    The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, ingestive behavior and gastrointestinal helminths control of suckling lambs raised on pastures of Brachiaria ssp. supplemented in Creep-fed and not supplemented. Thirty-one lambs being 15 lambs in the control treatment (without supplementation) and 16 lambs in the Creep Feeding treatment (with protein-energetic supplementation) were evaluated. Performance of lambs supplemented was superior to lambs no-supplemented. Lambs without supplemented had weaning age of 81 days and an average gain of 194 grams. Lambs supplemented showed weaning age of 58 days and average daily gain of 268 grams. eggs per gram of stool (EPG) count in the control treatment was 4553, while in the Creep Feeding treatment the mean was 763. The morbidity rate caused by gastrointestinal helminths in the control treatment was 6.6% and there was no morbidity due to helminths in the treatment Creep Feeding. The morbidity rate due to hepatogenic intoxication was 46.6% in control and 12.5% in the lambs supplemented. The ingestion of protein-energy supplementation in Creep Feeding promoted an increase in productive performance of lambs, as well as increased resistance and tolerance to gastrointestinal infections and decreased cases of hepatogenic intoxication by ingestion of Brachiaria spp.

    Abstract The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of Creep Feeding and drylots or semi confined raised lambs on weight gain, gastrointestinal nematodes infection and economic viability. Lambs from six lots of 30 ewes were weighed at birth and at weaning and the offspring of three lots were supplemented in private troughs and their food intake was measured. In the second phase, after weaning, lambs were divided into two finishing groups, feedlot or semi confinement considering gender, weaning weight and Creep Feeding. All animals were dewormed at early termination, weighed every 14 days and supplemented with 2% of body weight. Feedlot animals received sorghum silage while semi confined animals were kept at pasture on Brachiaria brizantha cv Piata. Creep Feeding had effect on weight and weight gain at weaning and finishing, but favorable economic returns were only observed at termination. Pasture deferred in the semi-confinement system controlled verminosis, preventing deaths with no differences in weight and weight gain among feedlots or semi-confined lambs. Both systems were economically viable, but profit in semi confinement was 2.3 times higher than the feedlots.

    Abstract This study assessed the frequency of poisoning by Brachiaria spp. grasses in 34 suckling lambs in a Creep-Feeding treatment supplemented with a proteinaceous concentrate and 34 lambs in an unsupplemented control group. Samples of Brachiaria were collected every 28 days for determining the protodioscin content of the grass. Lambs with consistent clinical signs of poisoning by Brachiaria spp. were separated from the flock, along with their dams, and fed on hay from alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Tifton 85 (Cynodon dactylon) as alternative fibrous feeds. The concentrations of protodioscin were 0.3-0.9 and 0.4-1.4% in the Creep-Feeding and control treatments, respectively. Creep-fed and control lambs showed clinical signs at 41–48 and 34–74 days of age, respectively. Clinical signs included swelling of the face and ears, alopecia and erythema that evolved to crusting and would slough, leaving exposed areas of erosion, later becoming retracted scars in both ears. The effect of the nutritional treatment differed significantly between treatments (p   0.1). We concluded that Brachiaria spp. was toxic to the suckling lambs. Low concentrations of protodioscin were toxic to the lambs, especially if they were genetically susceptible to the poisoning. The intake of the proteinaceous concentrate in the Creep-Feeding system decreased the effects of intoxication by Brachiaria spp. in the suckling lambs.

    Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Creep-Feeding supplementation on growth performance and efficiency, feed intake and digestibility for Nellore calves grazing on tropical pastures, using a meta-analytical approach. The dataset was collected from 18 studies, which were carried out between 2007 and 2017, totalling 75 treatment means that represented 832 cow–calf pairs. All studies had a control treatment with no Creep-Feeding supplementation ( non-Creep-fed calves ) and a wide variety of Creep-Feeding treatments ( Creep-fed calves ) that were evaluated herein as a daily amount of supplement intake (SUP, g/kg BW, DM basis) and supplemental crude protein intake (SCPI, g/kg BW); dependent variables were evaluated as differential values relative to non-Creep-fed calves. Forage DM intake (g/kg BW) decreased linearly as SUP increased (0 . 43 g/kg BW per each g/kg BW of supplement DM intake), whereas milk DM intake (g/kg BW) was not affected, though total DM intake increased linearly (0 . 50 g/kg BW per each g/kg BW of supplement DM intake).     The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of beef calves’ supplementation in Creep Feeding systems on milk yield, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS) of their dams on tropical pastures using a meta-analytical approach. The database was obtained from 11 experiments conducted between 2009 and 2014 in Brazil, totaling 485 observations (cows). The database consisted of 273 Nellore and 212 crossbred (7/8 Nellore × 1/8 Holstein) cows. All experiments were carried out in the suckling phase (from 3 to 8 months of age of calves) during the transition phase between rainy and dry seasons from February to June of different years. The data were analyzed by a meta-analytical approach using mixed models and taking into account random variation among experiments. Calves’ supplementation (P ≥ 0.59) and the calves’ sex (P ≥ 0.48) did not affect milk yield of cows. The average fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield was 6.71 and 6.83 kg/day for cows that had their calves supplemented and not supplemented, respectively. Differences were observed (P < 0.0001) for milk yield due to the genetic group where crossbred cows presented greater FCM yield (7.37 kg/day) compared with Nellore cows (6.17 kg/day). There was no effect of the calves’ supplementation on BW change (P ≥ 0.11) and BCS change (P ≥ 0.23) of the cows. Therefore, it is concluded that supplementation of beef calves using Creep Feeding systems in tropical pastures does not affect milk yield, body weight, or body condition of their dams.

    Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar o desempenho produtivo e nutricional de bezerros lactentes recebendo apenas mistura mineral ou diferentes niveis de suplementos multiplos e a producao de leite e os parâmetros nutricionais de vacas de corte em pastagens de Uruchloa decumbens . Utilizaram-se 32 bezerros de corte, lactentes, com idade media de 3 meses e peso medio inicial de 109,3 + 0,84 kg, e suas respectivas maes com peso inicial medio de 447,2 + 47,1 kg. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado. O suplemento continha aproximadamente 25% de proteina bruta (PB) e os tratamentos consistiram-se do fornecimento de diferentes niveis de suplementos multiplos para os bezerros. Os niveis de fornecimento de suplementos foram 0,2; 0,4 e 0,6% do peso corporal para os tratamentos N0,2, N0,4, e N0,6, respectivamente. Os animais do tratamento controle (MM) receberam exclusivamente mistura mineral ad libitum. O ganho medio diario (g) dos bezerros foi 731,2; 810,6; 822,7e 895,2, respectivamente, para os tratamentos MM, N0,2, N0,4, e N0,6. Os bezerros suplementadas apresentaram maior ganho em peso. Houve efeito linear positivo do nivel de suplemento multiplo fornecido aos bezerros (P 0,10).

    El estudio se realizo en el Laboratorio de Producci on e Investigacion en Ovinos y Caprinos (LAPOC/UFPR) con el objetivo de evaluar los sistema s de finalizacion de corderos lactantes en praderas de raigras suplementados em Creep Feeding e Creep grazing y su influencia en las caracteristicas en vivo, de la canal y de los compo nentes del quinto cuarto. Se estudiaron tres sistemas de alimentacion en praderas de raigras, co mo sigue: (1) sin el destete de los corderos y sin suplementacion (2) sin el destete de los cord eros con acceso exclusivo a la suplementacion de concentrado al 2% del peso corpor al por dia, en Creep Feeding; (3) igual que el anterior y con acceso exclusivo a suplementa cion de trebol blanco ( Trifolium repens ) en Creep grazing . Los corderos fueron sacrificados cuando alcanzaro n el peso individual de 33 kg. Fueron obtenidas las medidas corporales in v ivo. Tambien, fueron tomados el peso y cuantificado el rendimiento de las canales; del qui nto cuarto; las medidas de la zona del lomo y el espesor de la grasa en esta region. Los sistem as de suplementacion no afectaron la morfologia de los corderos, sus canales y otros com ponentes, resultando en canales y cortes homogeneos con estandares apropiados para el mercad o de consumo nacional.     This trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of different concentrate crude protein levels (15, 20 or 25%) on production and carcass traits of Suffolk lambs in Creep Feeding. An economical analysis of the production system was also performed. Fifteen single birth lambs fed ad libitum twice a day were used in this study. The average daily intake was measured by subtracting the orts from the amount of feed offered to the animals. Lambs were weighed every fourteen days to determine body weight gain. To measure slaughter body weight (SW) animals were fasted for 16 h and then weighted. After evisceration both hot carcass weight and yield were obtained. To determine cold carcass yield and cooling losses, carcasses were placed in a refrigerator at 5oC for 24 hours and weighted again. The different concentrate crude protein levels affected the daily weight gain only when the slaughter age was used as the covariable. Conversely, crude protein levels did not significantly change carcass traits in the present trial. It can be concluded that the concentrate with 25% of crude protein is recommended to Suffolk lambs in Creep Feeding because of the higher daily weight gain and maintenance of carcass traits.

