In this second part, the aim is to investigate the second two aspects: Project products and deliverables and assumptions and constraints that will affect the Project.Design/methodology/approach – The methodology of this article is based on a review of the literature as well as best practice in the field.Findings – Project products and deliverables must be accurately defined and described to ensure a successful Project plan. Additionally, an often overlooked aspect of Project management is defining the assumptions and constraints (both internal and external) that will affect the environment of the Project implementation.Originality/value – Project managers who follow the recommendations and practices outlined in this article will help ensure the ultimate success of their Project plans.

Knowledge management as a method for supporting Digital Library Projects

Frank CervoneAbstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to define and describe a low‐barrier method of implementing knowledge management as a mechanism for supporting Digital Library Projects and processes.Design/methodology/approach – This article provides a general overview of knowledge management and some low‐barrier methods for implementing a knowledge exchange program in a Library.Findings – Knowledge management (KM) is a useful tool for facilitating Projects and processes in the Digital Library. By implementing a knowledge management program using familiar tools and in an incremental fashion, a Library can gain the benefits of a KM program in an orderly and non‐disruptive manner.Originality/value – This paper fills a gap in the Digital Library Project management literature by providing an overview of knowledge management and its role in Digital Library management.

Understanding agile Project management methods using Scrum

Design/methodology/approach – This paper provides a general overview and introduction to the concepts of agile Project management and the Scrum methodology in particular. Findings – Agile Project management using the Scrum methodology allows Project teams to manage Digital Library Projects more effectively by decreasing the amount of overhead dedicated to managing the Project. Using an iterative process of continuous review and short-design time frames, the Project team is better able to quickly adapt Projects to rapidly evolving environments in which systems will be used. Originality/value – This paper fills a gap in the Digital Library Project management literature by providing an overview of agile Project management methods.

Building the InfoBus: A Review of Technical Choices in the Stanford Digital Library Project

Our InfoBus, a CORBA-based distributed object infrastructure, unifies access to heterogeneous document collections and information processing services. We organize search access using a protocol (DLIOP) that is tailored for use with distributed objects. A metadata architecture supports novel user interfaces and query translation facilities. We briefly explain these components and then describe how technology choices such as distributed objects, commercial cataloguing schemes and Java, helped and hindered our progress. We also describe the evolution of our design tradeoffs.

These services include both search services and remotely usable information processing facilities. In this paper, we survey and categorize the metadata required for a diverse set of Stanford Digital Library services that we have built. We then propose an extensible metadata architecture that meets these requirements. Our metadata architecture fits into our established infrastructure and promotes interoperability among existing and de-facto metadata standards. Several pieces of this architecture are implemented; others are under construction. The architecture includes attribute model proxies, attribute model translation services, metadata information facilities for search services, and local metadata repositories. In presenting and discussing the pieces of the architecture, we show how they address our motivating requirements. Together, these components provide, exchange, and describe metadata for information objects and metadata for information services. We also consider how our architecture relates to prior, relevant work on these two types of metadata.

Combining CORBA and the World-Wide Web in the Stanford Digital Library Project

Another such service we interface to is InterBib which is our own BibTex/Refer to HTML/Framemaker format converter and document bibliography construction tool.

Towards Interoperability in Digital Libraries: Overview and Selected Highlights of the Stanford Digital Library Project

Ketchpel, Martin Röscheisen, Terry WinogradAbstract:We outline the scope of the Stanford Digital Library Project which covers five areas: user interface work, technologies for locating information and Library services, the emerging economic perspective of Digital libraries, infrastructure technology and the use of agent technologies to support all of these aspects. We describe technical details for two specific efforts that have been realized in prototype implementions. First, we describe how we employ distributed object technology to move towards an implementation of our InfoBus vision. The InfoBus consists of translation services and wrappers around existing protocols to cope with the problem of interoperability and the distributed nature of emerging Digital Library services. We model autonomous, heterogeneous Library services as CORBA proxy objects. This allows the construction of unified but extensible method-based interfaces for client programs to interact through. We describe how distributed objects enable the design of communication protocols that leave implementors a large degree of freedom. This is a benefit because the resulting implementations can allow users to choose among multiple performance profile tradeoffs while staying within the confines of the protocol. The second effort we cover describes InterPay which uses the object approach for an architecture that helps manage heterogeneity in payment mechanisms among autonomous services. The architecture is organized into three layers. The top layer contains elements involved in the task-level interaction with the services. The middle layer is responsible for enforcing user-specified payment policies. The lowest layer manages the mechanics of diverse online payment schemes.

European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, 1999Co-Authors: Robert WilenskyAbstract:Information technology is not merely provided enhanced versions of services of the sort we have come to expect from libraries; it is inducing a fundamental change in the way information is created, disseminated, and used. The shift from the current centralized, discrete publishing model, toward a distributed, continuous, and self-publishing model, is already underway. However, left to its own devices, some of the the better aspects of the current model, such as peer review, may be compromised, even as the opportunity for new services is afforded. Effort will also be required to provide first class support in the emerging infrastructure for data that are not textual in nature, such as images, videos, maps, and scientific data sets. Many tools and technologies will be useful in enhancing and exploiting this view of the emerging information infrastructure. One set of tools relates to document technologies. "Multivalent Documents" is a new model of documents that seems useful in this context. The multivalent document model is (i) highly open, meaning that is supports an open-ended variety of document formats and functions, (ii) highly extensible, meaning that it can be extended and customized in novel ways and to meet particular user needs, and (iii) highly distributed, meaning that components of a document may exist as separate networked resources, which are combined dynamically into a coherent documents. A particularly attractive aspect of the model is the manner in which it supports "spontaneous collaboration", the ability of a user to annotate web pages, scanned images, and other networked, resources for which that user has no privileged relation. Multivalent documents address some issues in manipulating on-line resources. Finding those resources is still problematic, especially for those in image form. "Automatic content analysis" is the set of techniques for analyzing the content of information objects so as to facilitate their subsequent access. We present some recent developments in this area for accessing document images, photographs, and text.

Libraries in the traditional sense are nowhere to be found in this model (i. e., the notion of a limited intermediary containing some small fraction of preselected material available only to local patrons is replaced by a system providing to users everywhere direct access to the full contents of all available material).

Multivalent Digital documents in UC Berkeley's Digital Library Project

Phelps, Robert WilenskyAbstract:UC Berkeley's Digital Library Project aims to develop the technologies to incorporate the use of massive, distributed, multimedia repositories into tasks to be performed by groups of users. We call this approach "work-centered Digital libraries". To develop this approach, we have been constructing a testbed focused on the California environment. This testbed involves real users from a variety of backgrounds, and a large collection of diverse kinds of data of interest to them, including environmental technical reports, computer models, county general plans, aerial and ground photography, maps, videos and databases about California biota. Our Project has broad technical objectives, seeking to incorporate in an advanced database framework better information extraction and access technology, including document recognition, natural language and computer vision techniques, supplemented with advanced user interface and authoring tools. One element of this work is a new, higher functionality model for Digital documents.

Information finding in a Digital Library: the Stanford perspective

Information finding is the research focus of the Stanford component of the ARPA-sponsored CS-TR Project, and the work has continued as one of the main thrusts in the Stanford Integrated Digital Library Project [14]. In this paper we discuss some of the emerging issues in information finding, such as text-database discovery, efficient information dissemination, and copy detection and removal. We also outline our approaches to these issues.

ICDE - Safeguarding and charging for information on the Internet

We use examples from our Stanford Digital Library Project to illustrate some of these problems and their potential solutions.
