  • Changes in Social Construction of the unemployed during COVID - 19 crisis
    2021
    Co-Authors: Schlehrová Sára-ráchel
    Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis Changes in Social Construction of the unemployed during COVID- 19 crisis addresses the shift in public opinion about the target population of unemployed which occurred in the first half of 2020. The dominant public opinion of unemployed shifted from being considered as people who are reluctant to work, and thus not wanting to participate on the labour market, into almost half of the public thinking the unemployed do not work due to the lack of luck in finding new working position. Sudden transformation such as this can be caused by the direct effect of media or changes in the policy design. Therefore the thesis is set on mapping changes in the framing of the unemployed by the media but also on the transformation of policy design. The thesis is based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of the most read Czech journals (both Internet and newspaper articles) supported by the public policy theory of Social Construction of target populations (SCTP) introduced by Ingram and Schneider. Thematic analysis and frame analysis are used to describe the changes in the Construction and framing of the unemployed as well as to characterize how the elements of policy design (such as tools, justifications or policy goals) have transformed during the chosen period of 2017 to 2020. • Changes in Social Construction of the unemployed during COVID - 19 crisis
Univerzita Karlova Fakulta sociálních věd, 2021
    Co-Authors: Schlehrová Sára-ráchel
    Abstract:

• the Social Construction of illness key insights and policy implications
Journal of Health and Social Behavior, 2010
Co-Authors: Peter Conrad, Kristin Kay Barker
    Abstract:

The Social Construction of illness is a major research perspective in medical sociology. This article traces the roots of this perspective and presents three overarching Constructionist findings. First, some illnesses are particularly embedded with cultural meaning—which is not directly derived from the nature of the condition—that shapes how society responds to those afflicted and influences the experience of that illness. Second, all illnesses are Socially constructed at the experiential level, based on how individuals come to understand and live with their illness. Third, medical knowledge about illness and disease is not necessarily given by nature but is constructed and developed by claims-makers and interested parties. We address central policy implications of each of these findings and discuss fruitful directions for policy-relevant research in a Social Constructionist tradition. Social Constructionism provides an important counterpoint to medicine’s largely deterministic approaches to disease and ...

  • the Social Construction of retirement and evolving policy discourse of working longer
    Journal of Social Policy, 2016
    Co-Authors: Philip Taylor, Catherine Earl
    Abstract:

This article is concerned with the evolving Social Construction of older workers and retirement. Evolving and competing ‘world-views’ from public policy, and Social advocacy of productive and vulnerable older workers, are described and critiqued. Contradictions and disjunctions, in terms of public policies aimed at changing employer behaviour towards older workers, are identified. It is argued that present representations of older workers have serious flaws that provide a weak basis for policy development and may not only undermine the prospects for overcoming prejudicial societal attitudes but may in fact strengthen them. It is further argued that sheltering older workers in employment placements will inevitably limit the extent and nature of their participation. Instead, the mainstreaming of their employment is justified, bearing in mind negative attitudes towards ageing.

  • expanding understanding of service exchange and value co creation a Social Construction approach
Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, 2011
Co-Authors: Bo Edvardsson, Bard Tronvoll, Thorsten Gruber
    Abstract:

According to service-dominant logic (S-D logic), all providers are service providers, and service is the fundamental basis of exchange. Value is co-created with customers and assessed on the basis of value-in-context. However, the extensive literature on S-D logic could benefit from paying explicit attention to the fact that both service exchange and value co-creation are influenced by Social forces. The aim of this study is to expand understanding of service exchange and value co-creation by complementing these central aspects of S-D logic with key concepts from Social Construction theories (Social structures, Social systems, roles, positions, interactions, and reproduction of Social structures). The study develops and describes a new framework for understanding how the concepts of service exchange and value co-creation are affected by recognizing that they are embedded in Social systems. The study contends that value should be understood as value-in-Social-context and that value is a Social Construction. Value co-creation is shaped by Social forces, is reproduced in Social structures, and can be asymmetric for the actors involved. Service exchanges are dynamic, and actors learn and change their roles within dynamic service systems.
