    Cahiers d’histoire. Revue d’histoire critique, 2021
    Co-Authors: Pettinaroli Laura
    Abstract:

Associated with the communist movement from the beginning of the 1920s, the French proletarian freethinkers (Libre pensée d'action sociale 1921-1924, libre pensée révolutionnaire 1926-1932, Association des travailleurs sans dieu 1933-1936) anchored their anti-religious critique in the class struggle. They also regularly emphasized sexual issues from different angles, ranging from vigorous denunciation of clerical pedophilia to defense of neo-Malthusianism, feminism, and the Soviet achievements on divorce and abortion legislation. This article, focusing on the printed sources of the proletarian freethinkers, illustrates a little-known aspect of these Cultural Organizations linked to the communist movement, thus opening perspectives on communist sexual morality and its relationship to the then dominant bourgeois and Christian model

Associação Latino-Americana de Estudos do Discurso, 2020
    Co-Authors: Camejo Estrella
    Abstract:

We present the results of the analysis of the written texts produced by eleven (11) Venezuelan Cultural Organizations and submitted for their nomination in an international competition. Based on Systemic Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1984) and Appraisal Theory (White, 2000) we set out to study the construction of Cultural identity. Thus, we identified how people who write on behalf of Organizations present themselves as well as the ways in which the semantic processes in the text are related to their activity and how their relationship with others is expressed. The results show that Organizations often present themselves as promoters of their intangible Cultural heritage. Under no circumstances do they present themselves in relation to their interlocutors. The semantic processes with which they construct their identities are associated with different forms of self-preservation. They show openness to diversity, but their partners are potential, not real. The results suggest that Cultural Organizations do not use the appropriate discourse strategies that would enable them to build persuasive texts. • do donors care about results an analysis of nonprofit arts and Cultural Organizations
Public Performance & Management Review, 2016
    Co-Authors: Cleopatra Charles, Mirae Kim
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT:Nonprofits are facing increasing pressure to measure and demonstrate their performance outcomes. However, we know little about the relationship between a nonprofit’s performance and its ability to attract donations. Do donors value an organization’s performance information when making giving decisions? We find that Organizations that are more successful (i.e., attract larger audiences to their programs and more visitors to their websites) tend to receive fewer contributions. Despite a growing culture of performance measurement, the empirical evidence does not provide strong support of its relevance among donors. A plausible theoretical reasoning is that better performance outcomes create the image of success, making Organizations look less needy. These results call for more research on the link between performance outcomes and philanthropy.

  • the art of growth ties between development Organizations and the performing arts
    Urban Affairs Review, 1991
    Co-Authors: Allen J Whitit, John C Lammers
    Abstract:

The intent of this study is to show that (1) the arts have come to play an important role in urban growth, (2) this role is an important motivation for corporate giving to Cultural Organizations, and (3) the coalescence of interests between arts Organizations and development forces is evidenced by direct ties between downtown development-oriented Organizations and major arts Organizations. The extent of overlapping directorships between development and arts Organizations is compared with overlaps of directorships tying other types of civic Organizations to the development Organizations. The setting for the study is Louisville, Kentucky, a city in which economic and growth problems recently have been faced by heavily investing in an arts-based growth strategy.
