The reaction utilizes Et3N-promoted C–C bond cleavage, two new C–C bond formations of 1-cyanocyclopropane 1-ester and simultaneous aromatization by removal of cyano and ester groups in a domino fashion.

Compounds 1 and 2 were obtained by a completely selective and unusual Cyclodimerization of chiral (2R,1'S)- or (2S,1'S)-2-(1-aminoalkyl)epoxides 3 or 4 promoted by a mixture of diisopropylamine and boron trifluoride·diethyl etherate complex. The structure of the obtained dioxane was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A mechanism has been proposed to explain this transformation.

Therefore, the development of synthetic methods for such compounds has long been attractive. In this work, a Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction between alkenylbromides and arylbromides has been realized. Multi-substituted 1,4-dibromo-1,3-butadienes and o-bromo-2-(2-bromovinyl)benzenes underwent a Pd-catalyzed Cyclodimerization reaction to afford the corresponding multi-substituted cyclooctatetraenes and dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes, respectively, in high yields and with excellent regioselectivity.

Chemoselectivity of the process depends on the location of the three-membered ring at the indole core.

It is the first example of a reaction wherein a donor–acceptor cyclopropane provides two carbons in a newly formed ring. The described Cyclodimerization represents a general convenient approach to polyfunctionalized cyclopentanes.

These heterocumulenes are generated from partially cyclic 1,3-diaza-1,3-butadienes (1a—c) by means of a 2π+2π cycloaddition reaction with phenyl isocyanate or phenyl isothiocyanate and followed by dissociation of the resulting cycloadducts (1,3-diazetidinones (3) and 1,3-diazetidithiones (4)).
