    Coastal primary rainforests have suffered damage in Cote d'Ivoire as a result of a lack of protection and urban pressures. Consequently, the highly endemic and critically endangered Wimmer's shrew, Crocidura wimmeri, known only from its type locality, Adiopodoume, near Abidjan, was considered to have been extinct since 1976. Shrew species assignment is often problematic because of strong phenotypic similarities among many species. The phylogenetic position of C. wimmeri within the African Crocidura species should thus be clarified. In light of its recent rediscovery in the nearby small Banco National Park (34 km2), we investigated the genetic identity of seven specimens of C. wimmeri, based on 1020 bp of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene compared to other species sampled in the same region and published sequences from GenBank. Crocidura wimmeri formed a well-defined clade, the closest-related species being Crocidura sp., with a distance of 9.3%, a yet unknown species from Tai and Ziama forests. These results thus confirmed the validity of this species. This genetic characterization not only contributes to our knowledge of the evolution of West African shrews, but also may help in the discovery of additional populations of this critically endangered species. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111, 224–229.

    This study investigated the small mammal com- munity of the periurban Banco National Park (34 km 2 ), Abidjan, C o te d ' Ivoire, using identical numbers of Sher- man and Longworth traps. We aimed to determine the diversity and distribution of rodents and shrews in three different habitats: primary forest, secondary forest and swamp. Using 5014 trap-nights, 91 individuals were cap- tured that comprised seven rodent and four shrew species. The trapping success was significantly different for each species, i.e., the Longworth traps captured more sori- cids (31/36 shrews), whereas the Sherman traps captured more murids (37/55 mice). The most frequent species was Praomys cf. rostratus, followed by Crocidura buettikoferi , Hybomys trivirgatus and Crocidura jouvenetae . Indices of species richness (S) and diversity (H ' ) were greatest in primary forest, followed by secondary forest and swamp. Several expected species, such as Crocidura obscurior , were not found, whereas we captured four specimens of the criti- cally endangered (IUCN 2012) Wimmer ' s shrew Crocidura wimmeri , a species that has vanished from its type locality, Adiopodoum e . Therefore, Banco National Park represents an important sanctuary, not only for plants, birds and pri- mates, but also for other small forest vertebrates.

    Abstract The crocidurine shrews include the most speciose genus of mammals, Crocidura . The origin and evolution of their radiation is, however, poorly understood because of very scant fossil records and a rather conservative external morphology between species. Here, we use an alignment of 3560 base pairs of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for the evolution of Old World shrews of the subfamily Crocidurinae. These molecular data confirm the monophyly of the speciose African and Eurasian Crocidura , which also includes the fossorial, monotypic genus Diplomesodon . The phylogenetic reconstructions give further credit to a paraphyletic position of Suncus shrews, which are placed into at least two independent clades (one in Africa and sister to Sylvisorex and one in Eurasia), at the base of the Crocidura radiation. Therefore, we recommend restricting the genus Suncus to the Palaearctic and Oriental taxa, and to consider all the African Suncus as Sylvisorex . Using molecular dating and biogeographic reconstruction analyses, we suggest a Palaearctic–Oriental origin for Crocidura dating back to the Upper Miocene (6.8 million years ago) and several subsequent colonisations of the Afrotropical region by independent lineages of Crocidura .

    We karyotyped and sequenced 1,140 base pairs of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b of a specimen of Zarudny's rock shrew (Crocidura zarudnyi) from Baluchestan, southeastern Iran, to clarify its cytogenetic and molecular relationships with other Eurasian species of Crocidura. According to the karyotype (2N = 40, FN = 50), Zarudny's rock shrew belongs to the group of the lesser white-toothed shrew (C. suaveolens), which is different from other known crocidurine karyotypes, considering the combination of the diploid and fundamental number of chromosomes. Molecular results revealed that C. zarudnyi is included in a monophyletic clade with the C. suaveolens group, where it is a sister taxon to the others (mean Kimura 2-parameter distance = 9.7%).

    European island shrews are either relicts of the endemic Pleistocene fauna, e.g.,. Crocidura zimmermanni, or were introduced from continental source populations. In order to clarify the taxonomic status and the origin of the two shrew species from the Canary islands, a 981bp fragment of cytochrome b gene was investigated in all European Crocidura species and compared with the Canary shrew (Crocidura canariensis) and the Osorio shrew (Crocidura osorio). The first shares its karyotype with the Sicilian shrew Crocidura sicula (2N=36), the second with the Greater white-toothed shrew Crocidura russula (2N=42), suggesting possible sister species relationships. Results confirm the monophyly of taxa sharing the same karyotype. Genetic distances between C. sicula and C. canariensis suggest a separation since 5 Myr. The first was probably isolated from the North African ancestor after the Messinian desiccation; the second arrived on the Canary islands by natural jump dispersal. Within the 2N=42 cluster, a first split separated an Eastern line (Tunisia) from a western line (Morocco/Europe) of C. russula. C. osorio clusters together with C. russula from Spain, indicating conspecificy. This suggests a recent introduction from Spain by human.

