  • Performing Ethnic Relations in Russia's North Caucasus: regional spectacles in Stavropol’ krai
    Central Asian Survey, 2014
    Co-Authors: Andrew Foxall
    Abstract:

Using materials gathered during fieldwork carried out in Russia in 2008 and 2009, this paper examines the ‘Day of Stavropol’ krai 2009’ celebration and links it to debates on Ethnic Relations, identity and nationalism in post-Soviet Russia. It is argued that celebrations, festivals, parades and other ‘spectacles’ are significant, yet often overlooked, influences on Ethnic Relations. Although authorities at national and regional scale play a prominent role in governing Ethnic Relations, it is often the case that they revert to Soviet-era practices – such as the ‘folklorization’ of Ethnic groups – and produce a narrative that proclaims the ‘eternal harmony’ of Ethnic Relations. Given widespread Ethnic tensions that exist in Russia, such a representation of Ethnic Relations is far from the reality lived by people in everyday life. Thus, this paper explores how citizens' understandings of Ethnic Relations relates to that portrayed by state authorities.

  • Teaching and Learning Guide for: Race and Ethnic Relations
    Sociology Compass, 2009
    Co-Authors: Rodney D. Coates
    Abstract:

Syllabus This course will explore the concepts of race and Ethnicity and the dynamics of inter-group Relations. It will cover the main historical and global processes that have led to the formation of Ethnic groups and racial minorities. In the process, we will examine several groups, historical periods, and geo-political issues in detail. Class sessions will consist primarily of group discussions, supplemented by lectures, films, and in-class projects. Goals statements 1)  Develop working understanding of basic theoretical issues associated with race and Ethnicity in sociology. 2)  Develop working understanding of how these theoretical issues effect policy, national and international discourse, and inter/intra-group Relations. 3)  Develop working understanding of how economic policies and institutions, political systems, and social institutions effect race and Ethnic Relations. 4)  Develop an understanding of how theories are used to interpret race and Ethnic Relations. 5)  Develop understanding regarding how the processes of racialization and/or Ethnicity produce and sustain segregation, discrimination, and inequality. 6)  Develop understanding regarding how political processes are affected by systems of racialization (Massey and Denton). 7)  Develop understanding of overt and covert racism, and how they explain current racial trends in both US and international contexts. • On Ethnic Relations in Post-Soviet Societies
    Sociological Research, 1999
    Co-Authors: Iurii V. Arutiunian
    Abstract:

Nowadays, everyone is familiar with the complex Ethnic Relations of the states created on the vast territories of the former Soviet Union. Time has shown that the resurgence of power- and property-based groups that have succeeded in manipulating the Ethnic label to serve their own purposes has provoked interEthnic rivalry in these places and created intrastate tension. This is clearly evident in various aspects of social life in post-Soviet societies.
