Image and narrative, 2017Co-Authors: Dagmar BrunowAbstract:Archives, just like museums or libraries, are agents which contribute to the creation of our cultural memory. Inextricably linked to the notion of cultural heritage, they highlight some narratives, while sidelining or excluding others. Therefore it is important to critically reflect on the question “whose heritage” (Stuart Hall) is created in the process of archiving. This article looks at the politics of creating access to audiovisual heritage in European Film Archives via online video streaming opportunities. Examining audiovisual Archives as agents in the construction of transnational memories, my research aims to provide new ways of reflecting on diversity practices in archival selection. As case study, this article examines the archival politics of the national Film Archives in Sweden, especially the way archivists are curating the site Filmarkivet.se.

ECHO: a digital library for historical Film Archives

However, limitations in information and communication technologies have so far prevented the average person from taking much advantage of existing resources. Historical documentaries held by national Archives constitute some of the most precious yet least accessible cultural information. The ECHO project has facilitated accessibility to this type of precious information by developing a digital library (DL) service for historical Films belonging to large national audiovisual Archives.

Many contained historical footage. How was this material used, to articulate visions of reconstruction, what happened to the material later on, and how do the Films relate to municipal Film Archives? This question is approached in terms of collective cognitive functions, applied to a media archaeological case study of Rotterdam. In focus are two audiovisual landmarks, from 1950 and 1966, and their historical footage, all with different temporal horizons. This study attempts to position the city Film archive in media history.

On missing data treatment for degraded video and Film Archives: a survey and a new Bayesian approach
IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2004Co-Authors: A.c. KokaramAbstract:Image sequence restoration has been steadily gaining in importance with the increasing prevalence of visual digital media. The demand for content increases the pressure on Archives to automate their restoration activities for preservation of the cultural heritage that they hold. There are many defects that affect archived visual material and one central issue is that of dirt and sparkle, or "blotches". Research in archive restoration has been conducted for more than a decade and this paper places that material in context to highlight the advances made during that time. The paper also presents a new and simpler Bayesian framework that achieves joint processing of noise, missing data, and occlusion.
