    Abstract:

    Abstract This article compared the relationships among management control systems (MCS), business Strategy and firm performance in family businesses (FBs) and non-family businesses (NFBs) in the context of a transition economy in sub-Saharan Africa that has not been previously studied – Ghana. The findings indicated that the influence of MCS on business Strategy is contingent on whether the firm is a FB or NFB. The influence of (i) DCS on the cost leadership Strategy is stronger for NFBs than FBs; (ii) ICS on the Differentiation Strategy is stronger for FBs than NFBs; and (iii) the dynamic tension created by the joint use of DCS and ICS on both the cost leadership and Differentiation strategies is stronger for FBs than NFBs. Moreover, business Strategy mediates the MCS-performance relationships; however, both the indirect and total impacts of MCS on performance are stronger for FBs than NFBs.

    Abstract:

    This study examines the competitive strategic choices of international joint ventures (IJVs) and their performance implications in a low-income emerging economy in Sub-Saharan Africa -- Ghana. Using the resource-based view of the firm, it is argued that IJVs with partners from emerging economies are more likely to pursue an efficiency-oriented business Strategy to strengthen their strategic positioning, competitiveness and performance. Conversely, IJVs with partners from advanced industrialized economies would be more likely to pursue a market effectiveness-oriented Strategy to strengthen their strategic positioning, competitiveness and performance. The findings from 76 IJVs offer support for the hypothesized relationships. IJVs with partners from emerging economies implementing an efficiency-oriented Strategy of cost leadership outperform those with partners from advanced industrialized economies implementing the same Strategy. In contrast, IJVs with partners from advanced industrialized economies implementing a Differentiation Strategy outperform those with partners from emerging economies implementing a Differentiation Strategy.

    Abstract:

    This study examines the performance implications of implementing generic competitive strategies, and whether the implementation of a combination competitive Strategy yields an incremental performance benefit over a single generic competitive Strategy using data from Ghana, a Sub-Saharan African economy implementing economic liberalization policies. Two types of singular generic competitive strategies are analyzed: cost-leadership and Differentiation. Our findings from the overall sample provide support for the viability and profitability of implementing coherent generic competitive strategies -- cost-leadership, Differentiation, and the combination of the singular strategies. The results further indicate that firms implementing a combination Strategy tend to experience substantial incremental performance benefits over those implementing only the cost-leadership Strategy. However, the incremental performance benefits to firms implementing a combination Strategy do not significantly differ from the performance of firms implementing only the Differentiation Strategy. Furthermore, firms that implement a coherent competitive Strategy (combination, cost-leadership, or Differentiation) tend to gain considerable incremental performance benefits over firms that are stuck-in-the-middle. Implications are discussed.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This paper examines the relationship between manufacturing Strategy and competitive Strategy and their influence on firm performance. We test how competitive Strategy influences manufacturing Strategy and also examine the impact that manufacturing Strategy and competitive Strategy have on firm performance among Ghanaian manufacturing firms. We found significant and positive relationships between competitive Strategy and the manufacturing strategies of cost, delivery, flexibility, and quality. The findings also indicate that quality is the only manufacturing Strategy component that influences performance. Our results further show that although competitive Strategy does not directly affect firm performance, it does so indirectly through quality. Thus, whether a firm chooses to pursue a cost leadership or a Differentiation Strategy an emphasis on quality provides the most benefits with regard to firm performance. An emphasis on quality appears to provide a means by which companies can mitigate the effects of increased competition resulting from the economic reforms within the Ghanaian manufacturing environment.

    Human embryonic stem (hES) cells represent a potentially unlimited source of transplantable beta-cells for the treatment of diabetes. Here we describe a Differentiation Strategy that reproducibly directs HES3, an National Institutes of Health (NIH)-registered hES cell line, into cells of the pancreatic endocrine lineage. HES3 cells are removed from their feeder layer and cultured as embryoid bodies in a three-dimensional matrix in the presence of Activin A and Bmp4 to induce definitive endoderm. Next, growth factors known to promote the proliferation and Differentiation of pancreatic ductal epithelial cells to glucose-sensing, insulin-secreting beta-cells are added. Pdx1 expression, which identifies pancreatic progenitors, is detected as early as day 12 of Differentiation. By day 34, Pdx1+ cells comprise between 5% and 20% of the total cell population and Insulin gene expression is up-regulated, with release of C-peptide into the culture medium. Unlike another recent report of the induction of insulin+ cells in differentiated hES cell populations, we are unable to detect the expression of other pancreatic hormones in insulin+ cells. When transplanted into severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice, differentiated cell populations retain their endocrine identity and synthesize insulin.

    Abstract Abnormalities in parvalbumin (PV)-expressing interneurons cause neurodevelopmental disorders such as epilepsy, autism, and schizophrenia. Unlike other types of neurons that can be efficiently differentiated from pluripotent stem cells, PV neurons were minimally generated using a conventional Differentiation Strategy. In this study, we developed an adenovirus-based transDifferentiation Strategy that incorporates an additional chemical compound for the efficient generation of induced PV (iPV) neurons. The chemical compound forskolin combined with Ascl1 induced approximately 80% of mouse fibroblasts to iPV neurons. The iPV neurons generated by this procedure matured 5-7 days post infection and were characterized by electrophysiological properties and known neuronal markers, such as PV and GABA. Our studies therefore identified an efficient approach for generating PV neurons.
