Contact Lens Care to Prevent Complication Abstract Contact Lens is a device placed directly on the surface of cornea to correct refractive errors. Wearing Contact Lens is comfortable during activites, allows wider visual field, and improves aestheticappearance. However, improper use of Contact Lens may result in mild Complications which couldinclude blindness. Those Complications can be prevented by understanding and applying correctprinciples of Contact Lens usage. Prior to Contact Lens prescription, medical eye examination isimportant to determine if a patient is suitable to use Contact Lenses. Ocular conditions such as dry eyes, eye infection, cataract, glaucoma, and use of medication that could decrease tears production require special attention. Other conditions that have to be notified are allergy, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, menopause, chronic respiratory tract infection and immunocompromised condition. Inaddition, poor hygiene and compliance are contraindications for Contact Lens usage. Learning howto properly handle and maintain Contact Lens is essential to prevent Complications. Contact Lens Complications among wearers in Ghana.
Contact lens & anterior eye : the journal of the British Contact Lens Association, 2019Co-Authors: Emmanuel Kobia-acquah, Kwaku Akowuah, Ellen K. Antwi-adjei, Philip Mensah Forkuo, Nana Yaa Koomson, Samuel Odoi Odotei, Emmanuel Alabi, Richard DonkorAbstract:Abstract Purpose Contact Lens (CL) practice is relatively new in Ghana; a country where the geographical location (warm climate) lends itself to harsh environmental conditions (high humidity) known to influence CL wear. Recent studies suggest an increase in CL wear (corrective and cosmetic), yet, there are no studies about CL-related Complications. This study sought to determine the Complications associated with CL wear in Ghana. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study. The medical records of Contact Lens wearers from five CL clinics in the two largest metropolises in Ghana, Accra and Kumasi, were reviewed. Included in the study were records of individuals who visited the clinics within the period of 2013–2016. Data on patients with Contact Lens-related Complications were analyzed. Results The prevalence of CL Complications was 29.06 %. The mean ± SD age of patients with CL Complications was 35 ± 15 years. Contact Lens Complications were more common in females (52.90 %). The majority of Complications were in soft Contact Lens wearers (82.35 %). Refractive error correction was the most common indication for CL wear (61.76 %) among those with Complications, followed by keratoconus (14.71 %), scarred blind eye (14.71 %), corneal ulcer (5.88 %) and anterior staphyloma (2.94 %). Contact Lens Complications reported were giant papillary conjunctivitis (41.18 %), corneal infiltrates (23.53 %), bacterial keratitis (14.71 %), corneal abrasion (11.76 %), dry eye (5.88 %) and corneal oedema (2.94 %). The causes of CL Complication were inappropriate Lens cleaning (29.41 %), poor hygiene (23.53 %), overnight Contact Lens wear (17.64 %), poor Lens fit (14.71 %) and reaction to Contact Lens solution (14.71 %). Conclusion Contact Lens Complications were more common in soft Contact Lens wearers in Ghana. Giant papillary conjunctivitis was the most common Contact Lens Complication reported. Adherence to CL wear care regimen and good personal hygiene may prevent the majority of CL Complications observed in Ghana.

Patients knowledge and experience with extended wear Contact Lenses
Atslēgas vārdi: diennakts kontaktlēcas, diennakts kontaktlēcu nēsāšanas riski, refraktīvā lāzerķirurģija, Efron Gradācijas SkalaThe Bachelor paper is written in Latvian on 42 pages. It contains 25 figures. There are 59 references to literature and 4 appendices. Aim: To investigate Contact Lens wearers knowledge and experience with extended wear Contact Lenses and to estimate and compare extended wear and daily wear patients ocular health. Methods: Author created questionnaire, which was filled by 73 daily wear and 38 extended wear patients. Findings was grouped and analysed. With Efron Grading Scales for Contact Lens Complications there were evalueted 27 daily wear and 19 extended wear patients to see whether there is any conjunctival redness, limbal redness, corneal neovascularization and signs of papillary conjunctivitis. Results: Most of extended wear patients choose to wear these Contact Lenses by their own initiative not by recommendations of eye care practitioner. One third extended wear patients do not know about risks associated with overnight Contact Lens wear. Dry eyes after waking with Contact Lenses in is the most common complaint for extended wear and daily wear patients. Wearers also reported hazy vision, foreign body sensation, eye redness and Contact Lens adhesion to eye. Statistically different opinion for extended and daily wearers was about extended wear Contact Lenses as an alternative to refractive surgery. More than half daily wearers leave Contact Lenses in eyes for at least 12 hours in day. And also more than half- sleep with Contact Lenses in eyes, do not knowing the risks. In objective author evaluated that for silicone hydrogel extended wear Contact Lenses there was significant less with hypoxia related signs than evaluated for daily wearers. Silicone hydrogel extended wear patients has more marked papillary signs than daily wear patients. Key words: Extended wear, countinuous wear, Contact Lens compliance, rafractive surgery, Efron Grading Scales for Contact Lens Complication

Effect of extended wear disposable Contact Lenses on tear LTC4 in giant papillary conjunctivitis.
Ocular immunology and inflammation, 1995Co-Authors: Murat Irkec, Mehmet OrhanAbstract:Disposable Contact Lenses have been proposed as an alternative treatment of giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), a common Contact Lens Complication associated with increased tear inflammatory mediators, especially LTC4.In this study, tear LTC4 was determined by ELISA in tears from eight patients, fitted with disposable Contact Lenses for the treatment of manifest GPC.An initial decrease in tear LTC4 in the first ten days of disposable Contact Lens wear was later followed by increased LTC4 in six of eight patients (75%) at the end of the first month of disposable Contact Lens wear. The results of this study indicate that extended wear disposable Contact Lenses might have a limited place in GPC treatment, since they do not prevent pathogenic inflammatory mediator response in the long term.
