    Abstract:

    Introduction It is well known that electrical accidents can cause physical injury. Less well known is that long-term consequences may include emotional and cognitive problems. The objective was to explore Electricians’ experiences and perceptions of work-related electrical accidents, with focus on psychological short- and long-term consequences, including how contacts with health care services and the workplace had been perceived. Methods Semi-structured interviews with 23 Swedish male Electricians, aged 25–68, who had experienced at least one electrical accident and who had reported residual sensory, muscular, or mental symptoms. Data was analysed by means of qualitative content analysis, with the analysis keeping close to the areas of query and the Electricians’ statements. Result Immediate emotional reactions included surprise, confusion, fear, anxiety, and anger, but also long-term consequences in terms of psychological dysfunction were seen. Experiencing a no-let-go situation was particularly stressful. The cause of the accident, and questions about guilt and blame, were central in the aftermath. Lack of knowledge and routine among health care professionals concerning electrical injury was reported, as well as lack of medical and psychological follow-up. Discussion Long-term psychological consequences can be seen after occupational electrical accidents. Adequate handling at the workplace and from the health care services, including follow-up, could facilitate rehabilitation and return-to-work.

    PurposeProfessional Electricians are highly subjected to electrical injuries. Previous studies describing symptoms after electrical injury have not included people with less severe initial injuries. The purpose of the present study was to describe symptoms at different time points after electrical injury, the impact of “no-let-go” phenomenon and different electrical potential [high voltage (HV) vs. low voltage (LV)], and the safety culture at the workplace.MethodsA retrospective survey was conducted with 523 Swedish Electricians. Two questionnaires were issued: the first to identify Electricians who had experienced electrical injury and the second to gain information about symptoms and safety culture. Self-reported symptoms were described at different time points following injury. Symptoms for HV and LV accidents were compared. Occurrence or nonoccurrence of “no-let-go” phenomenon was analysed using two-tailed Chi-2. Safety culture was assessed with a validated questionnaire.ResultsNearly all reported having symptoms directly after the injury, mainly paraesthesia and pain. For the first weeks after injury, pain and muscle weakness dominated. The most frequently occurring symptoms at follow-up were pain, muscle weakness and loss of sensation. HV injuries and “no-let go” phenomenon were associated with more sustained symptoms. Deficiencies in the reporting routines were present, as well as shortage of preventive measures.ConclusionThe results indicate that symptoms are reported also long time after an electrical injury and that special attention should be paid to HV injuries and “no-let go” accidents. The workplace routines to reduce the number of work-related electrical injuries for Swedish Electricians can be improved.

    Abstract:

    Accidents and injuries caused by electricity are work environment risks for Electricians. About a 100 cases are reported annually to the Swedish Work Environment Authority. The safety culture at the Electricians’ workplaces can affect the successfulness of safety management and the prevention of injuries. This paper presents preliminary questionnaire and interview findings on the perceived workplace safety culture of 523 male Electricians who have experienced an electrical injury or accident. The results show a general need for increased safety awareness and motivation for safe work performance on different organisational levels. They also show a need for increased visibility of the management at the workplaces, increased commitment to safety, improved communication with the staff, and the need for increased reporting of incidents and experience feedback in order to achieve well-functioning learning for safety. The preliminary findings offer us a better understanding of the driving forces and barriers to efficient safety management and to safety culture improvements in this industry sector. (Less)

    Jarvholm and Stenberg1 evaluated suicide mortality rates among Electricians (“exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs)”) and glass and wood workers (“unexposed to EMFs”) in the Swedish construction industry. Standard mortality rates were lower for the two job groups compared to the Swedish general population. This is likely to be due to the healthy worker effect. The internal cohort analysis showed that Electricians had a lower suicide mortality rate than glass and wood workers. As the authors rightfully point out, these results should not be seen as evidence against the association between exposure to EMFs and suicide, in particular because no quantitative estimates of exposure were obtained to directly evaluate this association. …

    Methods: This is a cohort study. Electricians were identified through a computerised register of construction workers who had participated in health examinations in 1971–92. In this register, 33 719 male Electricians were identified together with a reference group consisting of 72 653 male glass or woodworkers. Through a linkage with the Swedish Death Register, the cause of death was identified to the end of 1997. Mortality as a result of suicide was also compared with the general population with adjustments for sex, age, and period. Results: The risk of mortality from suicide was decreased for Electricians (standardised mortality ratio (SMR) 0.58, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.47 to 0.71) and for the reference group of construction workers (SMR 0.81, 95% CI 0.72 to 0.91) compared with the general population. Conclusion: Contrary to some other studies, risk of suicide was not increased among Electricians in the construction industry.

    Background: Several studies indicate that truck drivers have an increased risk of lung cancer, but few studies have examined lung cancer risk in heavy equipment operators. Workers in both occupations are exposed to diesel exhaust. Aims: To examine the incidence and mortality from lung cancer among truck drivers and among drivers of heavy vehicles. Methods: A computerised register of Swedish construction workers participating in health examinations between 1971 and 1992 was used. Male truck drivers (n = 6364) and drivers of heavy construction vehicles (n = 14 364) were selected as index groups; carpenters/Electricians constituted the reference group (n = 119 984). Results: Operators of heavy construction equipment experienced no increased risk of lung cancer compared to risk among the carpenter/electrician referents (61 cases v 70.1 expected). However, a significant inverse trend risk with increasing use of cabins was apparent. Truck drivers had increased risks of cancer of the lung (61 cases v 47.3 expected) and prostate (124 cases v 99.7 expected), although only mortality for lung cancer was significantly increased. Comparisons with the general population showed similar results. Conclusion: Results are consistent with those of previous studies suggesting that heavy equipment operators with potential exposure to diesel exhaust may have little or no increased risk of lung cancer, although the use of cabins seemed to decrease the risk of lung cancer. The results for truck drivers are also consistent with previous reports of increased lung cancer risk among truck drivers exposed to diesel exhaust, as well as recent reports linking diesel exhaust exposure to prostate cancer.
