  • Generalizability and specificity of the stigma associated with the mental illness label: A reconsideration twenty‐five years later
    Journal of Community Psychology, 1995
Co-Authors: Linda J. Skinner, Kenneth K. Berry, Sue Ellen Griffith, Brenda Byers
    Abstract:

The current status of the generalizability (i.e., application across situations) and specificity (i.e., differentiation from other deviant behavior stigmas) of the mental illness stigma was re-examined 25 years after delineation by Lamy (1966). College undergraduate students completed 30 forced-choice items measuring deep-level attitudes toward ex-mental patients vis-a-vis Ex-Convicts or ex-drug addicts. Etiological factors and various areas of functioning (i.e., psychological and social functioning, dating and romantic relationships, family, children, work, and rehabilitation and recidivism) were considered. An attitudinal hierarchy was found for the three deviant social roles, with the ex-drug addict role eliciting the least negative attitudes and the Ex-Convict role eliciting the most negative attitudes. The current results indicate that the stigma associated with the ex-mental patient role continues to be specific to that deviant social role; however, as compared to the results of Lamy, attitudes toward this deviant social role have evolved in a positive direction. The generalizability of the stigma reported by Lamy has diminished in relation to negative attitudes but remains somewhat stable for positive attitudes. Although college students were the participants in Lamy's study, their use in this study may restrict the generalizability of these deep-level attitude findings.

  • Developing Convict Criminology Beyond North America
    2014
Co-Authors: Jeffrey Ian Ross, Andreas Aresti, Sacha Darke, Greg Newbold, Rod Earle
    Abstract:

Despite its original vision of a community of Ex-Convict criminological and criminal justice experts, Convict Criminology has had difficulty with international expansion and has remained largely a North American movement. There are many reasons why this has occurred. This paper reviews the efforts that have been made to internationalize Convict Criminology in Europe and discusses some of the barriers it has faced. It also suggests prospects for moving the field forward in a truly international manner and the problems that this entails.

  • practicing convict criminology lessons learned from british academic activism
    Critical Criminology, 2016
    Co-Authors: Andreas Aresti, Sacha Darke
    Abstract:

Joanne Belknap’s recent ASC presidential address included a critique of Convict Criminology’s activism. A number of concerns were provided, although of particular importance here are, first, Belknap’s concerns regarding the absence of ‘marginalized voices’ in the Convict Criminology network. Second, the issue of defining how non-con academics function as Convict Criminology group members. This paper responds to these criticisms. Specifically, we discuss the question of ‘representation’ in BCC and our attempts to remedy this issue. We also draw attention to the academic activism that British Convict Criminology is conducting in Europe. This includes a detailed discussion of the collaborative research-activist activities that involve non-con as well as ex-con academic network members. We demonstrate how these collaborations explain the vital group membership role that non-con academics assume in the activism of Convict Criminology.
