Indeed, little is known about this coccidium. We have studied its Endogenous Development in domestic rabbits by means of light and electron microscopy. The first meronts appeared 72h post-inoculation (h.p.i.), but a total of four asexual generations developed from 72 to 144h.p.i. Meronts and gamonts were localized in the small intestine and the asexual stages successively moved from the duodenum to ileum. All parasite stages were found exclusively in the epithelium of the walls and tops of the villi. Two types of meronts developing in parallel during the asexual phase were observed from at least the 2nd generation. As in other rabbit coccidia, these forms corresponded to type A, which usually develops two polynucleate merozoites where endomerogony occurs, and type B, characterized by more numerous uninucleate merozoites arising by ectomerogony. This report is the first description of the Endogenous stages of E. exigua.

Parasitology research, 2002Co-Authors: Michal PakandlAbstract:An electron microscopic study of the Endogenous Development of Eimeria mulardi Chauve, Reynaud and Gounel, 1994 was carried out in mule ducks which are hybrids of the domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and the muscovy duck (Cairina moschata). All of the Endogenous stages were seen within the nucleus of the host cell. Merozoites arose from ectomerogony and three mutually similar merogonies were noted. The asexual stages were found in leukocyte-like cells in the lamina propria of the jejunum, ileum and caecum, while the gamonts developed in glandular epithelial cells in the same part of the intestine.

Eimeria media Kessel 1929 : comparative study of Endogenous Development between precocious and parental strains

CoudertAbstract:Endogenous Development of a pure strain of Eimeria media and of a precocious line derived from this strain was studied in specific pathogen-free (SPF) rabbits. Endogenous Development of the parental strain comprised three generations and the gamogony began 76 h post-inoculation (pi). Two types of meronts were observed in each generation. The type A meronts gave rise to large, polynucleated merozoites present in low numbers. Multiplication was carried out by endomerogony. Within type B meronts, merozoites arose from ectomerogony. These were slender and more numerous than those of type A. The sporozoite refractile body was divided and distributed into the first and second generation merozoites but not into the third. The Endogenous Development of the precocious line was similar to that of the parental strain except that no refractile body was observed and the last merogony was absent. Gamogony appeared 60 h pi.

Isospora carliae sp. n. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the skink Carlia rhomboidalis (Peters) from Daintree Forest, North Queensland, Australia: description and fine-structural account of Endogenous Development.

PapernaAbstract:Isospora carliae sp. n. is described from the blue-throated rainbow skink Carlia rhomboidalis (Peters), from Daintree Forest, North Queensland, Australia. Oocysts are ellipsoidal, 16.8-21.0 x 12.6-15.4 microm in size, with their two sporocysts, 9.0-14.0 x 7.0-9.24 microm in size, positioned along the wide axis. Sporozoites contain a distinct refractile body and are accompanied by a residuum. All Endogenous Development occurs within the host-cell nucleus. Nuclei are sometimes invaded by several merozoites, but only infections by a single parasite persist. Nuclei lodging meronts, mature microgamonts and premature macrogamonts have an elongate shape. Some meronts exhibit a membrane-bound cytoplasmic inclusion that contains many micronemes.

PapernaAbstract:Eimeria jamescooki sp. n. was recovered from the skink Cryptoblepharus virgatus (Garman) found on the grounds of James Cook University, Townsville (type locality), North Queensland, Australia. Oocysts were 17.5-25.0 (22.1 ± 1.9) × 15-22.5 (17.7 ± 1.6) µm and sporocysts 6.25-10.0 (7.9 ± 1.15) × 3.75-6.25 (5.3 ± 1.0) µm in size. Endogenous stages are described from histological material examined by light microscope and by transmission electron microscope. Both merogony stages and gamonts were found to develop in the cytoplasm of the anterior gut mucosal epithelium. Meront progeny were comprised of 10 to 21 merozoites. Premature macrogamonts were elongate; some host cells contained two elongate macrogamonts. Unique to the presently described species were the Golgi "plaques" and an enclosure of tubuli. Mature macrogamonts and young oocysts ranged in size from 14 × 7 to 21 × 11 µm and contained two types of wall-forming bodies, canaliculi and amylopectin granules. Differentiating microgamonts conformed in fine structure with that observed in other eimerians. Their sizes increased from 15.4 × 4.2 to 28 × 8.4 µm while dividing to over 70 nuclei, which formed a corresponding yield of microgametes. Cannon's publications (1967a, b) were the first com- prehensive contributions on Australian lizard coccidia of the genera Eimeria and Isospora, preceded only by a description of Eimeria molochis from Moloch horridus by Bovee and Telford (1965). Subsequent contributions included a description of seven new species of Isospora, one from Cryptoblepharus virgatus (Finkelman and Paperna 1994a, b, and 2002), an account of the ultra- structure of these described Isospora (Paperna and Finkelman 1998), a report on the finding of a globidium (Paperna 1999), and a description of Eimeria gastro- sauri from the stomach of a gecko (Paperna 1994). This latter coccidium, found in an unusual habitat for coccidians, was examined ultrastructurally (Paperna 1993) and exhibited several peculiarities which were not seen in Eimeria species inhabiting the intestinal epithelium of reptilian hosts (Paperna and Lainson 1999a). To date, the only other available fine structural account on Eimeria species of lizards which undergo Endogenous Development in the cytoplasm of the gut mucosal epithelial cells is that of E. boveroi (Paperna and Lainson 1999a). In the present communication, the Endogenous Development in the cytoplasm of the small intestinal epithelium of a new species of Eimeria from the Australian skink Cryptoblepharus virgatus (Gar- man) is described from material examined histologically and by transmission electron microscopy.

