The Journal of Higher Education, 2007Co-Authors: Zhang GuoqiangAbstract:Having analyzed 18 works on Educational Sociology(textbooks with general introduction),we discover that the research on Educational Sociology in mainland,China had the following features: on the research paradigm,functionalism has dominated;in the research train of thought,focus on the relationship between education and the society;in the objective of research,stress the construction of "system": in the research method,emphasize "qualitative".The research trends in Educational Sociology in mainland China are: from the system awareness to problem awareness,from binary to multiple values; from value neutrality to critical participation;from only paying attention to academic mission to laying equal stress on academic and social missions.

Research Paradigms and Model Structuring of Educational Sociology
Chinese Education and Society, 2002Co-Authors: M. A. HeminAbstract:Whether Educational Sociology has an independent research methodology is, in itself, a moot point. The writer maintains that this is not of the greatest importance. What is important is whether Educational Sociology as a discipline has its own research paradigm. The development of a disciplinary paradigm is an important mark of the maturity of a discipline, whereas the formation of that paradigm is, in turn, dependent on the structure of the research model. Thus, this article clarifies the three categories of paradigms of Educational Sociology, to wit: the positivist paradigm and humanist paradigm; the Educational reality paradigm, the Educational definitions paradigm, and the Educational action paradigm; and functionalism conflict theory, and the interaction paradigm. This article also discusses ways to structure the two models of Educational Sociology: the analogy method (lei bi fa) and the hypothesis method (jia she fa) and their effects on paradigms.

Teachers' Emotions and Teaching: A Review of the Literature and Directions for Future Research

First, a multicomponential perspective on emotions is described, then the existing literature on teachers' positive and negative emotions is reviewed and critiqued. Next is a summary of the literature suggesting that teachers' emotions influence teachers' and students' cognitions, motivation, and behaviors. Four areas for future research are proposed: management and discipline, adoption and use of teaching strategies, learning to teach, and teachers' motivation. An overview of research methods used in a multicomponential perspective on emotions is provided. This review draws on a variety of research literatures: Educational psychology, social and personality psychology, Educational Sociology, and research on teachers and teaching.
