    The Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia has been mounting SGML full-Text databases on-line since 1992, and actively building a user community around this Internet resource. Conceiving of what we do as firmly a library operation, we have sought to integrate the Electronic Text databases into the training, cataloging, preservation, and collection development areas of our library. Central to our selection criteria is the desire for software- and platform-independent Texts- if it's not SGML, it's ephermeral- and central to our cataloging endeavors is on SGML bibliographic record such as the Text Encoding Initiative header.

  • "A library and apparatus of every kind": The Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia

    Abstract:

    The Electronic Text Center at the Univesity of Virginia combines an online archive of thousands of SGML-encoded Electronic Texts, all available through a single piece of search software, with a library-based center housing hardware and software suitable for the creation and analysis of Text. Throuigh ongoing training sessions and support of individual teaching and research projects, the Center is building a diverse and expanding user community locally, and providing a potential model for similar enterprises at other institutions. In August 1992, after almost a year of planning, the University of Virginia (UVa) Library opened its Electronic Text Center and online collection of full-Text databases. Since then it has established itself locally as a catalyst for the development of an increaisngly sophisticated user community, and nationally as a model for the large-scale implementation of online Texts in higher education. Underlying Principles Virginia's Electronic Text enterprise is founded on serveal underlying assumptions and expectations, which the first eighteen months of operation have tested and strenghtened. Principal among these are the notions that--whenever technically and legally possible--the Electronic Texts should be remotely accessible, encoded in a uniform, nonproprietary manner, and all online data should be delivered up through a single piece of search-and-display software. As have other libraries, the University of Virginia has seen the negative side of growing collection of e-Texts on CD-ROMs: they are difficult to network on a campuswide scale, they are discrete items that cannot be intermingled in a large data set, and they typically come with their own search tools. The prospect of having to teach and support dozens of search packages, all doing much the same thing, was not a welcome thought. By buying the data on disk or tape and loading it into an online system that is under local control (and can therefore be tailored somewhat to local needs), the Center has largely avoided the logistical nightmare of working with Electronic "books", each of which has its own access methods. Moreover, it was an assumption from the beginning that simply providing e-Texts and related technologies was not enough: they had to be offered up in a manner appropriate to users whose needs are often sophisticated but whose technical expereince is often limited, as is their sense of the possibilities of computer-aided Textual study. Therefore, these new pedagogical and research services had to be introduced and nurtured through ongoing training sesssions, orientations, demonstrations, and online help. The Center actively recruits new student and faculty users when there are holdings in their areas of study, and intorductory sessions are tailored to a particular course or seminar, focusing on, say, just the eighteenth-and nineteenth-century philosophy holdings or just the Middle English poetry and prose. The Center The Electronic Text Center is open and staffed most of the time that the library is open and provides a place where users can be introduced to the new services, where existing users can get regular help, where offline Electronic Texts and available, and where scanners and Text-analysis software can be used. Having a walk-in centers is central to the ability to provide Electronic Text technologies to university partons: it is certainly possible to have an online Text archive without a supporting center, or a library-based center with no online component, but the impact of these two items together not only has proven to be much greater than either one in isolation, but may be the only practical way to create a broad-based user community that sustains the growth of the service. The Electronic Text Center, therefore, is both a work space for the coordinator and a staff of graduate students, and a place for usres to learn how to create e-Texts, to operate a range of related Text-analysis software, and to access those e-Texts not availble onlline, including the following: the works of Immanuel Kant; the Global Jewish Database; the ICAME langauge corpora; Perseus (a collection of Greek Texts and images); CETEDOC, a database of Latin theological works; and a hyperText edition of the works of Thomas Aquinas. …

    As part of an on‐going commitment to the use of computers in education and research, the University of Virginia (UVa) Library has established an Electronic Text Center and an online collection of machine‐readable Texts. Open since September 1992, the Center collects and prepares Texts for inclusion into our online Text service, makes available hardware and software that permits the computerized analysis of Text, and provides guidance and training for these new scholarly tools.

