Working with governments and partners, the UN World Food Programme is leading a global scale up of investment in school health, and has undertaken a strategic analysis to explore the scale and cost of meeting the needs of the most disadvantaged school age children and adolescents in low and middle-income countries globally. Of the 663 million school children enrolled in school, 328 million live where the current coverage of school meals is inadequate (less than 80%), of these, 251 million live in countries where there are significant nutrition deficits (greater than 20% anaemia and stunting), and of these an estimated 73 million children in 60 countries are also living in extreme poverty (less than USD 1.97 per day). 62.7 million of these children are in Africa, and more than 66% live in low income countries, with a substantial minority in pockets of poverty in middle-income countries. The estimated overall Financial Requirement for school feeding is USD 4.7 billion, increasing to USD 5.8 billion annually if other essential school health interventions are included in the package. The DCP3 (Vol 8) school feeding edition and the global coverage numbers were launched in Tunis, 2018 by the WFP Executive Director, David Beasley. These estimates continue to inform the development of WFP’s global strategy for school feeding.

Vaccine, 2017Co-Authors: Tom Ford, Claire Wenden, Alison Mbekeani, Len Dally, Josephine H Cox, Merribeth Morin, Nicola Winstone, Adrian V S Hill, Jill Gilmour, Katie J EwerAbstract:Ex vivo functional immunoassays such as ELISpot and intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) by flow cytometry are crucial tools in vaccine development both in the identification of novel immunogenic targets and in the immunological assessment of samples from clinical trials. Cryopreservation and subsequent thawing of PBMCs via validated processes has become a mainstay of clinical trials due to processing restrictions inherent in the disparate location and capacity of trial centres, and also in the need to standardize biological assays at central testing facilities. Logistical and Financial Requirement to batch process samples from multiple study timepoints are also key. We used ELISpot and ICS assays to assess antigen-specific immunogenicity in blood samples taken from subjects enrolled in a phase II malaria heterologous prime-boost vaccine trial and showed that the freeze thaw process can result in a 3–5-fold reduction of malaria antigen-specific IFNγ-producing CD3+CD4+ effector populations from PBMC samples taken post vaccination. We have also demonstrated that peptide responsive CD8+ T cells are relatively unaffected, as well as CD4+ T cell populations that do not produce IFNγ. These findings contribute to a growing body of data that could be consolidated and synthesised as guidelines for clinical trials with the aim of increasing the efficiency of vaccine development pipelines.

appraising the state of procurement of mechnical and electrical services on selected public building projects in delta state nigeria

This has been the bane of services procurement in Delta State. Thus, the research appraised the procurement of mechanical and electrical services installations in selected building projects in Delta State, with a view to determining the common procurement methods adopted by clients and identifying the factors affecting the choice of procurement methods. Two selected public institutions and some selected approved private buildings in Uvwie local government area of Delta state formed the study area/projects. The research was carried out through a structured questionnaire on sectional basis in consonance with the objectives of the study. Both purposive sampling was applied on a population of 91 professionals in the study area. Data collected were analyzed with statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 16 via frequencies, percentages and mean score. Results from the analysis showed that design and install followed by traditional method are the procurement methods mostly used by clients for M&E services in the study area while short project duration, quality of end product, and cost effectiveness constitute major reasons why clients use procurement methods. In addition to this, technical complexity of the project, Financial capacity of the client, the Financial Requirement of the project, economic factors and size or magnitude of the project are key factors that influence the choice of procurement method for M&E services, although at varying degrees. It was concluded and subsequently recommended since that design and install method of procurement is mostly adopted by clients for M&E services in building projects and thus should be adopted by clients since they lead shorter project delivery time, better quality of end products and are cost effective.
