Gross alpha and beta, (226)Ra, (232)Th, and (40)K activities were measured in both tap water and soil samples. Although high rates of stomach and esophagus cancers have been reported previously in Van the underlying reasons have not hitherto been defined. Incidences of cancers were highest in the Gurpinar (326.0) and Ozalp (377.1) counties (p<0.001). As to the results of the gross alpha and gross beta Radioactivity measurements in the drinking water, these two counties also had high beta radionuclide levels: Gurpinar (140 mBq/dm³) and Ozalp (206 mBq/dm³). Even if within the normal range, a relation between the higher rate of the incidence of stomach and esophagus cancers with that of the higher rate of beta radionuclide activity was clear. On Spearman correlation analysis, the relation between higher beta radionuclide levels and cancer incidence was found to be statistically significant (p<0.01). According to the results of the analysis, Van residents receive an average 1.86 mSv/y annual dose from outdoor gamma radiation, ingestion of radionuclides in the drinking water, and indoor 222 Rn activity. Moreover, gross alpha and beta activities were found to be extremely high in all of the lakes around the city of Van, Turkey. Further investigations with long-term detailed Environmental radiation measurements are needed regarding the relationship between cancer cases and Environmental Radioactivity in the city of Van.

    Abstract:

    An Environmental Radioactivity survey carried out in the Sabugal region, Portugal, showed enhanced Radioactivity levels in surface water streams related to water discharges from old uranium mines. Water from irrigation wells in this region displayed variable radionuclide levels due to natural occurrence of radionuclides and to contamination by mine water drainage. Horticulture products grown near the uranium mine sites contained elevated radium (226Ra) concentrations, but lower concentrations of uranium and other radionuclides. Despite the relatively high Radioactivity in irrigation water, the absorption and accumulation of radionuclides in agriculture products were limited. Nevertheless, taking into consideration the volume of uranium waste piles, it is considered as necessary to improving the management of mine wastes and mine drainage to prevent further increase of Environmental Radioactivity in the area. The assessment of Environmental impact and radiation issues lasting from the past uranium mining shall be used as lessons to improving future mining activities.

    Abstract:

    Environmental Radioactivity monitoring programmes are now implemented in many countries around legacy uranium mining and milling sites and current uranium mining sites and include, for example, the analyses of soil, plant, meat and water samples. Often, there are legal requirements on periodic reporting of this monitoring. The results are used to assess compliance with the standards for radiation exposure of the public. To provide quality assurance, there is a need for reference materials (RMs) for use in monitoring programmes related to assessment of Environmental contamination, uranium waste management and radiation protection in uranium areas. Reliable uranium supply to satisfy the increasing demand for low-carbon electricity production needs to meet the increasing Environmental and health safety standards and public concerns for responsible information.

  • Environmental Radioactivity Assessment Around Old Uranium Mining Sites Near Mangualde (Viseu), Portugal

    Abstract:

    Uranium ore was extracted in the surroundings of Mangualde city, North of Portugal, in the mines of Cunha Baixa, Quinta do Bispo and Espinho until a few years ago. Mining waste, milling tailings and acid mine waters are the on site remains of this extractive activity. Environmental Radioactivity measurements were performed in and around these sites in order to assess the dispersal of radionuclides from uranium mining waste and the spread of acidic waters resulting from the in situ uranium leaching with sulphuric acid. Results show migration of acid waters into groundwater around the Cunha Baixa mine. This groundwater is tapped by irrigation wells in the agriculture area near the Cunha Baixa village. Water from wells displayed uranium (238U) concentrations up to 19 × 103 mBq L−1 and sulphate ion concentrations up to 1070 mg L−1. These enhanced concentrations are positively correlated with low water pH, pointing to a common origin for Radioactivity, dissolved sulphate, and acidity in underground mining works. Radionuclide concentrations were determined in horticulture and farm products from this area also and results suggest low soil to plant transfer of radionuclides and low food chain transfer of radionuclides to man. Analysis of aerosols in surface air showed re suspension of dust from mining and milling waste heaps. Therefore, it is recommended to maintain mine water treatment and to plan remediation of these mine sites in order to prevent waste dispersal in the environment.

  • Environmental Radioactivity measurements in Kastamonu region of northern Turkey.

    Abstract:

    Located in the north-western part of Turkey, the province of Kastamonu has lately been receiving national attention because of its cultural and touristic attractions. This study assesses the Environmental Radioactivity levels of the region through measurements of indoor radon concentrations and indoor/outdoor gamma absorbed dose in air and radionuclide activities in surface soil and drinking water. The indoor (222)Rn activity concentration was found to be 98.4 Bq/m(3) equivalent to an annual effective dose of 2.48 mSv. The indoor and outdoor gamma absorbed doses were measured as 54.81 and 48.03 nGy/h, respectively, corresponding to a total gamma radiation level (of terrestrial and cosmic origin) of 0.33 mSv/y. The activity concentrations in the soil samples collected from the study area were determined as 32.93, 27.17, 431.43 Bq/kg for the natural radionuclides (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K, respectively, and 8.02 Bq/kg for the fission product (137)Cs. These natural Radioactivity sources result in a terrestrial gamma level of 60 microSv/y. The water samples collected from the region carry an average of 0.0089 Bq/l of gross alpha and 0.271 Bq/l of gross beta activities which together cause an annual effective dose of 1.83 microSv. The measurement results obtained in this study indicate that the region has a background radiation level that is within the natural limits and shows no significant departure from the other parts of the country.

    Abstract:

    This study aims to assess the Environmental Radioactivity levels of Harran Plain located within the boundaries of the south‐eastern province of Sanliurfa, Turkey. In addition to being at the center of Turkey’s major irrigation and development project (South Eastern Anatolian Project, GAP), this 1500 km2 region is famous for its historic attractions. The outdoor gamma dose rates were measured at selected points of the study area using a plastic scintillator. The activity concentrations in the soil samples collected from the study area were determined by gamma spectrometry for the natural radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K and the fission product 137Cs. The gross alpha and beta activities in the water samples collected from the region was measured using a low‐level gamma spectrometry device. A comparison of the measurement results obtained in this study with those of national and world averages are presented in graphical and tabular forms.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This paper presents the Environmental Radioactivity concentrations in Tekirdag, a city in the region of Marmara in Turkey. Indoor and outdoor γ-exposure rates were measured by Eberline smart portable counter, ESP-2. Gross α- and β-counting of the water samples taken from municipal supplies, wells, and fountains were performed by using a gas-flow proportional counter, Berthold LB770-PC 10. Soil samples, collected from 40 different points in the area, were analyzed by using a γ-ray spectrometry system connected with an HPGe detector and the Radioactivity concentrations of the radio nuclides of uranium and thorium series 40K and 137Cs were determined. Dose and risk calculations were made.
