    Abstract:

    A key issue in the management of information system inthe 1980s is the growing sophistication of specialized information systems within the traditional functional areas of the organization. The human resource information systems (HRIS) is one such system which in recent years has become critical to the operat ion of the personnel departments of the companies. Information systems in personnel have evolved from the automated Employee Record keeping in the 1960s into complex reporting and decision systems today. The HRIS is designed to support the planning, administration, decision-making and control of human resources management. The purpose of the article is to present the status of HRIS, to trace its development as an entity independent of the centralized MIS, to assess its current operation and technological ba se and to project its future role in the firm, especially its relationship to human resource department.

    Abstract:

    Experts working in HR space need to do many times consuming tasks related to Employee management. With technological revolution and developing needs of HR it was understood that with the assistance of PCs and innovation, many valuable man hours of HR experts can be spared and used for strategic and progressively vital errands. The purpose of this study is to collect information regarding perceived performance and benefits of computer-based human resource information system (HRIS). This study has proposed and verified a comprehensive model of success of computer-based HRIS. The model comprises of five elements namely perceived performance of HRIS Employee leave management, Employee Record management, performance and reward management, corporate communication and HRIS satisfaction. The research was carried out to understand and uncover the perceived performance of all five elements of HRIS and their relation with HRIS satisfaction by HR professionals. The results revealed that perceived performance of HRIS Employee leave management, Employee Record management, performance and reward management are positively associated with HRIS satisfaction while HRIS corporate communication was found to have no positive association with HRIS satisfaction. This study can be further extended to develop success models of HRIS by including other stakeholders.

  • Applications of HRIS in Human Resource Management in India: A Study

    Abstract:

    This study intends to assess the applications of HRIS in human resource management (HRM) in companies operating in India. Primary data based on 544 respondents and 18 applications of HRIS in HRM were analyzed. Five factors from factor analysis were further analyzed. Respondents perceived “technical and strategic HRM” and “performance and reward management” as the most important factors for HRIS applications. The most frequent application of HRIS in organizations operating in India was found to be in “Employee Record”, followed by “pay roll”.  Sophisticated HRIS applications i.e. “technical and strategic HRM”, “performance and reward management” and “corporate communication” were also applied in organizations in India.  ANOVA results showed that manufacturing and service companies differed significantly on all sophisticated HRIS applications. Mean scores showed that on all the sophisticated HRIS applications, service companies had significant edge over the manufacturing companies. However Indian and multinational companies did not differ significantly on any of the HRIS applications.     To process the data contained in a staff-file in a manual system, the clerk has to: 1. note which filing cabinet drawer contains the file; 2. check the file-name label; 3. note how the file is organised; 4. set aside desk-space for looking at and processing each Employee Record card; 5. open the drawer; 6. read each Employee’s card Employee and deal with the information; and finally 7. close the drawer.
