Isospora brasilsatoae n. sp. has oocysts that are ovoidal to pyriform, 26.8 × 21.1 μm, with smooth, bilayered wall, ~1.6 μm thick. Micropyle present. Oocyst residuum absent, but one to three polar granules are present. Sporocysts are elongate ovoidal, 18.1 × 10.5 μm. Stieda body knob-like and sub-Stieda body trapezoidal. Sporocyst residuum is composed of granules that appear to be membrane-bounded. Sporozoites are vermiform with refractile bodies and striations. This is the ninth description of an Isospora sp. parasitizing a New World thrush.

Oocysts of Isospora dromaii n. sp. are subspheroidal to ovoid in shape, measure 21.6 × 19.8 μm, and have a double and smooth wall thickness of approximately 1.4 μm. In this species, micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granules are absent. The sporocysts are slightly ovoid in shape and measure 13.7 × 10.0 μm. Nipple-like Stieda body and prominent sub-Stieda body are present. The sporocyst residuum is composed of small dispersed granules of varying sizes. The sporozoites are characterized by an oblong refractile body and one centrally located nucleus. This is the first description of isosporid coccidia infecting birds of the family Dromaiidae.

Its oöcysts are subspheroidal to ellipsoidal, 24.4 × 22.2 μm, with smooth, bilayered wall, ~1.2 μm. The micropyle and the oöcyst residuum are absent, but a polar granule is present. The sporocysts are lemon-shaped, 17.6 × 10.6 μm. The Stieda body is nipple-like, and substieda body is prominent and homogeneous. The sporocyst residuum is composed of scattered granules. The sporozoite has anterior and posterior refractile bodies and a nucleus. The report of this coccidium recovered from exotic canaries in South America is relevant to native passerines, mainly to Carduelis yarrellii , which are listed as vulnerable species by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).

E-mail: bertobp@ufrrj.br The birds of the Thraupidae family, similar to other passerine birds can be infected by coccidia, and the genus Isospora can be considered the most relevant. Isospora thraupis, I. andesensis, I. irisidornisi, I. tiesangui, I. marambaiensis, I. sepetibensis, I. cadimi, I. navarroi, I. ramphoceli, I. sanhaci, I. sayacae and I. silvasouzai were described from thraupids of South American and considering that these birds are sympatric hosts of other birds that inhabit South, North and Central Americas, it is concluded that these parasites should be widely dispersed in the America Continent. In this sense, this paper proposes to provide scientific background and a dichotomous key to assist in the identification of sporulated oocysts of the genus Isospora from passerine birds of the Thraupidae family.

Sporocysts are broadly ellipsoidal, 15.9 × 8.5 µm, with Stieda and substieda bodies. Sporocyst residuum is scattered composed of hundreds of small granules. Sporozoites are elongate and slightly curved, each with two refractile bodies. The nuclei of the sporozoites were not well discernible. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria columbapalumbi sp. n. are ellipsoidal 24–17 × 18–15 µm. Micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. Sporocysts are broadly ellipsoidal, 11–16 × 6–7µm, with Stieda body. Substiedal body is absent. Sporocyst residuum is scattered, composed of hundreds of small granules. Sporozoites are elongate and slightly curved, each with two refractile bodies. There are two irregularly shaped polar granules present in the oocyst. The endogenous development takes place within the enterocytes of jejunum.

Sporulated oocysts of Isospora annthomassonae n. sp. are subspherical to slightly ellipsoidal 32.0 ± 1.5 × 29.4 ± 1.3 (30–35 × 27–31) µm. Micropyle, oocyst residuum and polar granule are absent. Sporocysts are broadly ellipsoidal, 24.6 ± 1.4 × 12.9 ± 0.7 (22–28 × 12–14) µm, with Stieda and substiedal bodies. Sporocyst residuum is broadly ellipsoidal, 11.3 ± 0.8 × 9.5 ± 0.7 (9–13 × 8–11) µm, composed of hundreds of small granules. Eimeria fragilis sp. n., described from Chiromantis petersii, has ellipsoidal oocysts, 18.5 (17-19.5) × 15.2 (14.5-16) µm; lacking micropyle, oocyst residuum and polar granule. Sporocysts are dizoic, navicular, 10.6 (9.5-12) × 6.8 (6-7) µm. Oocysts of Eimeria wambaensis sp. n. found in Hyperolius viridiflavus are ellipsoidal to ovoidal, 17.0 (15.0-18.5) × 13.0 (11.0-14.0) µm; without micropyle, oocyst residuum and polar granule. Sporocysts are dizoic, navicular, 8.7 (8.0-10.5) × 6.0 (5.5-7.0) µm. Described species are the first Eimeria reported from African anurans.
