  • e business processes and e business process modelling a state of the art overview
International Journal of Services Technology and Management, 2009
    Co-Authors: Nuno Melão
    Abstract:

Although e-Business is increasingly seen as an essential approach to remain competitive in the globalised economy, many e-Business projects fail to attain the expected benefits. To help overcome this, the modelling of e-Business processes has been suggested but there is a surprising lack of research. This paper provides a state-of-the-art overview of the different approaches to model e-Business processes. It compares and assesses the suitability of methodologies, reference models, standards, techniques and tools for e-Business process modelling. A framework showing the relationships between the modelling approaches is proposed and avenues in the pursuit of better modelling approaches are identified. It is hoped that this research is beneficial to researchers and practitioners wishing to improve the effectiveness of modelling approaches.

  • An e-Business model ontology for modeling e-Business
15th Bled Electronic Commerce Conference, June 17-19, 2002
    Co-Authors: Alexander Osterwalder, Yves Pigneur
    Abstract:

After explaining why business executives and academics should consider thinking about a rigorous approach to e-Business models, we introduce a new e-Business Model Ontology. Using the concept of business models can help companies understand, communicate and share, change, measure, simulate and learn more about the different aspects of e-Business in their firm. The generic e-Business Model Ontology (a rigorous definition of the e-Business issues and their interdependencies in a company’s business model), which we outline in this paper is the foundation for the development of various useful tools for e-Business management and IS Requirements Engineering. The e-Business Model Ontology is based on an extensive literature review and describes the logic of a “business system” for creating value in the Internet era. It is composed of four main pillars, which are Product Innovation, Infrastructure Management, Customer Relationship and Financial Aspects. These elements are then further decomposed. 1.

  • Modeling e-Business with eBML
    Industrial Organization, 2002
Co-Authors: Alexander Osterwalder, Yves Pigneur, Sarra Ben Lagha
    Abstract:

\nIn this paper we demonstrate that modeling e-Business strategies is important in a time where the first e-Business disillusionment has taken place. The objective of this Paper is twofold. First we propose a theoretical e-Business model framework (eBMF) for aligning e-Business initiatives and projects. This framework rep-resents an ontology, which will allow firms to develop a sound e-Business model, in an environment that is amongst other things characterized by new forms of network organizations. Second we show why the eX-tensible Markup Language (XML) is an adequate technology for describing this theoretical framework in a formal way.

  • There’s no business like e-Business
Qualitative Market Research: An International Journal, 2002
    Co-Authors: Roger Palmer
    Abstract:

Seeks to address directly two assumptions that are inherent in current discussions concerning business and the role of technology. First, that business intelligence is, in fact, a feature of the business rather than the staff within that business. Businesses are simply entities with assets and capabilities but no cognitive processes, intelligence is a unique property of humans. Therefore there is a greater need to understand the social processes concerned in order to recognise this resource effectively. Second, that “e‐business” is distinct from “business”. Uses original research in the area of technological innovation as the basis for developing a wider argument with respect to e‐business. Argues that what is currently referred to as e‐business is a relatively poorly developed bundle of technologies that have yet to achieve full application in order to deliver optimum benefit. Also discusses the e‐business phenomenon, the role of technology and the importance of a social perspective of business to give more insightful understanding of the interactions between these areas.
