physics teachers' Conceptions of Teaching based on this model and changes in their students' approaches to learning and their learning outcomes. Eighteen teachers and 1451 students from 29 classes and 15 Chinese secondary schools were involved, Multivariate analysis indicated that teachers' Conceptions of Teaching were related weakly but were statistically significant to student learning approaches and learning outcomes. The Knowledge Delivery Conception of Teaching encouraged students to change to a more surface learning approach. The Attitude Promotion Conception and the Cultivating orientation encouraged positive changes in the achieving approach to learning. The Knowledge Delivery Conception and Moulding orientation related negatively to students' achievement, while teachers' Cultivating orientation related positively with students' achievement in physics knowledge and understanding.

    This paper reported a study examining the relations between school science teachers'Conceptions of Teaching and the learning approaches and learning outcomes of their students. Eighteen physics teachers and 1390 students from 15 senior secondary schools in Guangzhou were involved. A questionnaire titled School Physics Teachers' Conceptions of Teaching developed in the prior study was used to assess the teachers' Conceptions. The Learning Process Questionnaire (LPQ) was used to assess students' approaches to learning. A pen-paper test and an open-ended task were used to assess students' learning outcome. Multivariate analysis and correlation analysis were applied to analyse the data collected in this study. Results of these analysis indicated that teachers' Conceptions of Teaching had statistically significant but weak relations with changes in student learning approaches and learning outcomes. The Knowledge Delivery Conception of Teaching was related to students changing to a more Surface Learning approach whereas the Attitude Promotion Conception and Interacting orientation were related positively changes in the Achieving Approach to learning. Student achievement was related negatively to the teachers' Knowledge Delivery Conception and Moulding orientation but positively to the Cultivating orientation.

    Abstract:

    This paper reports on doctoral research investigating whether virtual learning environments (VLEs) are being used to facilitate student-centred learning in UK higher education (HE). The focus is on lecturers (HE teachers) Teaching in a face-to-face context. It is claimed that the use of Web or Internet-based technology can facilitate the creation of a student-centred learning environment and the adoption of a student-centred method of Teaching. It is argued that student-centred learning and learning environments designed with reference to constructivist theories of learning will produce in students the critical and cognitive skills that higher education aims to develop. However, there are barriers that prevent the integration of technology into Teaching and elements in the Teaching environment that affect whether a student-centred approach to Teaching is adopted. The Conception of Teaching held by the lecturer is one such element.

  • Determining the Conceptions of Teaching science held by experienced high school science teachers

    Abstract:

    The article describes the process of analysis for determining a teacher's Conception of Teaching science using an available interview task. The analytical process provides a transparent link between teachers' spoken words and the different representations of their Conceptions of Teaching science. Representations of a teacher's Conception of Teaching science include a grid for analyzing different themes in a teacher's Conception, a brief summary of the themes, and a longer written interpretive summary. Because these representations are based on the fundamental components of Teaching science, they allow the uniqueness of both specific and structural aspects of teachers' views to emerge, and they facilitate comparisons between teachers. The analysis and its outcomes are exemplified using interviews with several experienced high school science teachers.
