Histological study on crude drugs pai-wei, pai-chein and indigenous species of Cynanchum in Taiwan.
The American journal of Chinese medicine, 1995Co-Authors: Chun-ching Lin, Ming-hong YenAbstract:The botanical origins of Cynanchum species (Cynanchum spp.) on the Taiwan market have been established by histological studies in the present paper. The results showed that the Chinese crude drug Pai-wei on the Taiwan market was derived from the dried roots of Cynanchum atratum Bunge; that of Pai-chein was derived from the dried roots of C. stauntonii (Decne.) Hand.-Mazz.; and the Wan-ling-shu used locally in Taiwan was derived from the dried roots of C. taiwanianum Yamazaki.

Acetophenones from Cynanchum taiwanianum
Phytochemistry, 1995Co-Authors: Pao-lin Huang, Ming-hong Yen, Chun-nan LinAbstract:A novel acetophenone derivative, cynanchone A, and a biacetophenone dimer, cynandione D, were isolated from the rhizomes of Cynanchum taiwanianum. Their structures were characterized by spectral methods.

C-21 steroidal glycosides from Cynanchum wallichii Wight
Chinese Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2009Co-Authors: Zhang Qi-huiAbstract:Aim To study C-21 glycosides of Cynanchum wallichii Wight. Methods Four compounds were isolated by means of silica gel column ODS column and HPLC,and the structures of these 4 steroidal glycosides were determined on the basis of both their physical and chemical characters and spectral analysis. Results 4 steroidal glycosides were isolated from Cynanchum wallichii Wight, and identified as:caudatin(Ⅰ),gagamine(Ⅱ),caudatin-3-O-β-D-oleandropyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-cymaropyranosyl(1→4)-β-D-cymaropyranoside(Ⅲ),qinyangshengenin-3-O-β-D-oleandropyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-cymaropyranosyl(1→4)-β-D-cymaropyranoside(Ⅳ).Conclusion Sugar chains of compounds Ⅲ and Ⅳ were composed of 2,6-dideoxy-pyranoses and both were isolated from Cynanchum wallichii Wight.for the first time.

Cynanchum and the Cynanchinae (Apocynaceae – Asclepiadoideae): a molecular, anatomical and latex triterpenoid study
Organisms Diversity & Evolution, 2002Co-Authors: Sigrid Liede, Henning KunzeAbstract:Abstract The phylogeny of the genus Cynanchum s. str. is studied using cpDNA spacers and ITS. Morphological, anatomical and latex triterpenoid data are interpreted in light of the molecular results, and discrepancies are discussed. Vegetative characters are better indicators of relationship than floral characters, especially corona characters. The monophyly of all Malagasy species and, nested within the latter, of all stem-succulent taxa is ascertained and the genera Folotsia, Karimbolea, Platykeleba and Sarcostemma are subsumed under Cynanchum. One African species, C. galgalense, is excluded from Cynanchum.

Circumscription of the Genus Cynanchum (Apocynaceae—Asclepiadoideae)
Systematic Botany, 2009Co-Authors: Sigrid Liede, Angelika TäuberAbstract:Abstract Analysis of the trnT-trnL spacer, the trnL intron and the trnL-trnF spacer of 65 species of Cynanchum, 33 members of the Metastelminae, and seven representatives of other Asclepiadeae shows that Cynanchum in its present circumscription is polyphyletic. Both the genus Cynanchum and the subtribe Metastelminae s.l. split along the Old World—New World geographic division. The only exception to this division is Cynanchum subgenus Mellichampia, which belongs to Cynanchum s. str. For the Old World Cynanchum relatives, the subtribe Cynanchinae is re-established. The remaining New World sections of Cynanchum are not monophyletic. The South American members of section Cynanchum join the morphologically aberrant Grisebachiella hieronymi. Section Macbridea is associated with Funastrum. In the Old World, the succulent genera Folotsia, Karimbolea, Platykeleba, and Sarcostemma are monophyletic with stem-succulent Cynanchum and nested within a clade of exclusively Malagasy Cynanchum species. Dissolution of Cynanchum sect. Macbridea (Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae)
Nordic Journal of Botany, 2002Co-Authors: Sigrid Liede, Ulrich MeveAbstract:As a consequence of the recently established polyphyly of American Cynanchum (Apocynaceae—Asclepiadoideae), the former section Macbridea is analyzed in detail using molecular, karyological and morphological data. Three of the five species, C. angustifolium, C. peninsulare and C. utahense, are transferred to Funastrum: F. angustifolium, F peninsulare and F utahense. The remaining two species, C. grisebachii and C wrightianum are known from the type only and it is suggested to cite them as “Cynanchum” grisebachii and “C.”wrightianum until analyzable material becomes available.
