  • The Synods of the Diocese of Tarnów as a tool for the renewal of the particular Church
    Paediatrics and Child Health, 2017
    Co-Authors: Robert Kantor
    Abstract:

This article analyses the last four synods of the Diocese of Tarnow, highlighting their structure and course. Diocesan synods grow out of the needs of the particular Church; they shape the ecclesial reality most clearly by the formulated disciplinary, pastoral and spiritual proposals, reaching the very basic ecclesiastical and social environments. Each synod has its specific meaning in the history of the Diocese, and its impact is certainly not limited to the formulated proposals. A diocesan synod has a very important function in the process of formation of the particular Church. The synods of the Diocese of Tarnow were the place of meeting of and dialogue between the bishop, the clergy and the laity of the Church in Tarnow. The present article discusses five points : ”Legal grounds”, “First Synod of the Diocese of Tarnow – 1928”, “Second Synod of the Diocese of Tarnow – 1938”, “Third Synod of the Diocese of Tarnow – 1948”, “Fourth Synod of the Diocese of Tarnow – 1986”.

  • Działalność Rady kapłańskiej diecezji tarnowskiej za czasów bpa Józefa Życińskiego w latach 1990-1997
    Tarnowskie Studia Teologiczne, 2012
    Co-Authors: Robert Kantor
    Abstract:

The Code of Canon Law gives the definition of a presbyteral council and declares: „In each Diocese a presbyteral council is to be established, that is, a group of priests which, representing the presbyterium, is to be like a senate of the bishop and which assists the bishop in the governance of the Diocese according to the norm of law to promote as much as possible the pastoral good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him”. The Fourth Synod of Tarnow Diocese reminds that a Diocese Presbyteral Council is as if the bishop’s senate with its own statues; a team of priests representing all clergy of the Diocese, both diocesan and from religious orders. During the time when the Diocese was led by bishop Życinski, there have been two terms of the Presbyteral Council with elections in 1990 and 1995. The article analyses the topics debated over by the Presbyteral Council between 1990 and 1997. Some of the following items were on the Council’s agenda: priests’ retirement age, spiritual formation of the lay members of the church, missions.

  • the transformation of female orthodox monasticism in nizhnii novgorod Diocese 1764 1929 in comparative perspective
The Journal of Modern History, 2006
    Co-Authors: William G Wagner
    Abstract:

Frustrated by his inability to improve the poor situation at his monastery, the Superior of the Ostrovoezerskii Trinity Monastery in Nizhnii Novgorod Diocese, Archmonk Ioasaf, suggested in his annual report for 1911 that the monastery be converted into a convent. “Then, perhaps,” he declared, “it will witness a renewal similar to the Makar’ev monastery, which as a male monastic community became nearly empty but, having become a female community, has now blossomed.”1 Ioasaf’s comments reflect the remarkable growth of female Orthodox monasticism that had taken place in Nizhnii Novgorod Diocese, and in the Russian Empire more broadly, over the preceding 100 years. Indeed, as appendix table A1 demonstrates, due to this growth, Russian Orthodox monasticism had become overwhelmingly female by the early twentieth century, a development that was even more pronounced in Nizhnii Novgorod Diocese (see table A2). Rapid growth, moreover, was accompanied by fundamental changes in organization, location, social composition, and, in important ways, orientation, to the point that, for some participants in the early twentieth-century debate over Russian monasticism,

  • the victorian church of england in the midlands the founding of the Diocese of southwell 1876 1884
    Midland History, 2012
    Co-Authors: J V Beckett
    Abstract:

Major changes to the diocesan structure of the Church of England began during Disraeli’s Conservative administration, 1874–80. Birmingham, Coventry, and Nottingham were all discussed as possible new cathedral cities, but the first new Diocese formed in the midlands, in 1884, was an amalgamation of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire with Southwell Minster as the cathedral. Birmingham was founded only in 1905. This article discusses the background to the formation of the new Diocese, the political context surrounding the creation of new Dioceses nationally, the debates about the geography of Southwell Diocese, and the debates about the location of the cathedral. George Ridding, the first bishop, soon discovered that the two-county Diocese did not work, reflecting the divisive effect of county loyalties. A suffragan was appointed for Derbyshire in 1889, and separate Dioceses were created in 1927 for the archdeaconries of Derby and Nottingham.
