From minority to cross-Cultural Programmes: Dutch media policy and the politics of integration
International Communication Gazette, 2011Co-Authors: Isabel Awad, Andrea RothAbstract:Dutch media policy on Cultural diversity has undergone an important transformation in the last decades. Support for minority media has been replaced by a focus on cross-Cultural media targeted at multiple (and in many cases, all) social groups. Although the shift is related to changes in the economics of the media industry and in the composition of Dutch society, it can only be fully understood in relation to the changing politics on immigration and integration in the Netherlands. By underscoring the connection between recent changes in media policy and the broader political context, this article aims at re-politicizing discussions about the media in Culturally diverse societies and about the role of the state in supporting minorities’ effective participation in democracy.

Aesthetic Engagement: Anna Zanoli’s Cultural Programmes for the RAI (1968–1974)
Italian Studies, 2016Co-Authors: Monica SegerAbstract:This essay examines a series of television Programmes produced by Anna Zanoli for the RAI during the years 1968 to 1974. Each episode of the Programmes in question is hosted by a notable Cultural figure and dedicated to the promotion of a ‘forgotten’ work of Italian art, architectural monument or landscape. The essay argues that by exploring Italy’s rich visual-Cultural patrimony through the use of a new popular media, Zanoli’s Programmes seek to redefine Italian culture as simultaneously high and low. Furthermore, by featuring well-known hosts from the worlds of cinema, literature, and politics, the Programmes engage with the question of impegno as they propose an ethical commitment to aesthetic appreciation.

Making sense of multiplicity: evaluating Scotland's Cultural Olympiad
Journal of Policy Research in Tourism Leisure and Events, 2014Co-Authors: Tamsin Cox, David Mcgillivray, Gayle McphersonAbstract:This article focuses on issues that arise in designing and undertaking evaluations of complex, multilevel and multi-agency Cultural Programmes which have become increasingly commonplace as part of major sporting events. The article draws on a process and outcome evaluation of Scotland's London 2012 Cultural Programme, the Scottish response to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. After setting out the current state of play in event evaluation, the article makes explicit and considers a set of practical challenges for designing and undertaking research and evaluation activities, particularly where those activities seek to provide some assessment of the value of such Programmes. It considers the problematic nature of multiple and, sometimes, competing levels of activity, which claim different models, intentions and (ultimately) meanings. The authors conclude that there is a need for greater strategic development of frameworks for evaluation in advance of similar Programmes of activity, as well as strengthened ...

Capturing the Cultural Olympiad in Scotland: the case for multi-criteria analysis
Cultural Trends, 2013Co-Authors: David Mcgillivray, Gayle McphersonAbstract:This article examines the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad through the lens of a devolved Scotland, exploring how the Scottish Cultural Programmes and projects are being evaluated, and what this approach might offer for the wider UK and international context. Structurally, the article begins with a discussion of the relationship between sporting mega-events and culture, focusing specifically (although not exclusively) on the sport and Cultural nexus around the Olympic Games. The discussion then moves to consider conceptual, policy and practice debates around Cultural value, examining the extent to which existing research tools and techniques satisfactorily capture the contribution of culture to major events, public and social policy. Methodologically, the article draws on elite interviews with strategic stakeholders directly involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of Scotland's London 2012 Cultural Programme. The authors conclude that, when taken alongside other Cultural evaluations conducted nationa...
