    : The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of selenium Feed Supplements on the functional properties of eggs. The hens in experimental groups were fed diets supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg selenium from sodium selenite (Group 1), selenium-enriched yeast (Group 2), synthetic L-selenomethionine (Group 3), or hydroxy analog of selenomethionine (Group 4). The Control Group (Group C) was fed with basal Feed without supplementation. The highest values of albumen gel firmness were shown in Group C eggs; differences with all experimental groups were significant (p < 0.001 to p = 0.009). It was ascertained that albumen gel firmness correlated with albumen pH (rs = 0.490; p < 0.001), which was highest in eggs from non-supplemented hens. Group 1 eggs and Group C eggs showed lower albumen foaming capacity (p < 0.001) compared to eggs from other groups. Both albumen foaming capacity and albumen foam stability were higher in Group 2 eggs than in Group C eggs (p < 0.001). The highest yolk foaming capacity was found in Group 2 eggs (p < 0.001). Sponge cakes baked with Group C eggs had a smaller volume than those baked with eggs from Group 2 (p = 0.005), Group 3 (p = 0.004) and Group 4 (p = 0.024). The results of the study confirmed that selenium added to the laying hen Feed significantly affected the monitored functional properties of both albumen and yolk. The most distinctive effect of selenium was shown in eggs from the group supplemented with selenium-enriched yeast, for which the results of albumen foam capacity and stability and yolk foaming capacity were the best.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Falling supply and rising demand of conventional Feed ingredients leads to soaring fishmeal prices, which necessitates the need for alternate Feed sources. This study aims to evaluate the performance of dried dietary Chlorella sp. on the survival and growth of the freshwater juvenile- Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Koi) in a 60-day Feeding trials. Microalgae was cultivated in bubble column photobioreactors with ambient air and flue gas and found to be very promising as carbon-dioxide mitigation agent. The microalgal biomass was included at dosage of 15% (w/w) to formulate two iso-nitrogenous (358 g protein kg−1 diet) and iso-caloric (19.23 MJkg−1) diets as a replacement of fishmeal. The algae derived diets contained essential macronutrients for the nutrition and survival of carp fishes. Performance evaluation of formulated diets vis-a-vis control Feed (CF) showed significant improvement in weight gain (up to 55%), lower Feed conversion ratio (2.17) and protein efficiency ratio (3.3). Cost estimates showed a marked reduction (26.10%) in cost of formulated Feeds compared to conventional commercial Feed that can significantly affect the profit margin of fish farmers. Further, histo-architectural changes in the intestinal sections of fishes confirmed the suitability of algal-based diets. This study highlights an interesting innovative strategy of producing cleaner microalgal biomass after waste carbon dioxide capture for the formulation of alternative nutritional Feed supplement and paves a way for algal farmers to culture microalgae as unconventional Feed source for the aquaculture industry. Lastly, the outcomes of this study are first of its kind in fish Feed research and technology development.

    The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of two commercial Feed Supplements, Egusin 250® [E-250] and Egusin SLH® [E-SLH], on gastric ulcer scores, gastric fluid pH, and blood gas values in stall-confined horses undergoing Feed-deprivation. Nine Thoroughbred horses were used in a three-period crossover study. For the three treatment groups, sweet Feed was mixed with E-250, E-SLH, or nothing (control group) and fed twice daily. Horses were treated for 21 days, then an additional 7 days while on an alternating Feed-deprivation model to induce or worsen ulcers (period one). In periods two and three, horses (n=6) were treated for an additional 7 days after Feed-deprivation. Gastroscopies were performed on day -1 (n=9), day 21 (n=9), day 28 (n=9) and day 35 (n=6). Gastric juice pH was measured and gastric ulcer scores were assigned. Venous blood gas values were also measured. Gastric ulcers in control horses significantly decreased after 21 days, but there was no difference in ulcer scores when compared to the Egusin® treated horses. NG gastric ulcer scores significantly increased in E-250 and control horses on day 28 compared to day 21 as a result of intermittent Feed-deprivation, but no treatment effect was observed. NG ulcer scores remained high in the control group but significantly decreased in the E-SLH- and E-250-treated horses by day 35. Gastric juice pH values were low and variable and no treatment effect was observed. Mean blood pCO2 values were significantly increased two hours after Feeding in treated horses compared to controls, whereas mean blood TCO2 values increased in the 24 hour sample, but did not exceed 38 mmol/l. The Feed-deprivation model increased NG gastric ulcer severity in the horses. However, by day 35, Egusin® treated horses had less severe NG gastric ulcers compared to untreated control horses. After 35 days, Egusin® products tested here ameliorate the severity of gastric ulcers in stall-confined horses after Feed stress.