The Endogenous Development of four new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Australian geckos

Isospora gehyrae n. sp. from Gehyra cf. variegata in South Australia have 18.5-22.5×17.5−20.0 μm oöcysts with 10.0-12.5×7.5-9.0 μm sporocysts; Endogenous stages develop in the host cell cytoplasm. Of the two species found in Heteronotia binoei from northern Queensland, Isospora cytoheteronotis n. sp., with oöcysts of 20.0-26.0×17.5-25.0 μm and sporocysts of 10.0-13.5×7.5-11.5 μm, undergoes Endogenous Development in its host cell cytoplasm, whereas I. nucleoheteronotis n. sp., with oöcysts of 17.5-22.5×17.5-21.5 μm and sporocysts of 9.0-12.5×6.5-10.0 μm, develops in the host cell nucleus. I. oedurae n. sp. from Oedura rhombifer in northern Queensland has oöcysts of 22.5-25.0×22.5-24.0 μm and sporocysts of 12.5-14.0×7.5-11.5 μm, and undergoes Endogenous Development in its host cell nuclei.

The Endogenous Development of two new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Thai geckoes

I. platyurusi n. sp. in Cosymbotus platyurus from Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen and I. uptoni n. sp. in Hemidactylus frenatus from Chiang Mai. Oocysts of I. platyurusi are spherical to subspherical, 19–22.5 × 16.5–21.5 μm and have two ovoid sporocysts of 11.5–14 × 7.5–9 μm. Oocysts of I. uptoni are spherical to subspherical, 24–31.5 × 20–27.5 μm and have two ovoid sporocysts of 12.5–15 × 9–11.5 μm. Both species have sporocysts with Stieda bodies and undergo Endogenous Development in the nucleus of the host gut epithelial cells. On the completion of merogony and gamogony, the host nucleus is reduced to a thin envelope.

PapernaAbstract:Three new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 are described from agamid lizards, Isospora cannoni n. sp. in Diporiphora australis from northern Queensland, Australia, I. choochotei n. sp. in Calotes mystaceus from northern Thailand, and I. deserti n. sp. in Agama pallida from Israel. I. cannoni oöcysts are subspherical, 20–25 × 22.5–27.5 μm with two ovoid sporocysts, 14–15.5 × 10–11.5 μm. I. choochotei oöcysts are spherical to subspherical, 24–32 × 28–32.5 μm with two ovoid sporocysts, 11 × 15.5–18 μm. I. deserti oöcysts are spherical, 25–28 μm in diameter with two ovoid sporocysts, 10–11 × 14–17.5 μm. All species had sporocysts with Stieda bodies and underwent Endogenous Development in the nucleus of the host gut epithelial cells. At completion of merogony and gamogony, the host nucleus was reduced to a thin envelope. The significance of Endogenous stage characteristics in Isospora taxonomy is discussed.

The cost structure and heat pricing in the case of an 800 kW solid fuel boiler is presented, and the profitability of local heat entrepreneurship is analysed with scenarios of different investment costs and fuel prices. The results indicate that a district heating (DH) system, using locally produced woodchips, could produce heat at a lower price than single-house heating systems using light fuel oil. The profitability of replacing existing heating units by investing in a new district heating (DH) scheme is very dependent on the available investment support, price level of woodchips and substituted light fuel oil, and the amount of sold energy. In the case of an 800 kW DH scheme, and woodchip prices of 14 and 22 €/MWh, investments should remain under break-even points of 280 and 420 €/kW of heating power (230,000-335,000€).
