  • the Epistemological Problem of relativism reply to olson
    Philosophical Studies, 2001
    Co-Authors: Harold W. Noonan
    Abstract:

In his challenging discussion of relativist views of personal identity (1997) Eric Olson considers various ways of defending the popular view that as things are certain things we say about personal identity are false but would have been true if we had thought and spoken differently. One way of clarifying this view which he considers involves acceptance of a capacious ontology of rational beings with ambiguity of reference (1997, p. 159). But this strategy, he argues, brings with it a vexing Epistemological Problem, so that even if its ontology and semantics can be accepted it does not provide the relativist with a satisfactory way of defending his position. In what follows I argue that Olson is wrong to think that the capacious ontology strategy brings with it the Epistemological puzzles he describes and argue that its ontological commitments are ones that have to be accepted by anyone - relativist or not - given certain plausible, and widely accepted assumptions about vagueness, identity and the character of the psychological.

  • Irresolvable Disagreement, Objectivist Antirealism and Logical Revision
    Erkenntnis, 2020
    Co-Authors: Manfred Harth
    Abstract:

Meta-ethical realism faces the serious Epistemological Problem of how to explain our epistemic access to moral reality. In the face of this challenge many are sceptical about non-naturalist realism. Nonetheless, there is good reason to acknowledge moral objectivity: morality shows all the signs of a truth-apt discourse but doesn’t exhibit the typical relativity inducing features. This suggests a middle-ground position, a theory that embraces the virtues of realism but does avoid its vices: objectivist antirealism. In this paper, I’ll discuss, mainly following Crispin Wright’s account of moral truth as superassertibility, a promising version of objectivist antirealism and show how to cope with notorious Problems, notably those arising from the thought that moral disagreement might be possible in which nobody is guilty of a cognitive shortcoming, which contradicts the antirealist claim that moral truth is not beyond our epistemic reach. The solution is to deny the possibility of cognitively faultless moral disagreement by arguing that cognitively blameless thinkers either agree or stay agnostic and, therefore, never disagree about any moral proposition. Since assuming an agnostic stance on the part of such thinkers contradicts the antirealist’s conception of truth—even within the limits of intuitionistic logic—I’ll propose an alternative logical revision for the moral discourse: a three-valued logic with epistemically construed truth-values.

  • the mother observer relationship an examination of the participant role of the observer in mother infant observation
    British Journal of Psychotherapy, 1991
    Co-Authors: Helga Coulter
    Abstract:

SUMMARY. The relationship between mother and observer in mother-infant observation as described by Esther Bick is examined. Specifically, the question as to whether this relationship influences what is being observed is considered. The author gives an account of her own relationship as an observer with a mother. The mother was an epileptic and fell with her baby (then six weeks old) causing the baby to suffer a broken skull. Exploration of events during the period of observation leads to the conclusion that the relationship between the mother and the observer was one of transference. Within this transference the observer seemed to be the mother of the one observed. This together with the effects on the observed mother's unconscious conflict with her own mother due to epilepsy is described. Given transference in the mother-observer relationship doubts are raised as to the tenability of the attitude of distance and non-interference prescribed for the observer. The conclusion is drawn that, in any case, the role of the observer is a participant role, which poses the Epistemological Problem of the interference of the observer with the observed.

  • The Semiotic-Semantic Nature of Music
    Musicological Annual, 2007
    Co-Authors: Gregor Pompe
    Abstract:

The purpose of the article is to solve the methodological-Epistemological Problem of the key position of semiotics and semantics in music. This is solved with the aid of the discovery of the dual nature of musical referentiality (internal and external references) and of the cultural, semiotic-semantic conditionality of the musical narrative.
