  • 100 articles every Ecologist should read
    Nature Ecology and Evolution, 2018
    Co-Authors: Franck Courchamp, Corey J A Bradshaw
    Abstract:

Reading scientific articles is a valuable and major part of the activity of scientists. Yet, with the upsurge of currently available articles and the increasing specialization of scientists, it becomes difficult to identify, let alone read, important papers covering topics not directly related to one’s own specific field of research, or that are older than a few years. Our objective was to propose a list of seminal papers deemed to be of major importance in ecology, thus providing a general ‘must-read’ list for any new Ecologist, regardless of particular topic or expertise. We generated a list of 544 papers proposed by 147 ecology experts (journal editorial members) and subsequently ranked via random-sample voting by 368 of 665 contacted ecology experts, covering 6 article types, 6 approaches and 17 fields. Most of the recommended papers were not published in the highest-ranking journals, nor did they have the highest number of mean annual citations. The articles proposed through the collective recommendation of several hundred experienced researchers probably do not represent an ‘ultimate’, invariant list, but they certainly contain many high-quality articles that are undoubtedly worth reading—regardless of the specific field of interest in ecology—to foster the understanding, knowledge and inspiration of early-career scientists.

  • Chapter 4 – Behavioral Ecology
Techniques in The Behavioral and Neural Sciences, 1991
    Co-Authors: Edmund Fantino
    Abstract:

Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of work investigating the roles of memory, perception, and species differences in foraging and the areas of behavioral ecology other than foraging. Behavioral ecology studies the organism's fitness as a function of the variables in its environment. Some of the areas addressed by behavioral Ecologists include foraging , territoriality, mate selection, kin recognition, weaning decisions, and thermoregulation. The area that has received by far the most attention from researchers with a behavior-analytic background is foraging. Behavioral Ecologists are attracted to behaviour–analytic methodology because this methodology promises to provide the Ecologists with sharper tools to test more precisely their predictions, especially about decisions of foragers. To better test some of their theoretical predictions, however, behavioral Ecologists have increasingly conducted laboratory simulations of the natural environment. Behavior analysts and behavioral Ecologists have participated in many interdisciplinary efforts. Many of the interactions between behavioral Ecologists and behavior analysts have concerned the economic and temporal factors that influence foraging.

  • Elaboración de un archivo de memoria del movimiento Ecologista a partir de los fondos de la Confederación Ecologistas en Acción
    Centro Universitário de Anápolis, 2019
Co-Authors: Canet, Adelina Codina, Casero, Elena Diaz, Riquelme, Eduardo Saiz
    Abstract:

The project consists in the creation of a digital archive of the Spanish Ecologist movement and of the environmental conflicts in which it has participated since its appearance in the 70s. In the Confederation of Ecologists in Action, in 1998, some 300 were unified groups in autonomous federations (except Galicia and the Balearic Islands). The project is an attempt to build bases for the development of an environmental history in our country, giving free access to the documentary collections, which some of the main protagonists retain. The project began in May 2017, among the achievements obtained is the dissemination of the project in different forums and articles. A digital platform has been created, and about 1.200 documents have been added. The study provides a study of the group movement of the Ecologist movement in Spain in the decades of the seventies, eighties and nineties.El proyecto consiste en la creación de un archivo digital del movimiento Ecologista español y de los conflictos ambientales en los que ha participado desde su aparición en la década de los años 70.