    The Zarudny’s rock shrew, Crocidura zarudnyi Ognev, 1928, is found in very few localities in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. Therefore, a record of the occurrence of additional populations of this species is very interesting. During surveys in Zabol (Iran), we caught three adult males of Crocidura sp. Based on external, dental and cranial measurements as well as genetic analyses, the individuals were identified as C. zarudnyi, which represents the first record of this species in this area. Kirstukas Crocidura zarudnyi Ognev, 1928 aptinkamas labai nedaugelyje Afganistano, Pakistano ir Irano vietovių, todėl naujos radimvietės yra svarbios rūsies paplitimo įvertinimui. Tyrimų Zabole (Iranas) metu sugauti trys suauge Crocidura sp. patinėliai, kurie pagal isorinius, dantų ir kaukolės matmenis bei genetinės analizės rezultatus buvo identifikuoti kaip C. zarudnyi. Tai nauja rūsies radimvietė Zabole.

    Background Tanganya virus (TGNV), the only shrew-associated hantavirus reported to date from sub-Saharan Africa, is harbored by the Therese's shrew (Crocidura theresae), and is phylogenetically distinct from Thottapalayam virus (TPMV) in the Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus) and Imjin virus (MJNV) in the Ussuri white-toothed shrew (Crocidura lasiura). The existence of myriad soricid-borne hantaviruses in Eurasia and North America would predict the presence of additional hantaviruses in sub-Saharan Africa, where multiple shrew lineages have evolved and diversified.

    Recent investigations of Southeast Asian white toothed shrews belonging to the genus Crocidura have revealed discrepancies between the results of morphological and molecular studies. The following study concerns three species of Crocidura occurring in Vietnam, namely Crocidura attenuata, Crocidura tanakae and Crocidura wuchihensis, and an undescribed fourth species revealed by molecular analysis. For many years Crocidura attenuata has been known to occur in Vietnam but, until very recently, the morphologically similar and comparably sized Crocidura tanakae was believed to be restricted to Taiwan. Following several molecular studies over the last few years, this species is now believed to be considerably more widespread and recognised as occuring also in Vietnam. The results of one of these recent molecular studies also revealed the presence of an undescribed species of Crocidura, similar in size and morphology to Crocidura wuchihensis, which is herein described. Data are provided on geographical variation in Vietnam and the problems of defining morphologically similar yet molecularly disparate species are discussed.

    New findings of the white-toothed shrews (Crocidura spp.) from offshore islands of Vietnam are reported. The species identifications have been confirmed by the analysis of complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1140 bp). Crocidura phuquocensis is the only species found in the Phu Quoc Island. Crocidura fuliginosa has been recorded from two islands of the Con Dao Archipelago (Con Son and Bai Canh). The occurrence of Crocidura fuliginosa in Vietnam has been genetically confirmed for the first time. Crocidura attenuata has been collected from the Cat Ba Island for the first time, and this finding corresponds well with the proposal that the species’ distribution is confined to the north and east of the Red River only.

    We explored the patterning of genetic diversity within white-toothed shrews of the genus Crocidura from 14 localities across Vietnam. An analysis of cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (cytb) gene fragments from 185 specimens of white-toothed shrews of the genus Crocidura from 14 localities across Vietnam revealed six deeply divergent (p-distance for both COI and cytb >10%) lineages, corresponding to the morphological species C. sokolovi, C. zaitsevi, C. phuquocensis, . indochinensis, C. tanakae and, C. phanluongi. Crocidura sokolovi was distinct from all other Vietnamese white-toothed shrews (~13% on average for both cytb and COI). In addition to demonstrating the genetic separation of previously described species, substantial cryptic genetic diversity was revealed. Crocidura zaitsevi and C. tanakae each included two subgroups that corresponded to geographically remote localities, while C. indochinensis contained two distinct subgroups that exhibited co-varying patterns of morphological and ecological differentiation, suggesting that the individuals from Sa Pa represent a separate species (provisionally named Crocidura sp. AB1). Mitochondrial data generated for the type specimens of C. phanluongi from Yok Don and Bu Gia Map supported the validity of the species while an additional specimen from Binh Chau, South Vietnam originally referred to C. phanluongi exhibited a deep genetic split (cytb: 8.4%; COI: 8.7%) from a neighbouring population in Yok Don. We propose that the specimen from Binh Chau also represents an undescribed species (provisionally named Crocidura sp. AB2). Our cytb data were then compared to the sequences of 28 species of Crocidura from Southeast Asia available in GenBank, suggesting that three more species occur in northern Vietnam, namely C. wuchihensis, C. attenuata and C. fuliginosa/C. dracula. The discovery of fairly deep genetic divergences among Vietnamese Crocidura illustrates that the understudied and largely undescribed diversity of white-toothed shrews in Southeast Asia requires deeper scrutiny. It also shows the useful insights of mitochondrial markers as to the taxonomic resolution of this enigmatic group of mammals.

    Knowledge of the Soricidae occurring in Vietnam has recently expanded with the discovery of several species previously unknown to science. Here we describe a new species of white-toothed shrew belonging to the genus Crocidura from lowland areas in southern Vietnam and from a river valley in north-eastern Cambodia. This small to medium sized species is diagnosed on the basis of external features, cranial proportions and morphology of the last upper and lower molars. Comparisons are made with other species of Crocidura known to occur in Vietnam and the biogeography of the regions where the new species has been found, is briefly discussed.

    Two new species of white-toothed shrews, Crocidura zaitsevi and C. sokolovi are described from Ngoc Linh Mountain (Kon Tum Province, Vietnam). Comparisons are provided with other species of Crocidura known to occur in Vietnam. Crocidura zaitsevi is very small in size, comparable only to C. kegoensis described from Central Vietnam and distinguished by its moderately long tail and cranial features. Crocidura sokolovi is similar in size to C. attenuata but differs in pelage colour, relatively longer tail, and cranial and dental features. Both new species are currently known only from Ngoc Linh Mountain.
