  • analytic Eclecticism in the study of world politics reconfiguring problems and mechanisms across research traditions
    Perspectives on Politics, 2010
    Co-Authors: Peter J Katzenstein
    Abstract:

This paper defines, operationalizes, and illustrates the value of analytic Eclecticism in the social sciences, with a focus on the fields of comparative politics and international relations. Analytic Eclecticism is not an alternative model of research or a means to displace or subsume existing modes of scholarship. It is an intellectual stance that supports efforts to complement, engage, and selectively utilize theoretical constructs embedded in contending research traditions to build complex arguments that bear on substantive problems of interest to both scholars and practitioners. Eclectic scholarship is marked by three general features. First, it is consistent with an ethos of pragmatism in seeking engagement with the world of policy and practice, downplaying unresolvable metaphysical divides and presumptions of incommensurability and encouraging a conception of inquiry marked by practical engagement, inclusive dialogue, and a spirit of fallibilism. Second, it formulates problems that are wider in scope than the more narrowly delimited problems posed by adherents of research traditions; as such, eclectic inquiry takes on problems that more closely approximate the messiness and complexity of concrete dilemmas facing “real world” actors. Third, in exploring these problems, eclectic approaches offer complex causal stories that extricate, translate, and selectively recombine analytic components - most notably, causal mechanisms - from explanatory theories, models, and narratives embedded in competing research traditions. The article includes a brief sampling of studies that illustrate the combinatorial potential of analytic Eclecticism as an intellectual exercise as well as its value in enhancing the possibilities of fruitful dialogue and pragmatic engagement within and beyond the academe.

  • the emperor s new clothes Eclecticism in autism treatment
Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2011
    Co-Authors: Karola Dillenburger
    Abstract:

Abstract Increasingly, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is internationally recognised as the scientific basis for teaching and treatment in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Yet, many governments and professionals across Europe promote an eclectic model as more child-centred and pragmatic. This paper addresses the issues of Eclecticism and ABA by exploring how misinformation stands in the way of evidence-based procedures that are truly unified, practical, and child-centred.

  • Bridging Technical Eclecticism and Theoretical Integration: Assimilative Integration
    Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, 2001
    Co-Authors: Georgios K. Lampropoulos
    Abstract:

Assimilative integration is a new type of psychotherapy integration introduced by Messer in 1992. This paper explains the “where, what, when, and how” of this integrative route, outlines its advantages and weaknesses, and discusses areas for potential assimilative practice in various models of therapy. Following a brief review of the current status of psychotherapy integration and its practices, assimilative integration is conceptualized as a “mini theoretical integration” and as “theoretical Eclecticism” it is offered as a bridge between theoretical integration and technical Eclecticism. Assimilative integration is proposed as the best theoretically and empirically based integrative approach available at this time, particularly for therapists who have been trained in a single mode of therapy before they became integrationists.

  • the methodology of philosophical practice Eclecticism and or integrativeness
    Philosophia, 2016
    Co-Authors: Aleksandar Fatic, Ivana Zagorac
    Abstract:

The need for philosophical practice to integrate various methods, both conceptual and those based on the use of emotions, raises the question as to whether its methodology is necessarily eclectic, in terms of the collection of various methodologies used in philosophy, or whether there is a way to move beyond Eclecticism. This is the main subject of this paper. In other words, the question is whether there is such a thing as an ‘integrative’ methodology and, if so, what distinguishes such a method from mere Eclecticism. In this text, we define the methodological procedure of integrativeness as the process of systematizing perspectives into an orientational answer to the demands of a specific problem. What differentiates such an approach from mere summation is a new contribution that results from a synergistic and systematic meeting of positions and argumentations whose final result differs from its initial elements. Diversity in the form of a multidimensional relationship towards life and the world results in numerous perspectives, which is a value that should be cultivated and integrated into a reflective and actional perception of the world.
