    Abstract:

    Cyber-physical system (CPS) Development Tool chains are widely used in the design, simulation, and verification of CPS data-flow models. Commercial CPS Tool chains such as MathWorks' Simulink generate artifacts such as code binaries that are widely deployed in embedded systems. Hardening such Tool chains by testing is crucial since formally verifying them is currently infeasible. Existing differential testing frameworks such as CyFuzz can not generate models rich in language features, partly because these Tool chains do not leverage the available informal Simulink specifications. Furthermore, no study of existing Simulink models is available, which could guide CyFuzz to generate realistic models. To address these shortcomings, we created the first large collection of public Simulink models and used the collected models' properties to guide random model generation. To further guide model generation we systematically collected semi-formal Simulink specifications. In our experiments on several hundred models, the resulting SLforge generator was more effective and efficient than the state-of-the-art Tool CyFuzz. SLforge also found 8 new confirmed bugs in Simulink.

    Abstract:

    Commercial Cyber-physical System (CPS) Development Tools (e.g. MathWorks' Simulink) are widely used to design, simulate and automatically generate artifacts which are deployed in safety-critical embedded hardware. CyFuzz, the state-of-the-art CPS Tool chain testing scheme is inefficient, cannot generate feature-rich inputs and is ineffective in finding new Tool chain bugs. To better understand various properties of publicly available CPS models, we conducted the first large-scale study of 391 publicly-available Simulink models. Next, we proposed an efficient CPS model-generation scheme capable of creating large, feature-rich random inputs. Our Tool realization for testing Simulink which found 8 new confirmed bugs, along with the study-artifacts are publicly available.

    Abstract:

    Security Tools can help developers build more secure software systems by helping developers detect or fix security vulnerabilities in source code. However, developers do not always use these Tools. In this paper, we investigate a number of social factors that impact developers' adoption decisions, based on a multidisciplinary field of research called diffusion of innovations. We conducted 42 one-on-one interviews with professional software developers, and our results suggest a number of ways in which security Tool adoption depends on developers' social environments and on the channels through which information about Tools is communicated. For example, some participants trusted developers with strong reputations on the Internet as much as they trust their colleagues for information about security Tools.

    In this paper, we present a model-driven, domain-centric Tool allowing the specification of service-oriented applications through abstract services composition. Executable applications, made of concrete services, are automatically generated and deployed. This Tool can be customized with domain-specific knowledge. Our contributions in this paper are to slightly extend the Tool to be used in the demanding home computing domain. An approach for modelling and implementing dynamic service composition is provided for satisfying the dynamic home environment. This work has been carried out in collaboration with Schneider Electric.

    The Development of EDA technology has shortened the cycles of microprocessor hardware design and synthesis process. At the same time, the automatic design method for the Development Tool chain beoames more and more important for high performance and high efficiency embedded microprocessor design. An automatic design method based on ADL(architecture description language) for Development Tool chain is proposed in this paper. The implementation of this method in CK*CORE Development Tool chain design process is introduced. Finally, some current issues of ADL and corresponding developing directions are explored.
