Identification of the invasive form of Corbicula clams in Ireland

This genus is now considered to comprise a polymorphic species complex. The international invasion of Corbicula is characterised by four lineages, each fixed for one morphotype, genotype and haplotype combination: the American form (A) and European round form (R), the American form (C) and European saddle from (S), American form B, form round light colour (Rlc) and an intermediate between forms R and S known as Int. We investigated the genetic and morphometric makeup of each Irish population in order to establish which invasive lineages were present so as to identify the number of introductions to Ireland. A combination of morphometric, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene analysis and microsatellite markers were used to determine the invasive form at each Irish site. All Irish Corbicula samples conformed morphometrically to the invasive form A/R. All mtCOI sequences retrieved for 25 Irish individuals were identical to the international A/R form, while microsatellite markers again showed a common clustering with the international A/R forms of Corbicula. The combined approach of morphometries, total genomic DNA and microsatellite markers indicate only one form of Corbicula invaded Ireland; the international A/R form.

It includes both sexual and androgenetic lineages. The present study re-assessed the different morphotypes and haplotypes of West European Corbicula in order to clarify their taxonomic identification and phylogenetic relationships with American and Asian Corbicula clams. We studied several populations from West European river basins (Meuse, Seine, Rhine and Rhone) through an "integrative taxonomy" approach. We combined morphology, partial mitochondrial COI and cyt b sequences and eleven microsatellite loci. Furthermore, we looked for discrepancies between mtDNA and nrDNA/morphology, indicative of androgenesis between lineages.

New records of Corbicula clams in French rivers.

Three morphotypes were recorded during the study - "round form", "light R form" and "saddle form". During April 2009, Corbicula spp. were found in several watercourses in France, including three rivers (Canal de la Somme, Oise and Vilaine) where the taxa were not previously reported. In addition, this is the first report of form S in the River Seine and, the first record of the "light R form" in the River Gard. Molluscs of the genus Corbicula are considered to be a well established alien species in large rivers.

Study on antioxidation stability of antioxidant peptide from Corbicula fluminea
Science and Technology of Food Industry, 2015Co-Authors: Liu Jing-jinAbstract:The change of scavenging activity on hydroxyl free radical of antioxidant peptide from Corbicula fluminea was the index to study the effect of temperature,p H,food ingredients,preservatives and different metal ions on antioxidation stability of the peptide. The results showed that antioxidant peptide from Corbicula fluminea had strong heat-resistance,heated to 100℃ still maintained more than 95% active. It maintained high activity in acidity environment,but losed its activity in alkaline environment. Surcrose and Na Cl had little effects on its antioxidation stability,but glucose and potassium sorbate lowered the oxidation stability of antioxidant peptide from Corbicula fluminea(p0.05). Metal ions such as K+,Mg2+,Ca2+,Zn2+,Cu2+affected the stability,and the order was Cu2+Zn2+Ca2+K+Mg2+.

Analysis and evaluation on the nutritional components of wild Corbicula Fluminea from Hongze lake
Science and Technology of Food Industry, 2014Co-Authors: Liu Jing-jinAbstract:In order to make the use of Corbicula fluminea resource comprehensively and scientifically,the nutrients( moisture,protein,crude fat,ash,amino acids and fatty acids) of wild Corbicula fluminea in Hongze lake were determined.The results showed that the water content of Corbicula fluminea in Hongze Lake was 87.27%,ash content was 7.57%,protein content was 66.61%,crude fat was 11.67%,the total amount of DHA and EPA was16.78%,essential amino acid content was 164.9mg /g,which occupied 39.6% in total amino acid.

Androgenesis: a review through the study of the selfish shellfish Corbicula spp.
Heredity, 2012Co-Authors: L-m Pigneur, S M Hedtke, E Etoundi, K Van DoninckAbstract:Among the asexual reproductive modes, androgenesis is probably one of the most astonishing and least studied mechanisms. In this ‘paternal monopolization’, the maternal nuclear genome fails to participate in zygote development and offspring are paternal nuclear clones. Obligate androgenesis is known in only a few organisms, including multiple species of clam in the genus Corbicula . Corbicula is a good system to review the evolutionary consequences of this ‘all-male asexuality’ because the cytological mechanisms of androgenetic reproduction have been described. In Corbicula , sperm are unreduced and, after fertilization, the maternal nuclear chromosomes are extruded as two polar bodies. Hermaphroditic lineages of Corbicula have a worldwide distribution and seem to reproduce through androgenesis, whereas their sexual relatives have restricted ranges. The invasive success of these androgenetic Corbicula lineages may be linked to their asexual mode of reproduction. We review the phenomenon of androgenesis, focusing on evolutionary perspectives, using the genus Corbicula as an exemplar system.

The species is considered to be one of the most aggressive freshwater invaders causing strong economic and ecological impacts. This paper provides predictions for the spread, population density, and impacts of Corbicula fluminea in Ireland. Water chemistry datasets from the Republic of Ireland and from Northern Ireland were analysed to determine suitable waters for colonisation. Only 3 rivers and 6 lakes have pH levels considered too low (<5.6) for invasion of this species. Corbicula fluminea densities within a waterbody will depend on suitable substrate and food availability, with greater populations in canals, rivers and lakes with a higher trophic level. Boating and angling are likely to be the highest vectors of spread. Redevelopment of any canal sections will require risk assessment, to minimise spread. Corbicula is likely to cause negative economic effects by creating blockages in drinking and industrial water

HISTORY OF SPREAD AND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF Corbicula FLUMINEA (MÜLLER) IN TEXAS

SewellAbstract:Abstract A database containing 1,234 records of Corbicula fluminea in Texas was created based on published literature accounts, survey reports by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, unpublished records from university and museum collections, personal communications and author's data. This invasive, exotic bivalve was first collected in Texas in the Neches River in 1958 and was next found in El Paso in 1964. Initial presence on opposite sides of the state supports invasion occurring from the west and east. Corbicula fluminea has since colonized all major drainage basins in Texas. By 2005, it was known from 162 lotic and 174 lentic waterbodies located in 180 of 257 Texas counties. There was a positive significant correlation between the percentage of invaded waterbodies by reservoir size (Pearson r2 = 0.78) and stream order (Spearman R = 0.65). Lipid peroxidation and enzymatic activity levels in Corbicula fluminalis from two sites of Shatt Al-Arab

Karim, Mustafa Al-darrajiAbstract:A suite of biomarkers including Lipid peroxidation (LP), activities of Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT) enzymes were studied in gills and digestive glands of Corbicula fluminalis from two sites of Shatt Al-Arab (Qurna & Al-Maaqil regions). The values of LP, SOD and CAT were higher in gills as well as in digestive glands in Corbicula fluminalis from Al-Maaqil as compared with that animal from Qurna region, these indicators gave the impression that AL-Maaqil region was exposed to pollutants which lead to rising antioxidant levels in clam Corbicula fluminalis.
