  • New records of Dolichopodidae (Diptera) from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region of Russia

    Abstract:

    New material of Dolichopodidae has been recently collected and identified, with 41 species (25 species new for the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region, seven species found for the first time in West Siberia, and two species new for Siberia). Campsicnemus alpinus and Nematoproctus longifilus are found outside Europe for the first time. New records of five species (Dolichopus lancearius, D. setiger, D. subpennatus, Rhaphium tibiale, Thrypticus atomus) fill gaps between European and East Siberian areas of these species. In total, 64 species are recorded in this region, which apparently make up 40–50% of actual Dolichopodidae fauna in the Khanty-Mansi Region.     Abstract:

    During recent short-term surveys conducted in the Novgorod Region of Russia, 17 species of Dolichopodidae (Diptera, Brachycera, Dolichopodidae) were collected. Argyra argyria (Meigen, 1824), Campsicnemus curvipes (Fallen, 1823), Dolichopus cilifemoratus Macquart, 1827, Gymnopternus brevicornis (Staeger, 1842), Hydrophorus brunnicosus Loew, 1857, Sympycnus aeneicoxa (Meigen, 1824), Syntormon bicolorellus (Zetterstedt, 1843) and Telmaturgus tumidulus (Raddatz, 1873) were recorded in Novgorod Region for the first time. An annotated checklist of Novgorod regional fauna was compiled, including 14 genera and 44 species. In addition, current information on the geographical distribution for each species was included in the checklist

    Abstract:

    This paper provides distributional records for 18 long-legged fly species (Diptera, Brachycera, Dolichopodidae) belonging to 12 genera in Morocco. Four of these species (Diaphorus vitripennis Loew, 1859, Muscidideicus praetextatus (Haliday, 1855), Aphrosylus mitis Verrall, 1912 and Micromorphus aff. minusculus Negrobov, 2000) are newly recorded in the fauna of Morocco. In this paper a review of Moroccan Sciapus Zeller, 1842 fauna is given. Sciapus heteropygus Parent, 1926 and S. holoxanthos Parent, 1926 are found in the country for the first time.      The data on Dolichopodidae from Serbia are reviewed. New records resulting from short-term visits to Serbia in 2014 and 2015 are presented. Of the 24 species collected, 14 are recorded for the first time for Serbia. The other known species are listed, and the number of reliably reported species from the country has reached 37 species belonging to 19 genera.     Protomedetera gen. n. (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), a new genus of the subfamily Medeterinae, is described from the Oriental and Australasian realms based on four new species. Protomedetera singaporensis Grootaert & Tang, sp. n. is designated as type of the new genus. The genus is peculiar because of the small body size, the small globular first flagellomere (postpedicel), the simple male genitalia with indistinct or small epandrial lobe and half-hidden cercus. The following four new species are described and illustrated: P. biconvexa sp. n., P. biseta sp. n., P. glabra sp. n., and P. singaporensis sp. n. A key to the species of the new genus is provided

    Phoomyia Naglis & Grootaert gen. nov. is described to include two new species of beach-dwelling dolichopodine flies from coastal Sri Lanka and Thailand: Phoomyia srilankensis Naglis & Brooks sp. nov. and Phoomyia thailandensis Naglis & Grootaert sp. nov. The new genus is closely related to the genera Argyrochlamys Lamb and Pseudargyrochlamys Grich-anov, and is distinguished based on characters of the hind leg, and features of the male and female terminalia. Adults of Phoomyia are found on sandy coastal beaches often near the burrows of ghost crabs.

    Abstract:

    Abstract. The Dolichopodidae is a species-rich dipteran group with almost 7000 described species. The monophyly of the subfamilies and their relationships remain largely unknown because the polarities of key morphological characters are unclear and molecular data are available only for 9 of the 19 proposed subfamilies. Here we test whether molecular data from two nuclear (18S, 28S) and four mitochondrial (12S, 16S, Cytb, COI) genes can resolve the higher-level relationships within the family. Our study is based on 76 Oriental species from 12 dolichopodid subfamilies and uses eight species of Empididae and Hybotidae as outgroups. Parsimony and likelihood analyses confirm the monophyly of the Dolichopodidae, as well as the monophyly of five of the ten subfamilies represented by more than two species [Sympycninae, Sciapodinae, Dolichopodinae, Hydrophorinae (excluding tribe Aphrosylini), Neurigoninae]. There is strong support for restoring the tribe Aphrosylini as a separate subfamily Aphrosylinae. The monophyly of Medeterinae, Peloropeodinae and Diaphorinae is dependent on which tree reconstruction technique is used, how indels are coded, and whether the fast-evolving sites are excluded. Overall, we find that our sample of Oriental species is largely compatible with the subfamily concepts that were developed for the northern temperate fauna. However, our data provide little support for relationships between the subfamilies. Branch lengths, saturation, and distance plots suggest that this is probably the result of the rapid origin of dolichopodid subfamilies over a relatively short time. We find that genera that are difficult to place into subfamilies based on morphological characters are generally also difficult to place using molecular data. We predict that a dense, balanced taxon sample and protein-encoding nuclear genes will be needed to resolve the higher-level relationships in the Dolichopodidae.
