PHYLOGENETIC PLACEMENT OF THE WHITE COCONUT SCALE, PARLAGENA BENNETTI WILLIAMS (HEMIPTERA Diaspididae)
Redia-Giornale Di Zoologia, 2017Co-Authors: Matthew E. Gruwell, Skylar Woolman, Takumasa KondoAbstract:Parlagen a bennetti Williams (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is commonly known as the coconut scale and has only been collected in some islands in the Caribbean, Central America and the northernmost countries of South America. The species P. bennetti has been placed in Parlagena , a genus of few species currently considered as closely related to Parlatoria Targioni Tozzetti, but it has never been involved in molecular phylogenetic analysis. Here we include data from three genes of P. bennetti with 32 other armored scale insects and one outgroup to determine the correct placement of this species among armored scale insects. Both combined analysis and individual genealogies demonstrate the probable placement of this species in the subfamily Diaspidinae, likely as part of the tribe Lepidosaphidini.

First record of the Bermuda grass scale Odonaspis ruthae Kotinsky, 1915(Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae) in Colombia
2016Co-Authors: José Mauricio Montes Rodríguez, Takumasa KondoAbstract:The Bermuda grass scale Odonaspis ruthae Kotinsky, 1915 (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae) is reported for the first time in Colombia. The scale insect was collected in two localities, in northwestern and southwestern Colombia. This is the first record of the tribe Odonaspidini in Colombia. Aspects of the distribution and biology of the species are discussed. A key to separate the species of Odonaspis recorded in the Neotropical region is provided.

2015Co-Authors: Takumasa Kondo, Gillian W. Watson, Penelope J. Gullan, Alex Enrique Bustillo Pardey, Luis Guillermo MonteseAbstract:The white coconut scale, Parlagena bennetti Williams, 1969 (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is reported for the fi rst time on New Zealand fl ax, Phormium tenax J.R. Forst. & G. Forst. (Xanthorrhoeaceae), coconut, Cocos nucifera L., Manila palm, Veitchia merrillii (Becc.) H.E. Moore, oil palm, Elaeis guineensis Jacq. and an oil palm hybrid OxG: E. oleifera x E. guineensis (Arecaceae) in continental Colombia, and on coconut from Venezuela. Previously, P. bennetti was known only on the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and San Andres, causing serious damage to coconut, its only known host until now. A brief characterization of P. bennetti and an updated list of 23 species of scale insects of the family Diaspididae reported worldwide on Elaeis spp. is provided.

THE SCALE INSECTS OF IRAN Part 1 THE ARMOURED SCALES (HEMIPTERA: COCCOMORPHA: Diaspididae)
Zootaxa, 2021Co-Authors: Masumeh Moghaddam, Gillian W. WatsonAbstract:Iran is situated at the junctions of the Palaearctic and Oriental zoogeographical regions, and the Caspian, Baluchi and Irano-Tiranian floral zones, so it has a very diverse scale insect fauna. Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) are economically important in forestry, agriculture and horticulture. This taxonomic account of the armoured scales (Diaspididae) of Iran is the first of three works planned to cover all the scale insects in the country. It provides a resource for accurate laboratory identification of all the species known to occur in Iran or that are likely to be found there. Keys to the families of scale insects found in Iran, and to the 49 genera and 144 species of Diaspididae found there, are provided. Detailed line drawings of all the species known to occur in Iran are provided to facilitate identification. These are accompanied by detailed descriptions, distribution data, information on natural enemies, economic importance and host-plants recorded in Iran. The main purpose of the work is to provide agricultural entomologists concerned with pest control and quarantine inspection worldwide with a reliable means of species identification.

Erstnachweis der räuberischen Gallmücke Lestodiplosis diaspidis (Kieffer, 1910) (Nematocera: Cecidomyiidae) als Prädator der Maulbeerschildlaus Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti, 1886) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) in Deutschland
Erwerbs-Obstbau, 2016Co-Authors: Helmut Rauleder, Klaus Schrameyer, Olaf ZimmermannAbstract:In 2015 within an initial test for the biological regulation of the White Scale (Diaspididae: Pseudaulacaspis pentagona ) in a fruit orchard near house gardens in Pfinztal-Soellingen near Karlsruhe on heavily infested mulberry ( Morus nigrum ) a predatory gall midge Lestodiplosis diaspidis (Kieffer, 1910) (Nematocera: Cecidomyiidae) has been detected. This is the first record of this beneficial species for Germany. The importance of this gall midge as an antagonist of White Scale should be investigated in further studies.
