Education and Information Technologies, 2001Co-Authors: Barrie J Thompson, H M EdwardsAbstract:The prime aim of the workshop was to provide a forum to consider the global dimensions of a Software Engineering Profession and determine the relevance and usefulness of an initiative concerning the harmonization of Professional standards which had been produced under the auspices of the International Federation of Information Processing. In particular the workshop addressed: the current situation with regard to certification and/or licensing in different countries, the drivers and constraints regarding Software Engineering Professionalism, the extent to which world-wide Software Engineering Professionalism is achievable (particularly in the light of IFIP’s proposals regarding harmonization), and possible strategy(ies) that would assist in achieving such world-wide Software Engineering Professionalism. A pre workshop survey was carried out at the conference and the results of this are reported. The two staged operation and results of the workshop are then detailed. Initial position statements are summarised and the conclusions from the four separate subgroups that operated within each of the two stages are reported. Finally the major points from a general discussion on what the future goals and strategies for achieving a recognised Profession should be are presented followed by the overall conclusion of the workshop participants.

The first measure is based on the Engineering labour force. Although Engineering labour force is the most comprehensive measure of how many individuals in the Australian labour market possess formal educational qualifications in Engineering, it include individuals employed in both Engineering and generic work. The second measure narrows the Engineering labour force to those individuals who are formally qualified in Engineering and who work in recognised Engineering occupations. Discussions of Engineering skills shortages needs to focus on the utilisation of Engineering skills in addition to conventional labour force measures such as labour force participation, employment and unemployment.

Are women engineers in Lebanon prepared for the challenges of an Engineering Profession

The author investigated the following questions: What are the influences behind females’ decisions to choose Engineering as their major course of study? What are the motives behind this decision? What are the perceptions of females regarding the essential skills for a successful Engineering career? An online survey consisting of Likert-scale items was completed by 327 female engineers who graduated from universities in Lebanon and now work in various locations around the world. A genuine interest in the field appeared to be the main influence in the participants’ decisions to choose Engineering Profession. The potential for Professional growth was the leading motivator for choosing Engineering. Personal vision: enhancing work engagement and the retention of women in the Engineering Profession
Frontiers in psychology, 2014Co-Authors: Kathleen Buse, Diana BilimoriaAbstract:This study examines how personal vision enhances work engagement and the retention of women in the Engineering Profession. Using a mixed method approach to understand the factors related to the retention of women in the Engineering Profession, we first interviewed women who persisted and women who opted out of the Profession (Buse & Bilimoria, 2014). In these rich stories we found that women who persisted had a personal vision that included their Profession, and that this personal vision enabled them to overcome the bias, barriers and discrimination in the Engineering workplace. To validate this finding on a larger population, we developed a scale to measure one’s personal vision conceptualized as the ideal self (Boyatzis & Akrivou, 2006). The measure was tested in a pilot study and then used in a study of 495 women with Engineering degrees. The findings validate that the ideal self is comprised of self efficacy, hope, optimism and core identity. For these women the ideal self directly impacts work engagement and work engagement directly impacts career commitment to Engineering. The findings add to extant theory related to the role of personal vision and intentional change theory. From a practical perspective these findings will aid efforts to retain women in Engineering and other STEM Professions.
