Does exchange rate volatility hurt Domestic Consumption? Evidence from emerging economies

KutanAbstract:Inflation volatility is said to reduce Consumption by introducing more uncertainty to consumers who try to allocate their budget toward Consumption and saving. Since exchange rate volatility contributes to inflation volatility, it is shown to have direct negative effect on Consumption. Previous research established the link between exchange rate volatility and Consumption using data from industrial countries. In this paper we provide a counter part by using data from 12 emerging economies. We find that while exchange rate uncertainty has short-run effects on Domestic Consumption of almost all countries, the short-run effects last into the long run only in half of the countries. Besides theoretical modeling of Consumption behavior, the results also have important implications for business cycles and economic growth in emerging economies.

This was based on the assumption that wages do not adjust fully to inflation and labor has a high MPC relative to that of the producers. In this paper, we argue that in addition to the exchange rate itself, exchange rate uncertainty could also affect Domestic Consumption. We demonstrate our conjecture by using quarterly data from Japan and a bounds testing approach that distinguishes the short run from the long run.

On the Relation between Currency Depreciation and Domestic Consumption - La relazione tra deprezzamento della valuta e consumi interni
2012Co-Authors: Mohsen Bahmani-oskooee, Massomeh HajileeAbstract:In a 1952 article Alexander argued that currency devaluation could lead to a decline in Domestic Consumption by redistributing income from workers with high MPC to producers with low MPC. In this paper we include the exchange rate as another determinant of Domestic Consumption in addition to income and interest rate. We estimate the model using time-series data and the bounds testing method for each of the 50 countries in our sample. In most countries, the results support Alexander’s argument in the short run but not in the long run. - In un saggio del 1952 Alexander ipotizzava che la svalutazione della moneta avrebbe potuto portare ad una diminuzione dei consumi interni tramite la redistribuzione del reddito dai lavoratori con alta propensione marginale al consumo ai produttori con bassa propensione marginale al consumo. In questo studio includiamo quale determinante del consumo interno il tasso di cambio in aggiunta al reddito ed al tasso di interesse. Viene effettuata una stima su un campione di 50 paesi utilizzando dati time-series ed il metodo bound testing. Per la maggior parte dei paesi analizzati i risultati avvalorano la tesi di Alexander nel breve periodo ma non nel lungo periodo.

Exchange rate volatility and Domestic Consumption: a multicountry analysis

Since exchange rate volatility contributes to inflation volatility, we conjecture that it could have a direct effect on Domestic Consumption. We demonstrate our conjecture by specifying a Consumption function that includes a measure of exchange rate volatility, in addition to its usual determinants. The model is estimated for each of the 17 countries in the sample using the boundstesting approach to cointegration and error-correction modeling. The results reveal that in 12 of the countries, exchange rate volatility has short-run effects on Consumption. Long-run effects are observed in only 9 countries.

Fuzzy Subtractive Clustering Technique Applied to Demand Response in a Smart Grid Scope

Domestic Consumption is classified into profiles in order to favorable cover the adequate modeling. The fuzzy subtractive clustering technique is applied to a case study of Domestic Consumption demand response with three scenarios and a comparison of the results is presented. The demand response developed model intends to support consumer's decisions given a compromise between the Consumption imperative needs and possible economical benefits due to reshape and reschedule.

Quantification and genetic diversity of Hepatitis E virus in wild boar (Sus scrofa) hunted for Domestic Consumption in Central Italy.

The food-borne transmission of hepatitis E virus (HEV) is associated principally with products derived from the Domestic pig, the wild boar, and deer; however, few quantitative data are available on HEV loads in animals used in food production. This study assessed HEV occurrence, viral load and genetic variability in wild boar hunted for Domestic Consumption in the district of Viterbo (Central Italy) where high anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence values are reported in humans. A total of 332 liver and 69 intestine samples were obtained from wild boar hunted between 2011 and 2014. The liver tissue in 54 of the animals (16.3%) was HEV-positive. Viral loads in quantifiable liver samples (n = 29) ranged between 3.2 × 102 and 3.8 × 105 genome copies (g.c.)/g with a mean value of 1.85 × 104 g.c./g. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between viral concentration in liver and intestinal tissue, though mean viral load in the intestines was lower (3.13 × 103 g.c./g). Twenty-six samples were characterized molecularly as genotype 3 (G3) and four subtypes (a, c, f and l) were detected. Finally, twelve samples with near identical sequences were identified as G3 but could not be assigned to any of the known subtypes, and could therefore represent a potentially new subtype.

Domestic Consumption simulation and management using a continuous Consumption management and optimization algorithm

A continuous Consumption optimization algorithm has been improved in order to better manage the shifted demand. It has been done in a simulation and user-interaction tool capable of being integrated in a multiagent smart grid simulator already developed, and also capable of integrating several optimization algorithms to manage real and simulated loads. The case study of this paper enhances the advantages of the proposed algorithm and the benefits of using the developed simulation and user interaction tool.

CIASG - A learning algorithm and system approach to address exceptional events in Domestic Consumption management

This active participation can be achieved using decentralized decisions, in which the end consumer can manage loads regarding the Smart Grid needs. The management of loads must handle the users' preferences, wills and needs. However, the users' preferences, wills and needs can suffer changes when faced with exceptional events. This paper proposes the integration of exceptional events into the SCADA House Intelligent Management (SHIM) system developed by the authors, to handle machine learning issues in the Domestic Consumption context. An illustrative application and learning case study is provided in this paper.
