After more than 100 years of formal definition in this area of knowledge, it is possible to imagine that some things have changed in this way. Thus, in this chapter, we will seek to address some of the current thinking about the path that Ethnobotany has taken or will still have to go on to consolidate its identity as a science. Of course, such thoughts do not necessarily correspond to a consensus among ethnobotanists but instead emerge from concerns presented by some research groups, particularly the authors of this book.

Is Ethnobotany an Ecological Science? Steps towards a complex Ethnobotany

In principle, because they have common interests, like the conservation of plant resources. Nevertheless, the consolidation of the ecology as a science of synthesis that is based on the complexity of relationships between organisms and their surroundings, allows the ecology to provide a conceptual framework for more complex and comprehensive Ethnobotany. This is also, for origin, a science of synthesis. In this contribution we discuss the basic aspects of ecology that can become guides for a complex framework of Ethnobotany, which acts as a context in which their contributions to acquire significance. It also discusses various aspects of Ethnobotany which, by its own complexity, are linked to the theoretical framework of ecology. Finally, we consider Ethnobotany as an ecological science, from which certain assumptions are given, that can guide investigations based on the complex relationships between people and plants, the object of study of this science.

One of the first explicit responses to the “weak science” criticism (due to the largely descriptive nature of much of the published research) can be found in Phillips and Gentry (1993a,b). The term quantitative Ethnobotany is defined in these works “as the application of quantitative techniques to direct analysis of contemporary plant use data”. The term quantitative Ethnobotany appears for the first time in Balee (1987) in an article published in a Brazilian journal, and was mentioned in that same year in an interesting paper by Prance and collaborators (1987) that had William Balee as one of the coauthors. Since then, the term “quantitative Ethnobotany” has been increasing used by other workers in the field. According to the “Web of Science” data base, this phrase has appeared in approximately 87 publications, and with the references cited in the paper by Phillips & Gentry comes to a total of 142 citations.

Ethnobotany and Its Modern Applied Research in China

The extensive demanding on plant resources for industry development in nineteen century and the richness of plant resources in colonial territories were the great driven force for Ethnobotany. Robber,tea,coffee,coca and many important medical and aromatic plants,precious timbers were exploited from tropical forests which greatly supported the development of industry and world trade. Since last century,accelerated industry development and economy globalization resulted degradetion of natural resources and environment world wide,biodiversity conservation and environment protection have been the common goal and global concern, Ethnobotany as a scientific field has been development from classic field survey and utilization of plant resources to plant conservation and traditional botanical knowledge protection. Maintaining the co-exist of biodiversity and cultural diversity,to serve for sustainable use of plant resources and socio-economic development are the core tasks for Ethnobotany in the new era of the world. Ethnobotany is deep-rooted in traditional Chinese culture. However Ethnobotany as discipline to study with in China was begun in 1982 at beginning of the reform policy and opening up to the world,fast development of industry has resulted huge demanding to natural resources and modernization of agriculture has a great influence on traditional knowledge and genetic resources in China,which are the most important issues in the sustainable development of China today and provides a historical opportunity for the new development of Ethnobotany in China.

Ethnobotany and the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity

Ethnobotany is used in many countries throughout the world for documenting indigenous knowledge of plants. Consequently,many inventories of useful plants in local floras have been compiled. Over the last hundred years,local knowledge about plants,gained through ethnobotanical studies,has contributed greatly to the development of medicine and agriculture,and to the discovery of numerous new plant-based products. Since the 1960s,the scientific community has become increasingly aware of the magnitude of global environmental change, now occurring at a speed never before encountered in human history. Natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate and there are threats of imminent extinction to many species. Faced with this crisis,ethnobotanical research assumes a new urgency,not only as a tool for trying to deal with environmental degradation,but also for its potential usefulness in contributing to sustainable use of plant resources and poverty reduction among rural communities. Ethnobotanical research can contribute to modern development in many ways,including: creating information / data-banks of traditional knowledge about plants for use in conservation and future development; managing the landscape so as to best deliver conservation benefits of all types; enhancing rural community engagement in rural devel- opment. This paper discusses Ethnobotany and its role in modern development and biodiversity conservation,the challenges that biodiversity and sustainable use face,and the biocultural approach of biodiversity use and conservation.

Review on Two Decades Development of Ethnobotany in China
Acta Botanica Yunnanica, 2008Co-Authors: Pei ShengAbstract:This paper presents and discusses on two decades development history of Ethnobotany in China.Ethnobotany appeared as a scientific research subject in 1896 in USA,Ethnobotany as discipline to study with in China was begun in 1982;and in 1987 the first Ethnobotany research department was established at the Kunming Institute of Botany,Chinese Academy of Sciences.After twenty years development,Ethnobotany in China has been developed from basic,or desecriptive research into applied phase,immense progress has been made in sustainable plant resource use,biodiversity conservation and rural regional-coordination development.However,Ethnobotany as discipline in China is remarkable in establishement of theoretic framework;identification of research areas;methodological development and set-up appropriate approaches for basic and applied Ethnobotany.This paper presents and discusses development history of Ethnobotany in China;advances in research and field-site development;discipline development and training of young scientists;theoretical innovation and development,and promotion of ethnobotanical research and training in China,which are largely based on the works that have been done and development facts presented at the Kunming Institute of Botany,Chinese Academy of Sciences.Meanwhile suggestions for further development of Chinese Ethnobotany in three aspects are proposed in the paper.
