    Resumen Se describe una variedad distintiva e infrecuente de foliculitis por Demodex Folliculorum . Las lesiones clinicas consistian en maculas hiperpigmentadas asintomaticas, no descamativas, distribuidas bajo el menton. El estudio histopatologico mostro dilatacion folicular, inflamacion perifolicular linfohistiocitaria e infestacion folicular por Demodex Folliculorum . Se observo una curacion completa de las lesiones tras tratamiento con metronidazol topico.

    Introducción: La catarata es una enfermedad que prevalece en pacientes mayores de 60 años. El Demodex es el ectoparásito microscópico que con mayor frecuencia se encuentra en la piel de los humanos. Su tasa de infestación aumenta con la edad, siendo observado en el 68-100% de la población mayor de 70 años. El Demodex Folliculorum está asociado con blefaritis y es considerado también un vector de gérmenes. Objetivo: Analizar la prevalencia de infestación palpebral por Demodex Folliculorum en pacientes programados para cirugía de catarata y sus probables consecuencias. Metodología: Se consideraron para el estudio 87 pacientes consecutivos que iban a recibir cirugía de catarata con implante de lente intraocular (facoemulsificación). Se depiló una pestaña a cada uno de ellos para analizarla bajo el microscopio de luz y observar su probable infestación por Demodex Folliculorum. Resultados: Setenta y dos pacientes (82.7%) resultaron infestados por el ectoparásito. Un único paciente presentó la formación de una membrana pupilar inflamatoria en el postoperatorio inmediato, que se resolvió con esteroides tópicos. Conclusiones: No se encontró asociación entre parasitosis palpebral por Demodex Folliculorum y complicaciones postoperatorias de cirugía de catarata, aunque esto no significa que estos pacientes no tuvieran otras implicaciones propias de la infestación

Demodex Folliculorum is the main microscopic ectoparasite founded in the human skin. Its infestation rate increases with age reaching 68 to 100% in the population over 70 years. Demodex Folliculorum is associated with blepharitis and also considered a vector for germs.AimTo analyze the prevalence of Demodex Folliculorum palpebral infestation in patients scheduled for cataract surgery and possible consequences.MethodologyEighty seven consecutive patients scheduled for cataract surgery with implantation of intraocular lens were considered for the research. An eyelash was epilated and observed under the light microscope to determine the presence of Demodex Folliculorum.ResultsSeventy two patients (82.7%) resulted infested with the ectoparasite. A single patient coursed with the formation of an inflammatory pupillary membrane in the immediate postoperative period that resolved with topical steroids.ConclusionsThere was no association between palpebral infestation with Demodex Folliculorum and serious postoperative complications following cataract surgery, but this does not mean that these patients would not present other implications related to the infestation

    Purpose. To compare the prevalence of and factors associated with Demodex brevis and Demodex Folliculorum in patients with cylindrical dandruff (CD group) and healthy controls. Methods. Eyelashes were taken from 1680 patients with CD and 1700 healthy controls in China from March 2015 to May 2017. All patients underwent a complete eye examination, and Demodex spp. were counted. The prevalence was analyzed according to age, gender, and clinical features. Results. Mean patient age was 42.93 ± 16.52 (3–88) and 39.4 ± 13.6 (7–81) years old in the CD and healthy control groups, respectively. In the CD and healthy groups, the positive rate for Demodex Folliculorum was 27.92% and 8.47%, respectively, while that for Demodex brevis was 31.67% and 6.65%, respectively. In the CD group, the prevalence of Demodex brevis was higher than that of Demodex Folliculorum, no matter in the females (33.65% versus 29.01%) or the males (28.54% versus 23.88%) in the CD group. Moreover, the numbers of Demodex Folliculorum and Demodex brevis were significantly and positively correlated with age, in both children and old patients (both ), as well as with the severity of eyelid congestion (all ). Conclusions. In a large sample population, the prevalence of Demodex brevis and Demodex Folliculorum was higher in the CD group than in healthy volunteers. In addition, the severity of eyelid congestion might be exacerbated by the number of Demodex spp., which may therefore provide a good clinical reference and objective guide.