    In this research, a new displaying and controlling method for three dimensional Electronic Texts using augmented reality via Leap Motion that is a very small and reasonable hand motion sensor is proposed. Recently, Electronic Texts in two dimensions have been popularized because of developed tablets with high quality display, easy storing and retrieving through the Internet better than paper media. However, it is difficult to understand contents written in separated pages, to feel physical thickness, to tie plural pages simultaneously, and to transform paper shapes or viewing angles. To cope with these difficulties, Electronic Texts become 3D model on web browsers and can be controlled in 3D via hand motions using a contact-less sensor in this research. As a result, operational feeling such as real paper media can be realized on PC. Our prototype system that can display 3D Electronic Texts and can be controlled via hand motions is presented.

    This paper describes a new additional function for enhanced viewing of Electronic Text by using the “Magnifying And Simplifying System for Text EXTension (MaSSText)” that we had already proposed. The MaSSText has the operational feeling like a map system displayed on a web browser. No link buttons are used for changing to other pages in this system because it is created by using Ajax. So, it allows us to display long Text files in only a window with seamlessly expansion/reduction and display/not-display from index to body or annotation data. Using this system, footnotes, references, tables and figures on a document can be located at optimal positions. However, there is a problem that two distant paragraphs cannot be placed side by side for comparing them. To cope with the difficulty, a new function “Wheel Action for Reeling Paragraphs (WaRP)” is added in the MaSSText. Using the WaRP, reading users can set a fixed paragraph and can reel other distant paragraphs located at the upper or lower part of the fixed paragraph. As a result, two distant paragraphs can be placed side by side easily. Simulation software the MaSSText with the WaRP and the effectiveness of our research are shown.

This system for displaying Text has the operational feeling like a map system displayed on a web browser. Then, it allows us to display huge Text files in only one window or seamlessly display/not-display from index to body or annotation data. Grasping a Text with both a bird's-eye view in its totality and a detailed view can be easy.     Abstract:

    Describes the whole field of accessible Text formats for reading-impaired persons. A broad overview of existing code systems ranging from ill-defined basic ASCII up to 16- and 32-bit multilingual character sets (ISO and Unicode versions) are given, as well as details on the standardized ISO formats for structured documents (SGML and ODA). In order to underline the importance of Electronic Text standardization, a few current systems, both diskette and Electronic mail implementations, are reviewed. Within this framework, the authors situate the activities of the ICADD committee, an international body that promotes the accessibility of Text information through the use of global standards for structured Texts. In Europe, the TIDE-CAPS project is mainly concerned with document access for the print-disabled. An SGML DTD for newspapers, called CAPSNEWS, has been developed; this DTD describes a fully general newspaper structure. This DTD also has some special provisions for visually impaired persons, which enables them to navigate through digital newspapers by means of large print on screen, voice synthesis, and Braille display readers. The benefits of structured document formats, both for the print-disabled and for publishers, are stressed throughout a new European Horizontal Action TIDE Program, HARMONY, which started in Autumn 1994. >

    Abstract:

    This thesis examines the human issues underlying the design and usability of Electronic Text systems. In so doing it develops a framework for the conceptualisation of these issues that aims to guide designers of Electronic Texts in their attempts to produce usable systems. The thesis commences with a review of the traditional human factors literature on Electronic Text according to three basic themes: its concern with perceptual, manipulatory and structural issues. From this examination it is concluded that shortcomings in translating this work into design result from the adoption of overly narrow uni-disciplinary views of reading taken from cognitive psychology and information science which are inappropriate to serve the needs of Electronic Text designers. In an attempt to provide a more relevant description of the reading process a series of studies examining readers and their views as well as uses of Texts is reported. In the first, a repertory grid based investigation revealed that all Texts can be described in reader-relvant terms according to three criteria: why a Text is read, what a Text contains and how it is read. These criteria then form the basis of two investigations of reader-Text interaction using academic journals and user manuals. The results of these studies highlighted the need to consider readers' models of a document's structure in discussing Text usability. Subsequent experimental work on readers' models of academic articles demonstrated not only that such models are important aspects of reader-Text interaction but that data of this form could usefully be employed in the design of an Electronic Text system. The proposed framework provides a broad, qualitative model of the important issues for designers to consider when developing a product It consists of four interactive elements that focus attention on aspects of reading that have been identified as central to usability. Simple tests of the utility and validity of the framework are reported and it is shown that the framework both supports reasoned analysis and subsequent prediction of reader behaviour as well as providing a parsimonious account of their verbal utterances while reading. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the likely uses of such a framework and the potential for Electronic Text systems in an increasingly information-hungry world.
