  • Admins, Mods, and Benevolent Dictators for Life: The Implicit Feudalism of Online Communities
    2021
    Co-Authors: Nathan Schneider
    Abstract:

This essay considers how social networks train users to interact with each other through certain widespread interface designs. I argue that an “implicit Feudalism” informs the available options for community management on the Internet’s most popular platforms for online communities. This pattern grants user-administrators absolutist reign over their fiefdoms, with competition among them as the primary mechanism for quality control, under rules set by the meta-absolutism of platform companies. Through experience in communities so constituted, users may be learning to trust effective absolutism, even if it is relatively rare, and distrust their own capacity for self-governance. In light of alternative management mechanisms with more democratic features, it becomes all the more clear that implicit Feudalism is not a necessary condition.

    Abstract:

Online platforms train users to interact with each other through certain widespread interface designs. This article argues that an “implicit Feudalism” informs the available options for community management on the dominant platforms for online communities. It is a pattern that grants user-administrators absolutist reign over their fiefdoms, with competition among them as the primary mechanism for quality control, typically under rules set by platform companies. Implicit Feudalism emerged from technical conditions dating to early online networks. In light of alternative management mechanisms with more democratic features, it becomes all the more clear that implicit Feudalism is not a necessary condition.

  • A Discussion on the Non-Feudalism of Pre-Modern Society of China
    Journal of Historical Science, 2010
    Co-Authors: Feng Tian-yu
    Abstract:

The stir that the A Study on Feudalism has made in the academic field shows the different opinions on the time period of "Feudalism" and different theories of social forms.Tanikawa Michio, the representative scholar of Kyoto school of thought and FENG Tian-yu,the author of A Study on Feudalism, started a discussion on this issue, and ended up with similar opinions. They agreed that the general Feudalism which defines the Feudalism period from the Qin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty is a result of Dogmatism, and it cannot be called as "a result of the Marxism historic view".Rather than to base on the Theory of "Five Social-economic Formations" that Stalin stipulated, but to base on the reality of Chinese history is a healthy start to discuss the nature of society of pre-modern society of China;to respect the feudal concept of Marxism and to restore its original appearance is the foremost important condition to treat the Marxism Historical Theory respectfully. It's wrong to say that "general Feudalism" is a part of Marxism when Marx gave great criticism to it.The explanation and utilization of the word "Feudalism" should follow the path of evolution from ancient times to the present and cultural acculturation of the East and the West.We need to show the difference between the non-Feudalism of pre-modern society of China and the Feudalism of Western Europe,pre-modern society of Japan from looking into specific definitions and genuine historical facts.

  • From Slavery to Feudalism in South-Western Europe
    1991
    Co-Authors: Pierre Bonnassie
    Abstract:

This book is first and foremost an extended examination and discussion of the enslavement of men and women by others of their society and in particular of the means and causes of the gradual end of slavery in early medieval Europe between 500 and 1200. Drawing upon a very wide range of primary and archival sources, Professor Bonnassie places fresh findings about subjection, servitude and lordship in relation to the prevailing understanding of social history which has developed since the work of Marc Bloch. The author explains how slavery long persisted in southern France and Spain, as part of a public order that also sheltered free peasants, giving way in the tenth and eleventh centuries to a new regime of harsh lordships that mark the beginnings of Feudalism. He shows that Feudalism in south-western Europe was no less significant than in northern European lands.
