Design and implementation of Electrical-Supply-free VLSI circuits
IEE Proceedings - Circuits Devices and Systems, 2005Co-Authors: Chunyan Wang, F. DevosAbstract:The authors propose an approach to the design and implementation of VLSI circuits free of Electrical Supply and power rails. With this approach, the circuits can be made to use the power carried by the incident light for Supply, control and optical charge pumping. The proposed basic cell consists of an NMOS transistor and a photodiode connected between the drain of the transistor and the ground. The circuits can be fabricated in a standard CMOS technology without additional processing. A test circuit involving basic gates and a pulse generator has been designed and fabricated in a 0.18 /spl mu/m process and successfully tested.

Southwest Symposium on Mixed-Signal Design 2003., 1Co-Authors: Chunyan Wang, F. DevosAbstract:In this paper, we propose an approach of the design and implementation of VLSI circuits free of Electrical Supply and power rails. With this approach, the circuits can be made to use the power carried by incident light for Supply, control, and optical charge pumping. They are based on using photodiodes for power conversion. The circuits can be fabricated in a standard CMOS technology without additional processes. ISGT - Growing the business without increasing the Electrical Supply capacity: A smart microgrid approach
2012 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT), 2012Co-Authors: Jj Van Der Merwe, Lj GroblerAbstract:A typical scenario is presented where business entities wish to expand their operation and in doing so require a larger Electrical Supply capacity (supplied peak-demand). If the increase required exceeds the savings that an energy efficiency initiative can achieve, the business is left with no other alternative than to request an increase in the Electrical Supply capacity. This paper investigates the possibility of managing that business by introducing a smart microgrid (SMG) to achieve the savings necessary to remain at the current Supply capacity and to gain maximum benefit from their assets. The options and opportunities available to the business given their needs are presented, as well as to Supply possible means for overcoming the barriers using a smart microgrid approach.

Electrical Supply SYSTEM -- ANALYSIS AND IMPLEMENTATION
1991Co-Authors: T J Hammons, L ChanalAbstract:The paper reviews phenomena that affects performance of transducers that measure torque at positions along a turbine-generator shaft, and then describes the design of a transducer for precise measurement of torque at positions on a steam turbine-generator shaft that results from severe disturbances on the Electrical Supply system. Torque at shaft couplings following severe Supply system events predicted using continuum models of turbine-generator shafts is analysed and compared with that obtained over a section of the shaft by shaft twist and overall stiffness of the section. Algorithms for processing torque deduced from twist over a section of shaft to estimate true torque at specifk shaft locations are discussed. Studies are performed for severe L-L-L short circuits with clearance. Instantaneous twist between sections of shaft where it is possible to secure discs and the stiffness between dixs is used to give average transient torque across the shaft section. Instantaneous twist is measured using the time interval between pulses when slits on rotating discs pass transducers. Transient shaft torque as a semi-continuous quantity is thereby determined. Transient torque over a section of shaft is processed by modal analysis to correct for variation of modal displacement and modal torque across a section of shaft where the torque is measured to give true torque at specific shaft positions. The paper goes on to describe the design of a transient shaft torque transducer which use?, discs, with slits, which are secured to the rotating shaft. The time interval between pulses obtained when slits pass transducers are measured and compared with the time intervals which correspond to zero torque so as to calibrate the measurements. Th? measurements are converted to mean transient shaft torque over sections of the shaft as a semi-continuous quantity for modal processing to give true transient torque at specified positions on the shaft such as couplings. The paper then compares transient torque at various shaft couplings obtained by detailed computer simulation with $fecise transient torque predicted by processing torque over sections of shaft which is obtained from slitted disc transducer measurements. A 660 MW and a 1000 MW two-ble machine is analysed.
