    Abstract:

    Handling large knowledge bases of information from different domains such as the World Wide Web is a complex problem addressed in the Resource Description Framework (RDF) by adding semantic meaning to the data itself. The amount of linked data has brought with it a number of specialized databases that are capable of storing and processing RDF data, called RDF stores. We explore the RDF store landscape with the aim of finding an RDF store that sufficiently meets the storage needs of an Enhanced Living Environment, more concretely the requirements of a Smart Space platform aimed at running on a cluster set up of low-power hardware that can be run locally entirely at home with the purpose of logging data for a reactive assistive system involving, e.g., activity recognition or domotics. We present a literature analysis of RDF stores and identify promising candidates for implementation of consumer Smart Spaces. Based on the insights provided with our study, we conclude by suggesting different relevant aspects of RDF storage systems that need to be considered in Ambient Assisted Living Environments and a comparison of available solutions.

    Abstract The aim of this chapter is to present the Ambient Assisted Living/Enhanced Living Environment (AAL/ELE) platform architecture that is an open system for internetworking and defines a provision of services to the citizens. The work is describing the framework, main hierarchical layers, common and specific services and applications, important functionality, possible technologies, supported protocols and common interfaces that will allow interoperability between already existing and newly designed platforms. The described platform is not a single product in the cloud but generic specification of many existing platforms and their possible extended internetworked versions. The chapter identifies main platform building blocks and is not limited to sensor networks, wire and wireless communication infrastructure for AAL services, requirement analysis, stakeholders' profiling, protocols, platform analysis algorithms, Quality of Service, Quality of Experience analyses, capacity planning, data models for medical/personal data acquisition, processing algorithms, user interaction interfaces, end-user testing, mobile AAL/ELE, web-based, cloud-based AAL/ELE applications as well as AAL as a Service (AALaaS) and ELE as a Service (ELEaaS).

    Abstract:

    This chapter presents possible use-case scenarios for end-user testing, verification and validation of Ambient Assisted Living and Enhanced Living Environment (AAL/ELE) platforms and services. It consists of many use-case scenarios related to the functionality, connectivity, interoperability, interfaces, and protocols against end-user specific requirements for AAL as a Service (AALaaS) and ELE as a Service (ELEaaS). The work is based on the existing Living labs experience and enriched by customized information and communication services known from ICT sector. Description of the services and platforms for ELE is done in general terms. Testing needs to be performed in conformance to the general type of functions. Furthermore, customization of the services, applicability to the needs of all stakeholders, flexibility to the data exchange and integration, interoperability between different versions and types of platforms are verified.

    Abstract In this article, a full-access waiting multi-server queue with a statedependent arrival and departure processes is investigated and suggested for use as a generic traffic model of the novel concept of the Enhanced Living Environment as a Service ELEaaS. The generalized arrival and service flows with nonlinear state dependence intensities are used. The idea is based on the analytical continuation of the Poisson arrival process and Bernoulli service process, and the classic M/M/n queuing system. Birth and death processes and state-dependent rates are applied. The suggested new queuing system is of a Mg/Mg/n/k type in Kendal notation with a generalized arrival and departure processes Mg. The input and output intensities depend nonlinearly on the system state with defined parameters - the socalled "peaked factors". The state probabilities of the system are obtained using the general solution of the birth and death processes. The influence of the peaked factors on the queuing behavior is evaluated showing that state-dependent arrival and service rates may change significantly the characteristics of the queuing system. The simplicity and uniformity in representing both peaked and smooth behavior make this queuing model also attractive for future networks' analysis and synthesis.

The personal Enhanced Living Environment consists of body area and home automation network. They are key factors for patient’s comfortable Living outside hospitals. Home, car, working place, park automation support the mobility, social integration, possibility of the patients to manage everyday tasks. Experiments carried out using sensors and holter prove the vitality of the solution partially. The platform is capable of working independently from the network connectivity, uses multi-homing, is open to migration to new technologies

    As the number of published scientific articles increases, the analysis of trends and state-of-the-art in software engineering is becoming very time-consuming and laborious task. To address the ever-growing demands for systematic literatures review techniques, rapid review and scoping reviews techniques have emerged. We used an NLP powered tool, which employs the PRISMA surveying methodology, to automate most of the review processes. We used it to automatically review relevant articles indexed in IEEE Xplore, PubMed and Springer digital libraries on the topic “Software Development for Enhanced Living Environments and Ambient Assisted Living”. The relevant articles identified by the NLP toolkit contained up to 21 properties clustered into 3 logical groups. We discovered that Software Development for Enhanced and Assisted Living Environments attracted an increased attention from the scientific communities over the last 10 years and showed several trends in the specific research topics that fall into this scope. The research uncovered that iterative software methodology had been the most attractive research topic in the field. Despite the enormous empirical evidence on application and success stories of agile development methodologies in many software development engineering, it received a little attention from the scientific community in the software development for Enhanced and Assisted Living Environments. The NLP toolkit identified the most relevant articles that contained the defined properties in the search. Hence, it significantly reduced the manual work, while also generating informative tables, charts and graphs.

    This chapter presents results from ambient assisted Living (AAL) and Enhanced Living Environment (ELE) service identification and testing performed within an AAL lab. Possible end-user testing groups and scenarios of `AAL as a service' and `ELE as a service' (ELEaaS) platforms are described and specified. Firstly, protocols and services classifications are presented according to the end-user-specific requirements from communication and information point of view as the chapter aims to show how end-users, caregivers and service providers can be prepared for the challenges of the market. The aim of the test group is to verify and validate the platforms and services for the ELE created, integrated, described and specified. The testing is based on the platform technology and depends on the user requirements' analysis and ongoing work throughout use-cases. Existing Living labs experience has been used and enriched by customized information and communication services known from the information and communication technologies sector. Description of the ELEaaS is done in general terms along with the testing needed to be performed against the general type of provided functionalities. Furthermore, customization of the services, applicability to the needs of all stakeholders, flexibility for data exchange, integration and interoperability between different versions and types of platforms need to be also verified.
