    Abstract:

    This paper presents the current research trends and future issues for Industrial Electronics related to transportation electrification. Specific emphasis is placed on electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (EVs/PHEVs) and their critical drivetrain components. The paper deals with industry related EV energy storage system issues, EV charging issues, as well as power Electronics and traction motor drives issues. The importance of battery cell voltage equalization for series-connected lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for extended life time is presented. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of EV/PHEV battery charger classification, standards, and requirements is presented. Several conventional EV/PHEV front-end ac/dc charger converter topologies as well as isolated DC/DC topologies are reviewed. Finally, this paper reviews various EV propulsion system architectures and efficient bidirectional DC/DC converter topologies. Novel DC/AC inverter modulation techniques for EVs are also presented. The architectures are based on the battery voltage, capacity, and driving range.

    Abstract:

    Competitive pressures to produce more while spending less are pushing Industrial Electronics and factory automation to the forefront of technological change. A few important trends and challenges are noticeable. Robot applications are starting to penetrate such nontraditional areas as the service and entertainment industries. Advances in such fields as adaptive control are opening up new possibilities and markets in process control. Semiconductor-based gas sensors, now under development, are expected to help manufacturers both raise product quality and lower environmental pollution. Another growth area is the control of buildings and other structures against excessive vibrations-not only to improve comfort but even to prevent earthquake damage. The drive toward open-architecture controllers in manufacturing is gaining momentum. Meanwhile, neural networks have begun to capture the essence of intelligent decision-making. The challenges abound, however. In power Electronics the need to improve efficiency, while keeping down cost and electromagnetic interference and other forms of environmental pollution, is forcing experts to give a high priority to such activities as improved packaging and increased integration.

    A rapprochement among different vendors of Industrial control equipment may be at hand if several systems presented as "open architecture" ones are any indication. Meanwhile, the advent of single-chip microcontrollers for motor drives, more powerful insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), and improved integration of sensors with power devices are salient advances on the factory floor. The new crop of Industrial computers, including single-board types embedded in larger systems, emphasizes increased power often in a smaller package. As for signal processing, gains include a system for surveillance (in the plant and on the battlefield) that fuses data from two sources into one stream of enhanced precision, while digital signal processing pushes a PC-based vision system to some 10/sup 11/ operations per second.

    Energy savings and higher intelligence are hallmarks of today's highly competitive world of Industrial automation. While power Electronics devices and systems deliver ever more watts, they also contribute to electromagnetic interference (EMI), and users are becoming aware of the need to increase their overall system reliability. Teetering on the verge of acceptance are easily programmable service robots, automatically cleaning their way around public facilities. At the same time, researchers are exploring the possibility of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology on the factory floor. Both the water content of products and their material hardness are being analyzed by MRI scans to monitor product quality. For embedded systems designers, who have the complex task of testing and debugging embedded processors, relief is in the offing with a new, global standard. The standard, for a device interface for embedded processors, should simplify the testing and debugging of the processors used in such fields as automotive Electronics, aerospace, telecommunications, appliances, and consumer Electronics. Simplifying those tasks ought to shorten the time to market of products and systems in most, if not all, of these areas.

    The computerisation and networking of the factory spread farther and deeper in 1994, as did the use of power semiconductors. Calls for greater architectural commonality came from users of control systems, among others. At the interface with the assembly line, vision systems are growing more powerful. A crucial development in Industrial computers is the shift to the architecture of the peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus. This high-performance 32and 64-bit local bus should unjam the flow of data between a system's processor and such wide-bandwidth peripherals as graphics display and video units, small computer systems interface (SCSI) drive controllers, and local area networks. The author discusses these trends and developments.

    Notable advances during 1992 are reviewed. They include improved precision in computerized numerical control (CNC) for machine tools; easier, high-level programming for programmable logic controllers; faster and more efficient machine vision; reduced false accept and reject ratios in X-ray laminography for the examination of solder joints, particularly in surface-mounted boards; and high-wattage power electronic devices. The latter offer lower voltage drop when turned on, plus the ability to control motors and other manufacturing equipment with a virtually unity power factor on utility lines. >

    Tertiary education increasingly relies on publications. Arguably, Ph.D. work is also increasingly produced within larger teams or with more extensive collaborations. As way to obtain an objective measure of this trend, this manuscript examines authorship trends in IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IEEE-IES) publications for the 50-year period from 1963 to 2012. We emphasize the trends related to the number of authors and pages per publication. In order to identify several bibliometric indicators, we have analyzed 34,409 entries from IEEE- Xplore digital library for IEEE- IES publications. We provide results for two different sets of publications. Firstly, we present evidence that the number of authors and the number of pages of articles in the IEEE Transactions in Industrial Electronics (TIE) for the 50-year period are increasing per decade an average of +0.42 authors and +0.87 pages, respectively. Secondly, we provide evidence that the number of authors per article in 14 publication venues for the 25-year period from 1988 to 2012 are increasing per decade an average of +0.375 authors.

    Abstract:

    Technology development creates many challenges in the education of Industrial-Electronics (IE)-related subjects. At the same time, it allows new educational paradigms to be implemented. The main contribution of this paper is to initiate a discussion for the needs and challenges of IE education both at university level and in lifelong learning, in order to meet the requirements of the emerging technologies of the 21st century. Educational challenges and opportunities are first identified and analyzed. Afterward, an overview of state-of-the-art learning methodologies and tools is presented. New educational paradigms and future directions are also identified.
