    Abstract:

    Industrial park is an industrial activity concentrated Area driving the regional economy. It however results in serious problems and contradictions between economic Development and environmental protection. Industrial metabolism could portray an industrial park's essence via flows among the nodes, and provide a basis for optimizing the process and improving the overall environmental and economic performance in industrial park. Comparing with the traditional metabolism analysis methods, applying ecological network analysis to industrial metabolism could reveal more detailed insight into the industrial system. In our study the flows are converted to solar emergy value using the emergy method. This paper constructed a framework based on ecological network analysis and applied it to conduct an analysis on Huai'an economic and technological Development Area. This study mainly depicts the qualitative and quantitative ecological relationships between compartments interacting with each other in the study park. Results show that Huai'an economic and technological Development Area presents mutualism and synergism overall. Integral flows reveal ultimate mutual relationships between system compartments and they are presenting positive sides for the stability of the whole system. Environment and new energy vehicles and parts manufacturing are the most dominant parts in the system, which shows improving resources efficiency and energy-saving level is the primary task park faces. The industrial metabolism of the study industrial park can be viewed as an evolutionary system with high efficiency, but this may be achieved at the expense of higher resilience. This study could reveal the processes and properties of the industrial metabolism in industrial parks, and may provide a basis for optimizing the management of industrial parks.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Nowadays industrial parks have played a massive role in promoting regional economic Development. However, due to intensive industrial activities and enormous energy consumption, industrial parks have become the main Areas for pollution emissions. China has carried out the National Demonstration Eco-industrial Parks program to solve such challenges. Industrial symbiosis is the kernel of industrial ecological construction. It aims at promoting several companies to gather in a same geographical site to share services, utility, and by-products in order to decrease environmental impacts of their industrial activities. However how to quantify the impact of industrial symbiosis on improving the sustainability of an industrial park is rarely studied. This study proposed an emergy analysis to conduct an assessment on Hefei economic and technological Development Area to quantify the performance of industrial symbiosis. Comparing with conventional evaluation methods, emergy analysis can reflect the real contribution of local ecosystem by focusing on nature's free investment, not only the economic value or the resources supplied to the industrial system. Research results show that industrial symbiosis operations improve the study Area's sustainable Development ability by 33%. Specifically, non-renewable inputs, imported resource inputs, and associated services could be saved by 99.71%, 25.64%, and 9.82%, and the ratio of the money saving to the total gross domestic product of the industrial park would be 29.71%. By examining industrial symbiosis practices in detail within the system, this paper can describe the process of the industrial symbiosis and how these industrial symbiosis practices influence the overall performance of the industrial park. This study indicates that industrial symbiosis could effectively reduce raw materials and energy consumption and improve the overall sustainability, which can help policy-makers make decisions.

    To address the pollution that accompanies rapid industrial growth in China, a National Eco-industrial Park Demonstration Program was launched in 2000. This article provides a case study of the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA). The emergence of an environmental institution in TEDA is used as a backdrop to assess how TEDA has transformed itself into one of the top three national eco-industrial parks in China. Following two years of field research, a network of 81 inter-firm symbiotic relationships formed in TEDA during the past 16 years were identified involving the utility, automobile, electronics, biotechnology, food and beverage, and resource recovery clusters. The article assesses the environmental benefits of the key symbiotic exchanges in TEDA and summarizes some unique characteristics of EIP progress in a developing country.

    Abstract:

    Recharge zones and sources in an urban setup (NCT of Delhi, India) were identified using environmental isotopes (2H, 3H, 18O); they were then correlated with hydrogeological conditions. The isotopic results showed that groundwater is being recharged by surface water during the dry season, while recharge associated with local precipitation becomes prominent during the monsoon. The effect of source-water evaporation and altitude on the isotopic characteristics of groundwater was clearly noted. A gradual increase in groundwater age, i.e. decrease in tritium content, while moving away from the river/canals/drains, suggests a degree of mixing of old-aged groundwater with relatively young recharging water. Further, to substantiate the findings of isotopic investigations, surface recharge conditions were differentiated into potential pervious (recharge prone) and impervious (recharge resistant) surfaces through mapping of potential recharge Areas based on soil type and water-table depth, to depict a three-dimensional illustration of hydrogeologically mediated recharge zones of the Area. The hydrogeological evidence thus obtained about the spatial distribution of permeable zones, slope and boundary conditions, aptly substantiates the isotopic findings. The study seeks its impact by correlation of the isotopic findings with the regional groundwater flow regime which has been altered by the urban Development.
