    This paper deals with the conceptual design and development of an Enterprise Modeling and integration framework using knowledge discovery and data mining. First, the paper briefly presents the background and current state-of-the-art of knowledge discovery in databases and data mining systems and projects. Next, Enterprise knowledge engineering is dealt with. The paper suggests a novel approach of utilizing existing Enterprise reference architectures, integration and Modeling frameworks by the introduction of new Enterprise views such as mining and knowledge views. An extension and a generic exploration of the information view that already exists within some Enterprise Models are also proposed. The Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture is also outlined versus the existing architectures and the proposed Enterprise framework.     Abstract:

    Modeling Enterprise Architecture (EA) requires the representation of multiple views for an Enterprise. This could be done by a team of stakeholders that essentially have different backgrounds. One way to do this is to structure the Model into hierarchical levels each of which can be of interest to just some, not all, stakeholders. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of EA, stakeholders simply cannot choose a single Modeling approach, even a widely-recognized one, to build their Enterprise Model and make it viewable and understandable to the whole team. Developing a Modeling framework that can be applied uniformly throughout the entire Enterprise Model and that can be used by all stakeholders is thus challenging. We based our work on the RM-ODP (Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing) - a standardization effort that defines essential concepts for Modeling distributed systems, as well as ODP-related international standards/recommendations, to develop such a Modeling framework that we call SeamCAD. This framework consists of a computer-aided tool and a language behind the tool for Modeling EA in a hierarchical manner. SeamCAD makes RM-ODP applicable in the context of multi-level EA and consolidates the SEAM - a family of methods for seamless integration between disciplines.

    Enterprise architecture (EA) projects require analyzing and designing across the whole Enterprise and its environment. Enterprise architects, therefore, frequently develop Enterprise Models that span from the markets in which the organization operates down to the implementation of the IT systems that support its operations. In this paper, we present SEAM for EA: a method for defining an Enterprise Model in which all the systems are systematically represented with the same Modeling ontology. We base our Modeling ontology on the foundation Modeling concepts defined in Part 2 of ISO/ITU Standard “Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing” (RM-ODP). This work has two contributions to Enterprise architecture: the SEAM for EA method itself and the use of Part 2 of the RM-ODP standard as a Modeling ontology.

    Abstract:

    In Enterprise architecture, the goal is to integrate business resources and IT resources in order to improve an Enterprise's competitiveness. In an Enterprise architecture project, the development team usually constructs a Model that represents the Enterprise: the Enterprise Model. In this paper, we present a Modeling language for building such Enterprise Models. Our Enterprise Models are hierarchical object-oriented representations of the Enterprises. This paper presents the foundations of our language (i.e. the Living System Theory and the RM-ODP standard), the definition of the language and ends by presenting an example of an Enterprise Model developed with our web-based CAD tool.

    Abstract:

    Enterprise architects seek to align Enterprise processes and structure with their supporting IT systems so that Enterprises can flourish in their environment. The Enterprise architecture (EA) discipline has emerged from business best practices. EA frameworks are therefore mostly informal. As a result there is a lack of EA tools that can help Enterprise architects to check this alignment. Most notably, current EA tools do not help Enterprise architects to formalize the alignment of the multiple levels that constitute an Enterprise Model. In this paper we propose an EA framework and an associated tool that provide alignment checking along the functional and organizational hierarchies. We illustrate this approach with the Sun Microsystems industrial example of the Pet Store.

    Abstract:

    An Enterprise Model comprises various abstractions of an Enterprise that represent both information systems and the surrounding action systems. These different Models are integrated in order to avoid redundant work and to contribute to a tight and consistent integration of action systems and information systems. For this purpose, the method MEMO (Multi-Perspective Enterprise Modelling) features a family of Modelling languages, each of which is aimed at representing specific perspectives and aspects of an Enterprise. Within the MEMO languages, the Organisation Modelling Language (MEMO OrgML) is of outstanding relevance. Its specification is distributed on two reports. A previous report focussed on the specification of the organisation structure. This report presents the part of the language specification that allows for Modelling business processes. It builds on a further previous report that presents the results of an extensive requirements analysis. The report starts with an analysis of basic concepts and a discussion of peculiarities related to the specification of a process Modelling language. Subsequently, the language specification is presented. It comprises a meta Model with supplementary constraints, detailed comments on core language concepts and a dictionary of the notational symbols in two variants. Finally, the use of the language is demonstrated with examples.

    Abstract:

    Organisation Models are at the core of Enterprise Model, since they represent key aspects of a company's action system. Within MEMO, the Organisation Modelling Language (OrgML) supports the construction of organisation Models. They can be divided into two main abstractions: a static abstraction is focusing on the structure of an organisation that reflects the division of labour with respect to static responsibilities and a dynamic abstraction that is focusing on Models of business processes. In this report, those concepts of the OrgML are presented that serve Modelling static aspects of an organisation. They cover prevalent concepts used in organisational charts as well as concepts required for specifying temporal units of work, roles and committees. The description of these Modelling concepts comprises three parts: A meta Model serves to specify the abstract syntax and semantics. A language description includes an overview of all concepts and the corresponding notational elements (concrete syntax). Finally, the use of the concepts is illustrated through various examples.

    For many companies, the strategic as well as the organizational fit of their information systems is a pivotal factor for staying competitive. At the same time, there is an increasing demand for integrating business processes and informations systems with those of customers and suppliers. The resulting need for organizational changes and the introduction of corresponding information systems is a challenging task. The complexity of the task requires a separation of concerns. At the same time it causes language barriers between various stakeholders, especially between business people and information technology professionals. Enterprise Models provide various abstractions that help with the design of corporate information systems which are in line with a company's organization and its long term strategy. They also promise to provide a common conceptual foundation to foster the communication between people with different professional backgrounds. In this paper we introduce a Model for Enterprise Modelling that is based on an extendable set of special purpose Modeling languages, e.g. for describing corporate strategies, business processes, resources or information. The visual languages provide intuitive abstractions for various observers. The languages are defined in metaModels which in turn are specified through a common meta-metaModel. Similar to a specialized technical language, they provide concepts that help with structuring and analyzing a domain according to specific objectives. Since the languages are specified in a semi formal way, the Models allow for the generation of software prototypes. The languages share common concepts which allow for a tight integration of the various parts of an Enterprise Model. In addition to offering specialized Modeling languages, the Modeling method also includes examples, case studies and reference Models - to promote the re-use of concepts and artefacts. The use of the method is illustrated by an example, where two different partial Models are being integrated.
