  • Advancing the Understanding of Suicide: The Need for Formal Theory and Rigorous Descriptive Research.
    Trends in cognitive sciences, 2020
Co-Authors: Alexander J. Millner, Donald J. Robinaugh, Matthew K. Nock
    Abstract:

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide and perhaps the most puzzling and devastating of all human behaviors. Suicide Research has primarily been guided by verbal theories containing vague constructs and poorly specified relationships. We propose two fundamental changes required to move toward a mechanistic understanding of suicide. First, we must formalize theories of suicide, expressing them as mathematical or computational models. Second, we must conduct rigorous Descriptive Research, prioritizing direct observation and precise measurement of suicidal thoughts and behaviors and of the factors posited to cause them. Together, theory formalization and rigorous Descriptive Research will facilitate abductive theory construction and strong theory testing, thereby improving the understanding and prevention of suicide and related behaviors.

  • Research Methods in TEFL Studies: Descriptive Research, Case Study, Error Analysis, and R & D
Journal of Language Teaching and Research, 2018
    Co-Authors: Haryanto Atmowardoyo
    Abstract:

Articles published in International journals have rich potentials of learning sources since their publication has been scholarly processed through the hands of journal editors. Readers can get a lot of benefits from them. One lesson we might get is the way the writers conducted their Researches. Thus, we can learn the Research methods from the models found in journal articles. This paper will elaborate the Research methods used in the teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL). The elaboration is formulated from the Research methods used by journal article writers around the world. A number of international journal articles in TEFL are taken as the corpus of the study. Using a grounded theory, varieties of Research methods in TEFL are investigated. Among of them are case study, quasi experiment, qualitative experiment, meta analysis, Descriptive Research, activity theory, error analysis, R & D, action Research, Research and development (R&D), and survey method. Due to the limited space, however, the paper will only describe four popular methods: Descriptive Research, case study, error analysis, and R & D. The description of each method is supported with examples found in international journal articles published around the world.

  • A Descriptive Research on Turkish Listed Manufacturing Companies’ Independent Audit Characteristics
    SSRN Electronic Journal, 2017
    Co-Authors: Gökberk Can
    Abstract:

Due to its necessity of analytical thinking and knowledge of business sciences, the accounting profession doesn’t require muscle strength but definitely requires a powerful brain. Also, due to the variety of clients and their industry and firm-specific specific expertise, the auditor doesn’t operate as a sole entity and requires a league of staff to continue the profession. On the other hand, the client may prefer not to work with the auditor and rotate the engagement auditor or the audit firm. This Research was decided as a tool to present a detail about Turkish listed companies’ independent audit.Using a sample of 1,668 firm*year observations between 2005 and 2015, this Research serves an insight to the audit characteristics of manufacturing companies listed on Borsa Istanbul. Descriptive statistics are presented as the opinion, audit firm type, engagement auditor gender, audit firm and engagement auditor rotations. Also using cross- variable analyses, relationship between “audit opinion and audit firm”, “audit firm and auditor gender” and “auditor gender and audit opinion” are presented. This Research contributes to the accounting literature by providing a detailed perspective on the audit structure of an emerging market.
