    Abstract:

    Abstract Background Postpartum depression and anxiety are prevalent in the First Year after giving birth and can have problematic health outcomes for the mother and infant, although further research is required about the factors that contribute to their development. This study explored the trajectory of depressive and anxiety symptoms across the First Postpartum Year and their associations with body attitudes, body mass index, and weight retention. Methods Participants were 467 women recruited during pregnancy via online forums, in parenting magazines, and at baby and children's markets, or from a large tertiary Australian hospital. Participants reported retrospectively on the prepregnancy period and provided data in early pregnancy (Baseline; M = 17.1 weeks pregnant), at 3 months Postpartum (T1; M = 13.1 weeks after birth), 6 months Postpartum (T2; M = 26.6 weeks after birth), and 12 months Postpartum (T3; M = 52.8 weeks after birth). Results Latent growth curve modelling revealed that, from T1 to T3, depressive symptoms significantly decreased, whereas anxiety symptoms did not change significantly. Demographic factors, weight retention, body mass index, and body attitudes at T1 did not significantly predict the course of depression and anxiety over time; however, greater Postpartum weight retention and negative body attitudes at T1 predicted a more severe experience of both depression and anxiety at T3. Conclusions These findings emphasize the need to assess and monitor the risk factors that can have an adverse impact on Postpartum women's psychological health. This finding is particularly important for women deemed to be at risk of problematic body image or weight issues so that health professionals can intervene, and better ensure the health of new mothers in the longer term.

Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety are common in the Postpartum, as are poor body image and excessive weight retention as women adjust to their post pregnancy body.     ABSTRACT This longitudinal study investigated body image changes and possible predictors of multiple dimensions of body image in the First Year Postpartum. Women (N = 79) who had been followed up since early pregnancy (including reporting retrospectively about pre-pregnancy and concurrently about late pregnancy) completed questionnaires at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months Postpartum that focused on body image measures of feeling fat, attractiveness, salience of shape and weight, and strength and fitness. Women experienced greater body dissatisfaction in the Postpartum in comparison to pre-pregnancy and late pregnancy, with 6 months Postpartum being the time of most body concern. In ratings of perceived current and ideal figure size, women decreased their current size ratings over the Postpartum period; however, ratings of ideal figure remained stable over the three time points.     Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to examine the association of short sleep duration among women in the First Year Postpartum with adiposity and cardio-metabolic status at 3-Years Postpartum. We studied 586 women in Project Viva, a prospective cohort. At 6 months and 1 Year Postpartum, women reported the number of hours they slept in a 24-hour period, from which we calculated a weighted average of daily sleep. We used multivariable regression analyses to predict the independent effects of short sleep duration (≤ 5 h/d v.> 5 h/d) on adiposity, glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and adipokines at 3-Years Postpartum. Women’s mean (SD) hours of daily sleep in the First Year Postpartum was 6.7 (0.97) hours. After adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, education, parity, pre-pregnancy body mass index, and excessive gestational weight gain, we found that Postpartum sleep ≤ 5 h/d was associated with higher Postpartum weight retention (β 1.50 kg; 95% CI: 0.02, 2.86), higher subscapular + triceps skinfold thickness (β 3.94 mm; 95% CI: 1.27, 6.60) and higher waist circumference (β 3.10 cm; 95% CI: 1.25, 4.94) at 3-Years Postpartum. We did not observe associations of short sleep duration with measures of cardio-metabolic status at 3-Years Postpartum. In conclusion, short sleep duration in the First Year Postpartum is associated with higher adiposity at 3-Years Postpartum.

    Abstract A pharmacological challenge of nonhuman primate open field behavior, similar to that which previously assessed the cholinergic system (10), was used here to measure potential lead-induced alterations in the dopaminergic system. Monkeys that had been treated with lead during the First Year Postpartum were assessed at 7 Years of age in the open field after acute intramuscular injection of apomorphine (0.0–0.3 mg/kg) or haloperidol (0.0–30 μg/kg). Duration of environmental exploration indicated a possible greater responsivity to 0.2 mg/kg apomorphine in the lead-treated monkeys; however, in all other behaviors, lead-treated monkeys responded to both drugs similarly to controls. Regardless of lead treatment, apomorphine administration decreased duration of inactivity and increased environmental exploration; the latter possibly included an increase in stereotypical behavior that might have been recorded as environmental exploration. Haloperidol had no significant effects on open field behavior over the dose range tested. Open field behavioral alterations previously reported for these monkeys at 4–6 Years of age were no longer strongly exhibited by the lead-treated monkeys in any portion of the current study. Latency to enter the open field was marginally increased in the lead-treated group but levels of environmental exploration were comparable to controls. These results indicate an attenuation of lead-related effects with maturity and/or familiarity with the open field.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Nursery-reared rhesus monkeys were treated with no or moderate levels of lead during the First Year Postpartum. Previously, the lead-treated monkeys exhibited behaviors in the nonhuman primate version of the open field (10) resembling those caused by hippocampal lesions. The current study investigated the mechanism(s) underlying these lead-related effects using a cholinergic agonist (arecoline) and antagonist (scopolamine) as pharmacological probes that were administered prior to open field testing at 5 and 6 Years of age, respectively. Arecoline decreased locomotion and number of sectors entered. Scopolamine decreased defecation frequency. Neither drug interacted with prior lead treatment, indicating limited cholinergic involvement in the expression of these alterations. The lead-treated subjects continued to exhibit alterations as previously reported (10); specifically, a longer latency to enter the open field, increased frequency and duration of environmental exploration and, at 5 Years of age, decreased duration of inactivity in the open field. These effects were seen four and five Years after lead treatment ended and nearly three and four Years after blood lead levels had declined to ≤5 μ g/dL. Although latency to enter and duration of inactivity seem to be approaching control levels, the increased exploration does not.