    The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effects of three concentrate protein levels (15, 20 or 25% CP) on measurements of carcass and Longissimus dorsi muscle, weights and yields of cuts, and chemical composition and tenderness of meat of Suffolk lambs in Creep Feeding. Fifteen single birth lambs were used in this study. Lambs were slaughtered when they reached a final body weight of 28 kg. After slaughter, carcasses were maintained in a refrigerator at 5°C for 24 hours followed by measurements on the left half carcass done after separation of the commercial cuts. The Longissimus dorsi area was measured to obtain the loin eye area (LEA, cm2). Both left and right loins were frozen; the left was used for determination of chemical composition while the right for a tenderness test ("Warner Bratzler Shear Force"). Different concentrate crude protein levels did not affect carcass measurements as well as measurements on the Longissimus dorsi. However, significant differences among treatments were observed for weight and yield of shoulder clod with the highest values found on the 25% crude protein concentrate. Chemical analyses of Longissimus dorsi showed significant differences across treatments for ether extract, ash, and tenderness. It can be concluded that the diet containing soybean meal must be formulated to yield 25% of crude protein because it reduced the fat content and improved the tenderness of the meat. In addition, it also increased both weight and yield of shoulder clod with no changes on carcass measurements and weight and yields of the remaining cuts.

    The experiment was carried to study three three levels (0, 50 e 100%) of high moisture corn silage replacing dry corn grain in rations of lambs fed in Creep Feeding. Twenty four Suffolk lambs were evaluated to qualitative and quantitative loin (longissimus dorsi) characteristics. Lambs were weighed until to reach pre-fixed slaughter weight, 28 kg LW. Cold carcasses were cut in seven anatomical regions. Four measures were taken on longissimus dorsi surface: maximum width; minimal depth; minimal fat depth and maximum fat depth and loin eye area. Loins were dessecated to determine muscle, fat and bone proportions, chemical composition and shear force. Results showed that replacing levels did not affect shear force and loin measures, except for loin eye area, according to quadratic regression with higher values observed in rations with high moisture corn silage. Chemical composition analysis showed that replacing levels just influenced loin fat content, that increased linearly according to silage adding. There was no effect on muscle, bone and fat proportions, considering corn replacing levels. It was concluded that is possible replace dry corn by high moisture corn silage in Creep Feeding rations to finish lambs, keeping good quality meat.

    Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, estudar niveis de substituicao (0; 50 e 100%) do milho grao seco moido pela silagem de graos umidos de milho na racao de cordeiros alimentados em Creep Feeding. Vinte e quatro cordeiros Suffolk foram avaliados quanto ao desempenho, pesos e rendimentos das carcacas. Tambem foi realizada uma analise economica. As racoes foram fornecidas ad libitum, sendo suas sobras pesadas para o calculo do consumo medio por animal. Ao atingirem 28 kg de peso vivo, os cordeiros foram submetidos a jejum por 16 horas e, entao, novamente pesados para se obter o peso vivo ao abate. Apos o abate, os animais foram eviscerados para se obterem os pesos e rendimentos de carcaca quente. As carcacas permaneceram por 24 horas em câmara de refrigeracao, sendo novamente pesadas para se obterem os rendimentos de carcaca fria e as perdas por resfriamento. Os resultados revelaram que nao houve efeito dos niveis de substituicao sobre ganho medio diario de peso vivo, idade ao abate, pesos e rendimentos das carcacas quentes e frias, indicando que a silagem de graos umidos de milho pode ser utilizada em substituicao ao milho moido na alimentacao de cordeiros. Como o peso ao abate foi pre-fixado, as variacoes nas idades ao abate fizeram com que essa variavel exercesse influencia sobre os desempenhos, pesos e rendimentos e, quanto maiores essas idades, piores os resultados dos parâmetros avaliados. O tratamento com 50% de silagem de graos umidos apresentou os melhores resultados economicos e o tratamento sem silagem de graos umidos foi o de menor rentabilidade.

The morbidity rate due to hepatogenic intoxication was 46.6% in control and 12.5% in the lambs supplemented. The ingestion of protein-energy supplementation in Creep Feeding promoted an increase in productive performance of lambs, as well as increased resistance and tolerance to gastrointestinal infections and decreased cases of hepatogenic intoxication by ingestion of Brachiaria spp.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This study assessed the frequency of poisoning by Brachiaria spp. grasses in 34 suckling lambs in a Creep-Feeding treatment supplemented with a proteinaceous concentrate and 34 lambs in an unsupplemented control group. Samples of Brachiaria were collected every 28 days for determining the protodioscin content of the grass. Lambs with consistent clinical signs of poisoning by Brachiaria spp. were separated from the flock, along with their dams, and fed on hay from alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Tifton 85 (Cynodon dactylon) as alternative fibrous feeds. The concentrations of protodioscin were 0.3-0.9 and 0.4-1.4% in the Creep-Feeding and control treatments, respectively. Creep-fed and control lambs showed clinical signs at 41–48 and 34–74 days of age, respectively. Clinical signs included swelling of the face and ears, alopecia and erythema that evolved to crusting and would slough, leaving exposed areas of erosion, later becoming retracted scars in both ears. The effect of the nutritional treatment differed significantly between treatments (p   0.1). We concluded that Brachiaria spp. was toxic to the suckling lambs. Low concentrations of protodioscin were toxic to the lambs, especially if they were genetically susceptible to the poisoning. The intake of the proteinaceous concentrate in the Creep-Feeding system decreased the effects of intoxication by Brachiaria spp. in the suckling lambs.
