Additional contributions to taxonomy, nomenclature and biogeography of the Turkish Crataegus (Rosaceae) taxa

Dönmez, Sevgin ÖzderinAbstract:Crataegus azarolus L. has a wide distribution pattern from the western Mediterranean coasts to the eastern parts of Iran with several varieties adapted to local climatic conditions. Crataegus azarolus var. senobaaensis var. nov. is described as a new variety from southeast Turkey with characteristic deep leaf sinuses, mostly 3–4 pairs of lobes and leaves ovate-oblong in outline. Two varieties of the species are accepted under the name of Crataegus azarolus and the correct names are published here. Crataegus monogyna Jacq. var. odemisii var. nov. is described from İzmir, in the western part of Turkey. This new variety is distinguished by its orange fruit colour. An outstanding disjunct distribution pattern has been discovered for the recently described species, Crataegus yaltirikii Dönmez. Updated descriptions and infraspecific identification keys for Crataegus azarolus and Crataegus monogyna are given and pictures and distribution data for the new taxa are also supplied

Nomenclatural, taxonomic and biogeographic novelties in the Turkish Crataegus L. (Rosaceae-Maleae) taxa

DönmezAbstract:Abstract Crataegus davisii Browicz is a later homonym of C. davisii Sarg., and the species has been renamed as Crataegus petrodavisii Donmez, nom. nov., following its acceptance as a valid species. Crataegus × yosgatica K.I.Christ. is reduced to a synonym of C. meyeri Pojark., and an emended description of the species is given here. Crataegus pseudoazarolus Popov, C. pseudoheterophylla Pojark. subsp. turcomanica (Pojark.) K.I.Christ. and Crataegus × lavallei Herincq ex Lavallee are new records for the Turkish flora. New descriptions of the taxa concerned are provided.

Taxonomic notes on the genus Crataegus (Rosaceae) in Turkey

A new series (Crataegus Section Crataegus Series Peshmenia), two new species (Crataegus peshmenii and Crataegus christensenii), and one variety (Crataegus rhipidophylla var. kutahyaensis) are described. Furthermore, Crataegus × browicziana has been assigned to Crataegus rhipidophylla with a new status. Illustrations of the described taxa and their distribution map are also given. The Genus Crataegus L. (Rosaceae) with Special Reference to Hybridisation and Biodiversity in Turkey

However, the number of the species is increased to 1200 species by some taxonomists. Traditionally, the genus is placed in the subfamily Maloideae and it is closely related to the genera Pyracantha M.Roem., Mespilus L. and Hesperomeles Lindl. The latest phylogenetic analysis of the genus shows that it is closest to the genus Osteomeles Lind. Crataegus is divided into 40 sections by various taxonomists. The genetic diversity centre of the section Crataegus ranges from Turkey to Iran. According to field observations in Turkey, new diversity centres are proposed. The latest studies on Turkish Crataegus species show that there are more species than hitherto known. Hybridisation is common between the Crataegus species in Turkey and the biogeographic distributions of them and their parents are given. Some features of the genus, including leaf and pyrenes morphology, pyrenes number and fruit colours, are polymorphic. Polymorphism and hybridisation are the main reason for abundance of the synonyms of the Crataegus species.

In addition, these plants were analyzed for levels of flavanol-type substance [(−)-epicatechin] and flavonoid (vitexin 2‘ ‘-O-rhamnoside, acetylvitexin 2‘ ‘-O-rhamnoside, and hyperoside) constituents that are important metabolites in hawthorn herbal preparations used to treat patients with heart disease. Drought and cold stress treatments caused increases in levels of (−)-epicatechin and hyperoside in both Crataegus species. Such treatments also enhanced the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. The results from this study thus indicate that these kinds of stress treatments can enhance the levels of important secondary metabolites and their total antioxidant capacities in leaves of Crataegus. quantification of north american and european Crataegus flavonoids by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry

Plant materials of Crataegus show promising benefits in adjunctive treatment of cardiovascular disorders, primarily attributed to flavonoids and other phenolic derivatives. 1H NMR was used in quantification of four flavonoids (naringenin, hyperoside, rutin, and vitexin-2″-O-rhamnoside) and chlorogenic acid in leaf extracts of four Crataegus species. The data were validated by comparison to HPLC-DAD. Vitexin and its derivatives were significantly more concentrated in the European (C. monogyna and C. laevigata) leaves and rutin significantly more concentrated in the North American (C. douglasii and C. okanaganensis) leaves. The concentrations of rutin and naringenin reported in this study are the highest reported for Crataegus. This work represents the first quantitative report of flavonoids in the North American hawthorns C. douglasii and C. okanaganensis and a direct comparison with the common European species.

A review of the chemistry of the genus Crataegus.

Dickinson, Nadia Talent, Paul R ShipleyAbstract:Since the 1800s, natural health products that contain hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) have been used in North America for the treatment of heart problems such as hypertension, angina, arrhythmia, and congestive heart failure. Traditionally, Native American tribes used hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) to treat gastrointestinal ailments and heart problems, and consumed the fruit as food. Hawthorn also has a long history of use in Europe and China for food, and in traditional medicine. Investigations of Crataegus spp. typically focus on the identification and quantification of flavonoids and anthocyanins, which have been shown to have pharmacological activity. The main flavonoids found in Crataegus spp. are hyperoside, vitexin, and additional glycosylated derivatives of these compounds. Reviewed herein are the botany, ethnobotany, and traditional use of hawthorn while focusing on the phytochemicals that have been reported in Crataegus species, and the variation in the described chemistry between individual species.

Molecular Analysis of Evolution and Origins of Cultivated Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) and Related Species in China.

In this study, 53 accessions from seven Crataegus taxa native to China and accessions of exotic Crataegus species (two from Europe and one from North America) were analyzed by specific locus amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-seq). In total, 933,450 single-nucleotide polymorphisms were identified after filtering and used to investigate the species' genomic evolution. Phylogenetic trees derived from nuclear simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and SLAF-seq data showed the same topology, in which Crataegus maximowiczii and Crataegus sanguineae formed a closely related cluster that was clearly separated from the cluster composed of Crataegus hupehensis, Crataegus pinnatifida, Crataegus pinnatifida var. major, Crataegus bretschneideri and Crataegus scabrifolia. Phylogenetic and structure analysis indicated that the seven Chinese Crataegus taxa had two separate speciation events. Plants that evolved the southwestern route shared the genepool with the European species, whereas plants along the northeastern route shared the genepool with the North American species. TreeMix genetic analysis revealed that C. bretschneideri may have a hybrid origin. This study provides valuable information on the origins of Chinese Crataegus and suggests an evolutionary model for the main Crataegus species that native to China.
