The Serbian Language in the Light of Current Linguistic Theory, 4. Belgrade: Srpska Akademija nauka i umetnosti, 2010. 278 pp. Abstracts. Individual summaries. Paper.This work is the fourth volume in the series The Serbian Language in the Light of Current Linguistic Theory published by the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the most prestigious publisher of linguistic works in Serbia. Whereas the first three volumes addressed cognitive Linguistics, semantics, and ethnoLinguistics, respectively, the present collection of papers focuses on Diachronic Linguistics. Unlike the first two volumes in the series, which are confined to Serbian, this and the previous volume have a broader perspective and encompass other Slavic languages.The collection reviewed here consists of sixteen papers written in English, German, and various Slavic languages by Austrian, Belgian, Czech, German, Macedonian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, and Serbian Slavists. The decision to organize the papers alphabetically by author (rather than thematically) was appropriate in view of their great diversity. Each paper includes an abstract in the language in which it is written and a summary in another language. The volume contains a short foreword with basic information about its contents.The first paper, by Jan Ivar Bjornflaten, is titled "Grammaticalization and Typological Change: The Plural Paradigm of Russian Substantives." The next paper takes us to a completely different area, as Radoslav Vecerk, a prominent Paleoslavist, discusses the origin of the Glagolitic script. The third paper, in which Jasmina Grkovic-Major addresses cognitive aspects of the development of transitivity, is an exemplary contribution to what this collection was envisaged to be, i.e., she investigates a concrete Slavic Diachronic phenomenon using a major contemporary theoretical approach. Many other contributions to this volume deviate from this exemplar mainly by being insufficiently informed by contemporary theories of Linguistics. The next paper is an analysis of Slavic historical phraseology by Rainer Eckert. The following contribution by liona Janyskova presents the methodology of eminent Czech etymologist Vaclav Machek. The next paper is an analysis of the interplay between Diachronic etymology and dialectology drawn from experience with the ongoing Serbian etymological dictionary project undertaken by Aleksandar Loma. …

  • Improving semantic change analysis by combining word embeddings and word frequencies

    Language is constantly evolving. As part of Diachronic Linguistics, semantic change analysis examines how the meanings of words evolve over time. Such semantic awareness is important to retrieve content from digital libraries. Recent research on semantic change analysis relying on word embeddings has yielded significant improvements over previous work. However, a recent, but somewhat neglected observation so far is that the rate of semantic shift negatively correlates with word-usage frequency. In this article, we therefore propose SCAF, Semantic Change Analysis with Frequency . It abstracts from the concrete embeddings and includes word frequencies as an orthogonal feature. SCAF allows using different combinations of embedding type, optimization algorithm and alignment method. Additionally, we leverage existing approaches for time series analysis, by using change detection methods to identify semantic shifts. In an evaluation with a realistic setup, SCAF achieves better detection rates than prior approaches, 95% instead of 51%. On the Google Books Ngram data set, our approach detects both known and yet unknown shifts for popular words.

    The field of computational Linguistics has been dealing with the modeling of natural language from a compu-tational perspective since the 1950s. However, the usage of advanced and interactive visualization techniques is very limited. This is especially the case of Diachronic Linguistics, which is devoted to the study of language change. This work is part of a project that aims to provide novel highly interactive visual solutions to ease the task of lexicographers, ensuring a rigorous treatment of the vocabulary beyond the use of traditional lexico-graphic sources and overcoming certain limitations of corpus Linguistics. This article focuses on the choices made for the design and development of an interactive visual tool that supports different tasks related to the processes of drawing up and consulting historical dictionaries. Particularly, we describe solutions for the exploitation, analysis, and expert-directed validation of the data compiled in the available dictionaries in a manner that is both automatic (provided by computational methods) and intelligent (provided by the experts). We thus describe diachronlex diagrams, an interactive visual solution that facilitates linguistic work related to the understanding of the temporal evolution and the lexical relationships between the different meanings registered in subsequent editions of a dictionary.

    Abstract:

    Information technology, through the advances provided by computational Linguistics and related disciplines, has opened the door to previously unthinkable possibilities of study in Linguistics. The wealth and diversity of sources that is now available is fundamental to the understanding of language evolution and dictionary-making. However, these advancements are paired with a paradigm shift, in which both the user needs and the modes in which the users interact with technology have changed so much and so rapidly, that modern lexicography would need to resort to a new generation of tools to support its tasks. We present our work developed for the Nuevo Diccionario Historico del Espanol (NDHE), in which the challenges of enabling deeper insight and supporting new user's tasks in Diachronic Linguistics have been approached from a human-computer interaction perspective. Thus, in contrast to what has happened in other disciplines in which visual analytics has focused its efforts since earlier, the analysis tools that are made now in the hands of the experts usually provide a volume of "raw" data so vast, that the data themselves can greatly hinder the work of experts. The Linguistics community has already recognized the key importance of user-friendly interfaces. However, neither more powerful tools (in terms of automatic processing) nor user-friendliness alone are sufficient to support typical analytical tasks that take out the most from the multidimensional and ever-growing data stored in corpora and dictionaries. This paper discusses the benefits of producing corpus and dictionary analysis tools that go beyond user-friendliness and presents, interactive visual analysis tools produced for the NDHE and its sources.

    Abstract:

    The paper provides an overview of a number of recent presentations of the Indo-European family tree and the split off its branches, as found in standard textbooks on the topic. These views are contrasted against the results of a workshop, The Indo-European family tree (University of Copenhagen, 15–17 Feb. 2017). Our account specifically addresses whether there are reasons to assume the existence of Italo-Celtic, Graeco-Armenian and what is the position of the Germanic branch in the tree. The use of new archaeological methods, computational cladistics and DNA-studies and their possible importance for Diachronic Linguistics are also mentioned.
